Are Courts Developing A Consistent Standard For Sanctioning Attorneys Who Misuse Genai In Legal Filings?, Natalia Borges
Are Courts Developing A Consistent Standard For Sanctioning Attorneys Who Misuse Genai In Legal Filings?, Natalia Borges
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis examines whether Florida courts are developing an emerging statewide standard governing attorney use of generative artificial intelligence in litigation and whether this trend supports the need for formal statewide codification. This study addresses growing concerns about fabricated citations, unverified legal research, attorney sanctions, and inconsistent disclosure practices as generative artificial intelligence becomes integrated into legal drafting and research. This research reviews the Florida Rules regulating the Florida Bar, ethics guidance on generative AI, Florida procedural certification requirements, disciplinary actions, and administrative orders from Florida judicial circuits that require disclosure and verification of artificial intelligence use in court filings. …
Black Teachers, Labor Consciousness, And The Making Of The Modern Civil Rights Movement In Florida, Marissa M. Bellenger
Black Teachers, Labor Consciousness, And The Making Of The Modern Civil Rights Movement In Florida, Marissa M. Bellenger
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Histories of Black teachers have often portrayed them as passive actors in the labor and civil rights movements of the twentieth century. While recent scholarship has highlighted the agency of Black educators, few studies have examined how their professional networks facilitated both labor activism and civil rights strategies. This thesis examines how Black educators in Florida leveraged the Florida State Teachers Association (FSTA) to challenge the racialized economic, political, and social structures of the South by organizing equal pay campaigns with the support of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). From the late 1930s to the …
"The Very Finest Place On Earth": Governor Leroy Collins And The Promise Of Opportunity, George B. Crawford
"The Very Finest Place On Earth": Governor Leroy Collins And The Promise Of Opportunity, George B. Crawford
Florida Historical Quarterly
LeRoy Collins' tenure as Governor of Florida (1955-1961) has drawn substantial attention from successive generations ofhistorians and journalists. Most studies of his leadership emphasize his efforts to push for a revision of the state's 1885 Constitution, give urban residents an equitable voice in the legislature and, eventually, reject racial subordination. These appraisals also accent his implementation of improvements in the administration of state government. Collins' success in winning the office with votes from city residents and, gradually, Black Floridians presaged a revolution in the exercise of political power in the state. The combined emergence of these constituencies would make possible …
Improving Screening For Intimate Partner Violence Amongst Older Adults, Olivia Bell
Improving Screening For Intimate Partner Violence Amongst Older Adults, Olivia Bell
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This systematic literature review was conducted to gather a better understanding of screening for intimate partner violence (IPV) among older adults. IPV affects millions of people every year. Many screenings are conducted with women of reproductive age in medical settings, not older adults. This study focused on ways to improve screenings for older adults by addressing topics including elder abuse and IPV and the lack of resources/knowledge for IPV survivors who are older adults. This study was a literature review conducted with the University of Central Florida’s PRIMO database to find articles on IPV among older adults over the last …

