Celebrating Medicrity At The Bowls, Richard C. Crepeau
Celebrating Medicrity At The Bowls, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Well, you could have bowled me over with a feather, or perhaps a dot com, when I learned today that four bowl games had already been played. Not exactly stellar match- ups, but bowl games nonetheless. And say what you will; a bowl game is still a bowl game.

Over the past several days much has been written about the graduation of Shaquille O'Neal from Louisiana State University. Indeed the event has been the butt of many jokes, one of which Shaq generated himself when he told people he was working on his degree at Learn Slow University. He now says that LSU means Love Shaq University.

Money And Baseball: The Salaries Keep Rising, Richard C. Crepeau

It was the late Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen of Illinois who once said, "a billion here, a billion there, pretty soon were talking about real money." This quaint observation came to mind over the past few days in baseball as it was "a few million here, a few million there." One wonders if we are now talking about real money.

The Significance Of The Kicker In American And European Football, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
One of the primary objectives in sport is to win. In American sport winning is too often the only thing. Coaches spend sixteen to eighteen-hour days in seven-day weeks searching for all those little keys to victory that are necessary to success. Owners too spend time, energy and especially dollars in the great quest for the glory that comes with winning.

This past week Mike Mussina signed with the New York Yankees for $88.5M over six-year period with $12M of that a signing bonus to be spread over the contract at $2M per year. Next year Mussina will make $10M pitching for the Yankees. Considered by many to be one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, Mussina gives the Yankees a formidable starting rotation, and this has already led some to concede next year's World Championship to them. This might be a bit premature for early December but it is difficult to deny that they are the clear early …

It might have been just one more of the endless stream of National Hockey League games that attract little attention before January. It was a 3-2 final with Federov scoring the winner with 28 seconds left on the clock. This one, however, was special as it marked a milestone for one of the greatest professional coaches of any sport in any time. Scotty Bowman, currently the coach of the Detroit Red Wings, was behind the bench in his 2,000th NHL game on Friday night as Detroit beat Vancouver.

(As with all American traditions if it happened once or twice it is one, and therefore I present my traditional Thanksgiving piece) The History of Thanksgiving and of Football both go back into the Middle Ages, and so it may not be so strange that the two would become intertwined in modern America.

Now that the state of Florida has released its incompetence and corruption from behind the facade of palm trees and beautiful beaches the true story behind the voting at the BCS can be told. The same people who control the voting in Palm Beach County, and indeed those who exercise the imprecise art of counting in Florida, are the same people who control the mysterious BCS voting on college football.

Evaluating The Impacts Of Uncontrolled Air Flow And Hvac Performance Problems On Florida's Commercial And Institutional Buildings - Final Report, Florida Solar Energy Center, James Cummings
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Twenty commercial and institutional buildings located in central Florida were tested for uncontrolled air flow and cooling system problems. Tested buildings were selected based on three criteria; 1) buildings with large exhaust fans, 2) buildings with leaky ceilings, and 3) education buildings. They ranged in size from a 650 square foot portable classroom to a 50,000 square foot elementary school, with an average floor area of 6518 square feet.
Diagnostic inspection and testing was performed in each building to identify problems related to uncontrolled air flow or HVAC system or control problems. The tests were performed to characterize or identify …

In some places it's called "privatizing." Here in Florida it is called "outsourcing." Over the past few years a number of campus functions have been "outsourced." The most recent example on our campus is the bookstore, which was outsourced to Barnes and Noble, a company that seemed better equipped than the university to run a bookstore. And probably they are.

As we move toward the inevitability of an all-New York World Series, we are stalked by the prospect of having to listen to the incessant proclamations that New York is the center of the baseball universe, not to mention the regular universe. We will also be subjected to the claims that baseball fans in New York are more a) knowledgeable b) loyal c) intense d) all of the above, than those in other parts of the known baseball universe.

The American historian Bruce Catton once said that people in the scientific and industrial age are governed by a basic rule: What we CAN do, we MUST do. When both the risks and the rewards are high, and because the rewards are more immediate and the risks more distant, this rule governs the uses of science and technology in sport.

The Sydney Games And Cathy Freeman Overshadow The Corruption And Distortion, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The Sydney Olympics, like all those before it, had both its wonderful moments and its controversies. For Sydney undoubtedly the defining moment occurred when Cathy Freeman took the gold medal in the 400-meter race. A nation stopped and gave its undivided attention as one of its citizens of aboriginal origin ran away from the field. The 110,000 fans in Olympic Stadium cheered wildly, thousands just outside the stadium watching on a large screen television did the same, and in downtown Sydney yet another large vocal crowd screamed in joy at the sight of Freeman's exquisite run. As if to underline …
