Doc 2026-06 Department/Program Merger: Department Of Visual And Performing Arts, University Of Dayton. College Of Arts And Sciences

Senate Documents

This proposal is a proactive realignment, not simply a reaction to external pressures. We must  thoughtfully respond to the evolving university landscape, which includes shifts in student  enrollment, a smaller faculty body, and increased budgetary pressures. This merger presents a  significant opportunity. By combining our strengths, we can create a more integrated and  dynamic faculty and student experience, steward our resources more effectively, and build a  shared, revitalized plan to elevate the visibility and impact of the arts at the University of  Dayton.

We anticipate this merger will create significant operational and financial efficiencies, allowing  us to redirect resources to …

Its stated purpose was to make “students aware of the diversity of intellectual thought and theory represented by the sciences, the humanities and the social sciences. In addition, the general education component offers the students an opportunity to synthesize and evaluate information from various disciplines and thus enhance the study of a specific profession.” In 1991 significant curricular revisions were made to the General Education Program including the introduction of the Humanities Base and Thematic …

Anglophone Cameroon In Search Of Identity: Obstacles And Prospects, Tangie Nsoh Fonchingong May 2025

Anglophone Cameroon In Search Of Identity: Obstacles And Prospects, Tangie Nsoh Fonchingong

Journal of African Policy Studies

The former British Southern Cameroons opted in a UN organised plebiscite in 1961 to unify with La Republique du Cameroun to form a federation of two states that were said to be on a footing of equality. But contrary to declarations and expectations, the federation was not one of equal states. It was instead a veiled preparatory stage for the total assimilation of the Southern Cameroons into the highly centralised La Republique du Cameroun francophone unitary state. Through a number of assimilation stages, the Southern Cameroons has lost its autonomy to La Republique du Cameroun, its people marginalised, institutions destroyed, …

Warlords, Resources And War In Africa: Who Arms, Who Pays And Who Trains?, Rasheed Draman May 2025

Warlords, Resources And War In Africa: Who Arms, Who Pays And Who Trains?, Rasheed Draman

Journal of African Policy Studies

Since the end of the Cold War, the nature of conflict has changed. A disturbing trend that has emerged with that change is warlords/rebel movements, resources, and greed. Today most conflicts are not driven by "loud discourse of grievance" but by the "silent voice of greed." While it is evident that most warlords rely on the resources they capture, they also rely on external governments to finance their war effort. This policy-oriented paper adds to the ongoing policy and academic debate by focusing mainly on the sources of arms, financial resources, and logistics for rebel movements, particularly in Africa. The …

Conduct, Discipline, And Punishment: Representations Of Early Modern Women In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew And Much Ado About Nothing, Madeleine E. Onderak Apr 2025

Conduct, Discipline, And Punishment: Representations Of Early Modern Women In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew And Much Ado About Nothing, Madeleine E. Onderak

Honors Theses

In early modern England (the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries), women’s natures and preferred conduct were frequently discussed in pamphlets, essays, ballads, and conduct manuals. This research project examines how early modern women are represented in William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado About Nothing and the implications of such characterizations. Early modern literature defines virtuous women as good housewives, obedient, patient, chaste, wise, and pious; they should avoid vanity and submit to men. Early modern depictions of the ideal woman were influenced by the virtues emphasized in Christianity and Classical history and mythology. Women were encouraged to …

An Art Misunderstood, Amelia L. Tortorici Apr 2024

An Art Misunderstood, Amelia L. Tortorici

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

In writing this paper, I had to remove myself from my personal perspective of what opera is. As an opera singer, I have an understanding and deep appreciation for what it takes to perform one aria, let alone an entire production. I find the art form gorgeous, which led me to wonder why opera has become so unpopular. I began to delve into why our cultural perception of opera is limited to old men in top hats and monocles through books on the history of opera found in the opera as well as demographic surveys. I interviewed those around me …

The Effect Of Floor Stiffness On Acl And Meniscus Tear And Chondromalacia Susceptibility In Dancers, Kate J. Moreira Apr 2024

The Effect Of Floor Stiffness On Acl And Meniscus Tear And Chondromalacia Susceptibility In Dancers, Kate J. Moreira

Honors Theses

Dance is a physically demanding art form, placing repeated strain on the joints and muscles of the body. Western dance technique emphasizes use of the lower extremity, resulting in a high volume of injury to the hip, knee, and ankle joints. Dance companies attempt to combat injury by installing low- stiffness floors in studios and performance spaces. These floors exert less pressure on dancers’ joints during intense movement sequences. The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of floor stiffness on dancers’ susceptibility to ACL and meniscus injuries and chondromalacia, specifically. Participants were asked about past and present …
