Historical Context of Vocation at UD
This document describes the projects funded by grants of up to $1,000 from 2018 to 2021 to support the design and development of programs, activities, and events inside and beyond the classroom that offer students opportunities to explore, discern, and act on their vocations. Funding came from a NetVUE Vocation across the Academy grant with support from the Council of Independent Colleges and Lilly Endowment.
Vocation may be defined as “Answering a call to discover one’s unique gifts and employ them in service for the common good in ways that are personally satisfying and bring meaning to one’s life” ("The …

Taking Flight: Developing Leaders for the Common Good
The presenters will define collaborative leadership and examine its application on residence hall staffs at Catholic colleges and universities. They will share what collaborative leadership looks like in Fields Hall, an undergraduate female residence hall at the University of Portland. They will share how resident assistants (RAs) are guided to take ownership of their communities and to develop an individual sense of spirituality that they integrate into their RA roles and careers. They will reveal how these ideas link to training from the University’s residence life department that develops RAs’ self-confidence and provides skills in areas like public speaking and …

The Baptismal Spirituality Of St. Louis-Marie De Montfort, Frederick L. Miller
The Baptismal Spirituality Of St. Louis-Marie De Montfort, Frederick L. Miller
Marian Studies
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort (1673–1716) believed that Marian consecration was the perfect renewal of one’s baptismal promises. This article explores the foundations of St. Louis-Marie’s baptismal theology as grounded in the Council of Trent and the French School of spirituality of Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle (1575–1629). In a special way, the article shows how St. Louis-Marie incorporated Marian devotion into his parish missions. For St. Louis-Marie true devotion to Mary is ultimately a baptismal gift that serves communion with the Holy Trinity.

St. Louis De Montfort: Priest Of Jesus Christ And Preacher Of True Devotion To Mary, Frederick L. Miller
St. Louis De Montfort: Priest Of Jesus Christ And Preacher Of True Devotion To Mary, Frederick L. Miller
Marian Studies
In this paper, I shall focus on St. Louis de Montfort, the Priest, and on the Blessed Virgin Mary’s role in his life and preaching. Montfort’s incorporation of Mary into his preaching of the Gospel, in my estimation, is important for all seminarians and priests engaged in active ministry. St. Louis de Montfort is also the special patron of the Legion of Mary, which remains among the largest apostolic movements in the Church. Not only does his teaching provide the specific spirituality for the Legion of Mary, but his zeal as a missionary has molded members of the Legion into …

The Experience Of The Oblate Sisters Of Providence During The Civil War Era, Diane Batts Morrow
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
In this paper, based on a talk delivered during the 2012 Annual Meeting in Miami Gardens, Florida, Dr. Morrow delves into the annals of the Oblate Sisters of Providence and reveals the challenges they faced during the Civil War Era and their strength and ingenuity in finding resourceful solutions to continue in their mission to educate black children and provide much-needed services for slaves and free blacks during this time. Their capacity for commitment and creativity at this time of existential conflict stands as a model even today.

Women With Addictions: Music Therapy Clinical Postures And Interventions, Susan Gardstrom, Maria Carlini, Jessica Josefczyk, Amy Love
Department of Music Faculty Publications
Like men, women have been using alcohol and drugs since ancient times; yet we are just beginning to uncover important information about women's unique trajectory to and through addiction. Straussner and Brown (2002) write, “There is little or no denial left today: Women can be and are addicts at alarming rates” (p. 34). Close to 15% of the members of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) report working with clients who have addictions (AMTA, 2011). It is likely that some of these members work with women who struggle with addictions, and it seems feasible that some would work predominantly or …