Access Barriers To Long-Term Healthcare For Female Sexual Assault Survivors, Mary E. Farley
Access Barriers To Long-Term Healthcare For Female Sexual Assault Survivors, Mary E. Farley
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Background: Approximately one in five women in the United States experience childhood sexual abuse or rape as an adult. Healthcare providers are often not equipped to address the long-term effects of sexual trauma and its impact on one's health. Research Question: How can healthcare providers lessen service barriers for SA survivors? Method: This qualitative study employed convenience sampling from clinics that offered family medicine, urgent care, gynecology, or obstetrics. Participants included 11 physicians, physician assistants, and nurses. A semi-structured interview guide was used to explore health providers' perspectives and current practice procedures regarding treatment for sexual assault survivors and the …
"Taken In By The 'Man In A White Van' Story": The Digital Activism Efforts Of One Women's Civic Leadership Organization In Human Trafficking Awareness, Alex Rister
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Feminist activism in the digital age leverages technology to raise awareness of, and to mobilize support for, important issues and causes. Human trafficking is one such cause, and preventing it is included as a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls. This study sought to understand the digital activism strategies of one women's civic leadership organization, the Junior League, for human trafficking awareness. In addition, this project analyzed how those digital activism strategies did or did not align with social justice approaches to human trafficking and how those digital activism strategies did or …
The Twinning Of Crisis: Intimate Partner Violence, State-Level Policy, And Female-Headed Family Poverty Across The United States, Julio Montanez
The Twinning Of Crisis: Intimate Partner Violence, State-Level Policy, And Female-Headed Family Poverty Across The United States, Julio Montanez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Intimate partner violence (IPV) and poverty plague populations as twin social crises. Just as IPV has implications in terms of gender, race, magnitude, and deleteriousness—so does poverty. IPV cuts across demography but has concentrated burden for certain groups. In addition to the many dimensions of violence survivors may face, survivors may face economic abuse, as well as difficulty working or attaining an education. Poverty, measured in relative and absolute terms, is stratified by various demographic categories (e.g., disability, ethnicity, gender), with certain groups facing an enhanced prevalence of the issue. With these demographic disparities working in the background of the …
Limited Court Access V. Poor And Indigent, Chinyere Anunobi
Limited Court Access V. Poor And Indigent, Chinyere Anunobi
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In criminal cases, poor individuals must qualify as legally indigent to receive legal representation. In civil cases, poor and indigent individuals must find their own resources to support themselves since the government does not guarantee counsel. Without counsel, poor and indigent individuals are forced to find legal representation for these cases on their own, which can be difficult considering the expenses of fees and fines. Cognitive processes, including bias and stereotypes, create a barrier in advocacy because they cloud judgement of decision-makers, which can diminish the voice of this vulnerable community. Barriers like these create an invisible wall where limited …

German Tourists In Florida: A Two-Century Record, Earl R. Beck
German Tourists In Florida: A Two-Century Record, Earl R. Beck
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1981, 74,219 West German tourists landed in the airport in Miami. This figure, which represents over a ten per cent increase over 1980, does not take account of many Germans who came to Florida after landing elsewhere in the United States. Those thousands of Germans who visit Florida today are continuing the lively interest in this state which began more than two hundred years ago. But, strangely enough, the number of German accounts of Florida and its myriad lures has been quite small. Stranger still, while tourism has grown, German writing about Florida has declined, and some recent accounts …
Mary Grace Quackenbos, A Visitor Florida Did Not Want, Jerrell H. Shofner
Mary Grace Quackenbos, A Visitor Florida Did Not Want, Jerrell H. Shofner
Florida Historical Quarterly
By the early twentieth century the Florida turpentine industry was at its zenith. Hundreds of thousands of pines were boxed for turpentine, and thousands of men in scores of isolated camps tended the trees for their employers. The operators of the camps in turn sold their products to naval stores marketing firms in Jacksonville, Savannah, or Tampa. These large factors then disposed of the turpentine and resin according to price quotations usually established by the Savannah market and followed by those of other cities. It was big business and heavily influenced by the harshest competitive practices of the day. Fierce …
Trail Indians Of Florida, James W. Covington
Trail Indians Of Florida, James W. Covington
Florida Historical Quarterly
The story of the Trail Indians of Florida is the account of Seminoles who loved Florida as much as any group that ever lived here-Latins, crackers, or transplanted Yankees-and who fought the United States government to a virtual standstill in three nineteenth-century wars in a fierce determination to maintain their homes somewhere on the peninsula. In terms of religion, education, and their general life pattern, the Trail Indians have been among the most recalcitrant in the United States against the threats of the white man’s civilization. In recent years one group of Seminoles, organized into the Miccosukee Tribe, launched a …

