In The Spotlight

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

Joseph Boback, MBA, joined Jefferson in 2022 as a clinic operations assistant in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery. Although he initially viewed it as a “gap year” position before pursuing physician assistant (PA) studies, his manager had other ideas.

Recognizing his instincts with people and his potential as a leader, she encouraged him to apply for an open practice-manager position. He agreed, telling himself he’d give it a year or two. Within his first year, Boback had a change of heart.

“I think this is my calling,” he recalls realizing. He pivoted from PA school to Jefferson's MBA program, …

Jefferson Trauma Surgeon And Resident Reflect On Honduras Medical Mission Trip

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

For one week each February, Jefferson trauma surgeon Kris R. Kaulback, MD, trades the operating rooms of suburban Philadelphia for a surgical center in rural Honduras. While there, he performs procedures on patients who have often waited years, sometimes decades, for surgical care they couldn’t otherwise afford or access.

The annual medical mission trip, now in its fourth year, is led by Dr. Kaulback and Nina Kalawadia, MD, Chief of Anesthesiology at Paoli Hospital, and run through One World Surgery. This nonprofit operates a permanent surgical center on the grounds of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, a long-established orphanage on more than …

Science: Targeting The ‘Undruggable’ In Pancreatic And Other Cancers, Charles J. Yeo, Md, Facs

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

Scientific discoveries and advances often come in an unpredictable cadence. Over the course of my 40 years as a surgeon treating patients with pancreatic and related cancers, we have seen overall five-year patient survival rates improve more than six-fold from under 2% to over 13%. This improvement has its genesis in many areas – improved patient selection and surgical results, better imaging, advances in nursing and critical care and new oncologic treatment options. One area that has eluded progress for decades has been targeting the RAS oncogene mutations common in nearly all pancreatic cancers.

Therapeutic targeting of RAS with a …

Jefferson Transplant Institute Enters New Chapter Of Innovation, Growth And National Impact

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

When James V. Guarrera, MD, joined Jefferson last summer as the Nicoletti Family Professor of Transplantation Surgery and executive director of the Jefferson Transplant Institute, he arrived with a clear conviction about what makes a transplant program succeed.

“Transplantation is the epitome of a team sport,” Dr. Guarrera says. “My charge is to take all of the talent and dedication already present at Jefferson and continue building on it clinically and academically, including making this a destination for innovation and training the next generation of transplant surgeons.”

Since his appointment, this philosophy has been translated into measurable momentum across the …

Medical Missions, Ethical Considerations And The Future For Healthcare Delivery In Ophthalmology, Robert Medina, Ba Apr 2024

Medical Missions, Ethical Considerations And The Future For Healthcare Delivery In Ophthalmology, Robert Medina, Ba

inSIGHT

Beginning hundreds of years ago, priests from Europe embarked on ‘medical missions’ with the goals of delivering care to the body, mind, and soul. Hundreds of years later, members of the United States healthcare system set out on humanitarian medical missions to provide medical assistance to communities in developing countries.1 The concept of providing care internationally as a product of global social responsibility has become engrained in the United States healthcare system, and is popular among providers, trainees, and pre-medical students. In 2023, 21.8% (n = 3264) of matriculating medical students reported participating in international volunteer work, while 7.0% …

Bassini Inguinal Hernia Repair: Obsolete Or Still A Viable Surgical Option? A Single Center Cohort Study, Wayne Tse, William Johns, James Maher, Jeannie Rivers, Thomas Miller

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Background: Most inguinal hernias are presently repaired using some type of mesh technique. This mesh can be placed through an inguinal incision or positioned through a laparoscopic approach. Either way, results have been impressive including a low recurrence rate, minimal pain and a rapid return to work and normal activity compared to tissue based approaches. Notwithstanding these results, there is still a subset of patients who, for various reasons, are strongly opposed to having a mesh repair. This study summarizes our 13 year experience with such patients and why the Bassini hernia repair is a viable surgical option in these …

The Evaluation Of Medical Student International Mission Trips: A Rapid Review, Andrew Kamel Jun 2021

The Evaluation Of Medical Student International Mission Trips: A Rapid Review, Andrew Kamel

Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations

Previous reviews of the literature on medical mission trips have noted that there is a dearth of rigorous data collection and evaluation of the efficacy of medical missions to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Medical students are increasingly participating in these trips as global health curriculums become more popular and prevalent, and the literature about these international experiences has not been well-described. This rapid review aims to characterize the evaluation of medical mission trips for medical students to LMICs. This article is a rapid review of the literature using PRIMSA guidelines to search PubMed for studies about the evaluation of …

Global Connections In A Changing World: Romanian And U.S. Nurses Unite, Mary G. Schaal, Molly A. Rose, Ann Doherty, Adriana Vilan

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

This article describes an international, interdisciplinary, university partnership project to collaborate with health professionals in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania, Romania, to improve the health status of Romanian workers. Academic and service-based public health nurses from the United States used the model of community competence in outlining the nursing aspect of the project. This model guided the assessment, objectives, collaborative activities, and the outcome evaluation of the project. The dimensions of the model (e.g., commitment, self-other awareness, articulateness, conflict accommodation, management of relations with larger society, and leadership) were used within the context of the political and social environment of …
