Spiritual Direction For Teacher Wellbeing, Identity And Resilience, Bernadette Miles, Marlene Marburg
Spiritual Direction For Teacher Wellbeing, Identity And Resilience, Bernadette Miles, Marlene Marburg
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
Amid growing teacher dissatisfaction and attrition, this 2022 research project explored the potential benefits of spiritual direction in enhancing teacher well-being, identity, and resilience. The study involved 11 trained spiritual directors providing eight sessions of spiritual direction to 38 teachers from Australian Christian schools. Findings highlight the positive impact of spiritual direction on teachers' vocational clarity, self-awareness, and ability to manage workplace challenges. Participants reported a renewed commitment to their profession, improved emotional resilience, and a deeper connection between their spiritual and professional identities. Many educators also noted that spiritual direction provided a confidential and reflective space to process professional …
Relational Apophaticism And A Contemporary, Ecumenical Practice Of Christian Spiriutal Direction In The Western Church, Ian Raymond Wilson
Relational Apophaticism And A Contemporary, Ecumenical Practice Of Christian Spiriutal Direction In The Western Church, Ian Raymond Wilson
Theses
Defining and nurturing Christian spiritual growth and maturity is challenging. This is especially so in a contemporary environment that might be considered individualistic and self-preoccupied and where the meaning of the term ‘spiritual’ has become increasingly vague. This thesis explores the concept of ‘relational apophaticism’ proposing it as a pathway of spiritual growth and the essence of spiritual maturity. A contemporary, ecumenical ministry of Christian spiritual direction in the Western Church, and perspectives on spiritual growth and maturity evident in St. Gregory of Nyssa’s mystical writings The Life of Moses and Homilies on the Song of Songs are drawn on …
Ways Forward In Religious Education: Reflections Of An Australian Colloquium, David Hall Fms, William Sultmann Am
Ways Forward In Religious Education: Reflections Of An Australian Colloquium, David Hall Fms, William Sultmann Am
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
Within a changed and changing context for Religious Education, scholars and practitioners (n = 57) across Australia gathered to share and discern ways forward in Religious Education (RE) within Catholic schools. A Constant Comparative Analysis process identified five pathways (ways forward) in support of RE (Formation, Pedagogy, Curriculum, Partnerships, and Research). Each pathway was underpinned by foundations in faith, summarised by an integrating principle and advanced through strategic intentions. Faith foundations for Formation were centred in Christ, acknowledged Church tradition and focused on mission as part of one’s faith journey. The arena of Pedagogy was reinforced as dependent on dialogue, …
Have You Gone To Galilee? Spiritual And Religious Formation For Catholic School Educators In Western Australia, Margaret Scharf, Chris Hackett, Shane Lavery
Have You Gone To Galilee? Spiritual And Religious Formation For Catholic School Educators In Western Australia, Margaret Scharf, Chris Hackett, Shane Lavery
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
This paper explores the personal and professional perceptions of twenty-two Catholic school educators in Western Australia who participated in a spiritual and faith formation program called Galilee. The paper initially outlines the background of the program followed by a review of the literature that focuses on five concepts: people are spiritual and religious beings; a desire to belong; the place of prayer; a journey of faith; and spiritual and faith formation. The research methodology is then provided. Specifically, the research was based on qualitative and quantitative data derived from an on-line survey. The results are reported in four sections. The …
Education And Assessment Of Psycho-Existential Symptoms To Prevent Suicidality In Cancer Care, David W. Kissane
Education And Assessment Of Psycho-Existential Symptoms To Prevent Suicidality In Cancer Care, David W. Kissane
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Clinicians acknowledge awkwardness and lack of skills in assessing suicidal symptoms. This requires increased education, screening for psycho-existential symptoms, and the therapeutic targeting of key symptoms. Assessment of hopelessness, pointlessness, low morale, entrapment, anhedonia, loss of control, loss of roles, and the wish to die prove extremely helpful in recognising a suicidal patient. Use of a screening tool for psycho-existential symptoms aids this recognition and empowers referral for treatment. Communication skills training increases each clinician’s skill and provides a strategic sequence to explore symptoms that mediate suicidal thinking. Network analysis research to identify core symptoms suggests that hopelessness, pointlessness, and …
We Make Ourselves Real By Telling The Truth: Merton And Aging, Glenn J. Morrison
We Make Ourselves Real By Telling The Truth: Merton And Aging, Glenn J. Morrison
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
In No Man is an Island, Thomas Merton asserts that, “We make ourselves real by telling the truth”. Where such transcendent truth uncovers the reality of the self, there is something about the “telling” of a narrative that gives life to the psyche in both the body and soul together. When the process of ageing anchors itself in a formative journey of reminiscence and storytelling, it seeks to be grounded in the reality of spirituality, the very desire to become real. Reality then takes on a transcendent perspective in terms of awakening (to the risen Christ’s narrative of truth, love, …
An Authentic Human Being With A 17th C. Flair: Fenelon Spiritual Letters And Existentialism, Megan Levy
An Authentic Human Being With A 17th C. Flair: Fenelon Spiritual Letters And Existentialism, Megan Levy
Theology Conference Papers
This is an invitation for the mind and the heart to cross the threshold into another dimension in time and explore the parallels between Existential Psychotherapy concepts and Fenelon’s Christian Spiritual Letters written 300 years ago. Christianity and Existentialism are “individualistic” approaches focused on self-awareness, self-responsibility, and ownership to facilitate personal change; both ask for commitment, and none of them offer easy ways or painless quests. Christian spiritual letters as a personal growth tool are centred on Jesus, a self-actualizer, who fits every characteristic described by Maslow.
Existential Counselling Condensed In Fenelon's Spiritual Letters, Megan Levy
Existential Counselling Condensed In Fenelon's Spiritual Letters, Megan Levy
Theses
The findings of this research suggest a compatibility between Fenelon’s Spiritual Letters and Existential theories of personal growth. The Psychotherapy and Counselling Codes of Ethics in Australia, America, and England emphasize the importance of personal growth as an essential tool to ensure responsibility and quality in professional practice. Self-knowledge and self-development are consistent with the ethical principles of Fidelity, Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, Justice, and Self-respect. Enriching self to deliver better quality and high ethical service in mental health should be seriously considered for both the trainee and the experienced psychotherapist. The similarities between Fenelon Spiritual Letters and Existential Psychotherapy may …
Pastoral Care And Counselling: Towards A Post-Metaphysical Theology Of Friendship, Glenn J. Morrison
Pastoral Care And Counselling: Towards A Post-Metaphysical Theology Of Friendship, Glenn J. Morrison
Theology Conference Papers
The article sets out to develop an eschatological ethic of friendship to guide pastoral care and counselling towards a liberating practice. It uses post-metaphysical categories and terms from the ethical metaphysics of Emmanuel Levinas to enrich pastoral theology. The aim is to stretch compassion towards the future world of Isa 64: 4 and 1 Cor 2:9 in which we can announce a logos of friendship. By having such a sense of transcendence (an experience of a non-experience), compassion as friendship testifies to the Reign of God and to the very hope of encountering Christ in one another.