The Mediating Role Of Leader-Member Exchange: Leader Personality And Information Sharing, Hillary Chandler
The Mediating Role Of Leader-Member Exchange: Leader Personality And Information Sharing, Hillary Chandler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This study investigated the mechanisms that facilitate information sharing, specifically, how leader personality may affect leader-employee relationship quality and employee information sharing behavior. Those who share information with their leaders and coworkers contribute more to their team and improve performance on an individual, team, and organizational level (Wang & Noe, 2010). This research examines the relationships between leader personality, employee perceived leader-member exchange quality, and employee information sharing. Responses (n = 81) from undergraduate students who work at least 20 hours a week were used in study analyses. Surveys used to collect data for this study covered employee perception of …
The Effect Of Economic Conditions On The Prevalence Of Abusive Supervisory Behaviors: A Cross-Temporal Meta-Analysis, Xinyue Zhao
The Effect Of Economic Conditions On The Prevalence Of Abusive Supervisory Behaviors: A Cross-Temporal Meta-Analysis, Xinyue Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The antecedents of abusive supervisory behaviors have been largely examined at the individual and organizational level. Hardly any attempts have been made to investigate abusive supervisory behaviors in a context broader than the organization. I try to answer the question "does a recession really unleash abusive supervisory behaviors?" by conducting a cross-temporal meta-analysis to examine the effect of economic conditions on the prevalence of abusive supervisory behaviors. Considering economic conditions as an antecedent to abusive supervisory behaviors provides a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomena. I proposed four reasons to explain how economic conditions affect employee's perception of abusive supervisory …

Secondary Victimization Of Young Adult Female Sexual Assault Victims, Kristin M. Hunter
Secondary Victimization Of Young Adult Female Sexual Assault Victims, Kristin M. Hunter
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The response of community members and public institutions to the crimes of rape and sexual assault have been, historically, disappointing. Victims have felt forced into silence, ashamed to speak out about their experiences. More recently, with the rise of social media use and the #me-too movement, attention and interest has been garnered for this unique class of crimes and victims. It has been discovered that victims of sexual assault who report their assault to community members, police investigators, and health care workers are at risk of secondary victimization. This is a series of attitudes, behaviors, and practices that retraumatizes, shames, …

Post-Judgment Recovery And Its Effectuation On The Contemporary Debtors' Prison: A Treble Analysis On Collections Law In The State Of Florida, Andrew E. Weiner
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This dissertation will tender a rigorous analysis on the conjunction of the judgment creditors' inherent right for satisfaction of their outstanding monetary judgments and the respective detriments that the judgment debtor confronts as the party subject to satisfying the outstanding award levied against them. To establish the theory that the civil justice system has "resuscitated" the antebellum debtors' prison and infringed upon principles of civil liberties, this dissertation will expound on evidence garnered throughout this study in a three-pronged analysis of economics, history, and a reflection on the American legal systems, enumerated herein. Evidence will be brought from a variety …
Anti-Lgbt Backlash And The Shifting Public Opinion On Lgbt Rights In Contemporary Russia: A Case Study, Sean T. Skillings
Anti-Lgbt Backlash And The Shifting Public Opinion On Lgbt Rights In Contemporary Russia: A Case Study, Sean T. Skillings
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The wealth of literature which intends to explain various aspects of LGBT rights, politics, and activism in Eastern Europe has been well established (Swimelar, 2017, p. 912). There are currently two opposing theories on the effect of backlash on LGBT attitudes and activism. One theory, purported by O'Dwyer, suggests that backlash is beneficial to the visibility of LGBT issues and for attracting international attention and support. Rosenberg argues that right-wing backlash is detrimental to attitudes and activism (Rosenberg 2008, p. 344-347). These two arguments for and against the "benefits to backlash" approach are clearly defined and testable. With this paper, …
Government Respect For Human Rights And Their Relation To Shadow Economic Activity, Christopher Gahagan
Government Respect For Human Rights And Their Relation To Shadow Economic Activity, Christopher Gahagan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Shadow economic activity can have detrimental effects on many aspects of a society including trust in government policies, quality of public institutions, government revenues, and economic growth. Empirical studies have generally employed a rational actor approach and focused on economic factors. Most studies in this literature claim that when individuals do not receive the right economic stimuli from the government, it damages the relationship between individuals and the state and citizens opt to move into the shadow economy. A small but growing body of research, however, suggests that certain political factors can also lead to shadow economic activity because of …
