George Howard Crosby was born in Waterville, Maine on September 2, 1911, he attended the Classical High School in Worcester, Massachusetts before attending Clark University and Colby College (Class of 1936). Before being appointed registrar of the University of Maine in 1955, Crosby had served as registrar of the University of Texas, Medical Branch at Galveston.

In 1933, Crosby traveled in Europe on the schooner Bowdoin. Crosby was with the U.S. Army in the Philippines from 1937 to 1940. From 1941 to 1945 he was secretary of the Army and Navy YMCA in Manila. He also spent three years in …

After college at Yale, W. Kent Olson's first charitable work began in 1971 at age 25 when he became the youngest person ever to direct the Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) combined Hut System, Pinkham Notch Camp, Saco River campgrounds. He was publisher and editor-in-chief of many AMC books, maps, magazines (including Appalachia), and published many of his own books and articles. Ken retired in 2006 from a three-decade conservation career that included 20 years as chief executive of three nonprofit corporations: The Nature Conservancy of Connecticut, American Rivers (formerly Amerian Rivers Conservation Council), and Friends of Acadia.

WLBZ radio evolved from the passion of Thompson Guernsey, an amateur radio buff from Dover-Foxcroft who began experimenting with radio at the age of thirteen. As noted in a piece written by Fred Thompson in The History of Broadcasting in Maine: the First Fifty Years, Guernsey, considered by some to be an eccentric genius, began with homemade receivers and transmitters and an amateur license granted in 1921. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1926, Guernsey began operating WLBZ as a commercial broadcast station from Dover-Foxcroft.

The Land and Water Resource Center was established by the Water Resources Research Act of 1964 and was primarily funded by federal funds. Howard Paul Segal was born on July 15, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. Segal first came to the University of Maine in 1986 as an assistant professor of history and also the associate director of the Technology and Society Project in the College of Engineering. In 2020, Segal was awarded emeritus status by the University of Maine.

Kenneth Brownstein graduated with a Ph.D. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He came to the University of Maine in 1965 as a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Brownstein was a prolific author of articles and served as the chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1992 to 1998. Brownstein retired in 2004 with emeritus status. Brownstein died in 2008.

The University of Maine Department of Chemistry offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in chemistry, including a Ph.D. program, the establishment of which is documented in these records. The Department is housed in Aubert Hall which was constructed in 1914 and named in honor of the first University of Maine chemistry professor, Professor Albert Aubert, who came to the University of Maine in 1874, and departed in 1909.

Born in Bangor, Maine on July 21, 1922, Waldo "Mac" McClure Libbey received a baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine and a Master's Degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Libbey returned to UMaine to teach until his retirement in June 1990. Libbey also undertook consulting work in the area of acoustics and noise. Record series include teaching, education, and publication records as well as administrative and consulting records and correspondence.

Founded in 1880, Sewall began offering aerial photography services in the 1940s. The photo archive the company produced captures aerial views of nearly every part of Maine, as well as various locations in New England, Alaska, Canada, and the southern and central U.S. Many regions were photographed multiple times over the course of decades. The collection includes 1 million images.

A small representation of images has been digitized is available to the public through DigitalCommons@UMaine.

Brian S. Robinson was born on February 23, 1953 in Worcester, Massachusetts. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Anthropology, and earned his Masters and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Brown University. Professor Robinson died on October 27, 2016.

Born and raised in Farmington, Maria Glen Holt studied nursing at Cornell University in New York. She worked many years as a public health nurse. Maria married Dr. Alfred Holt and the couple moved to Bath when Dr. Holt transferred his practice there. Maria served two terms as a State Representative and ultimately became an environmental activist, fighting against construction of Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in Wiscasset, Maine. In 2017, Maria co-authored the book, The Death of Maine Yankee: Antinuclear Activists' Adventures, 1969-1996, with Elisabeth King.

Geddes Wilson Simpson received an A.B. in zoology from Bucknell University in 1929 and an A.M. in insect morphology from Cornell University in 1931. In 1935 he completed a Ph.D. in economic entomology at Cornell.

In 1931, Simpson joined the staff of the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Maine. As a research entomologist, he gained national recognition for his work on aphids, especially those affecting potato plants. In 1952, Simpson was named professor of entomology at UMaine. Irwin Bruce Douglass was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1904. A scholar, teacher, researcher and humorist, Douglass became a professor of chemistry at the University of Maine at Orono in 1940 and carried out a number of studies into potato starch and the chemical process (and pollution) involved in the pulp and paper industry processes. He retired in 1972 and moved to Vermont where he died in 1998.

In 1883, the Maine Board of Agriculture called for the establishment of a formal experiment station in Orono. With the support of state funds the Maine Fertilizer Control and Agricultural Experiment Station (later becoming the Maine Agricultural & Forest Experiment Station). Eventually the Station would expand its research into genetics and breeding, entomology, forestry, food, potatoes, blueberries, and dairy. Such studies have been funded by both state and federal agriculture grants.

The University of Maine began offering a pulp and paper in 1912-1913 under Dr. Ralph H. McKee making it the first program in the United States. In 1949, University of Maine pulp and paper alumni and paper company executives met with representatives from UMaine to discuss the need for more and better trained workers in the pulp and paper industry. The result of this meeting was the establishment in 1950 of the University of Maine Pulp & Paper Foundation.

Matthew Edward Highlands was a pioneer in the food processing industry. He was born on June 19, 1905 in Huntington, Indiana, but would relocate to Maine and attend school in Berwick, Maine. Highlands attended the University of Maine and graduated in 1928 with a degree in bacteriology. In 1943, Highlands earned a master's degree in food technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

In 1936, Highlands was appointed an assistant professor in bacteriology and food technology at the University of Maine. Highlands would stay in this position until 1942 when he entered the U.S. Army's World War II efforts …

Pusey and Jones Corporation was a major shipbuilder and industrial equipment manufacturer located in Wilmington, Delaware. Shipbuilding was the primary focus from 1853 until the end of World War II. While manufacturing and fabrication of papermaking machinery was a part of the company from nearly the beginning, after World War II, the company closed the shipyard and converted the shipyard's facilities to manufacture papermaking machinery exclusively. The company closed in 1959.

Records pertain mainly to machinery for the pulp and paper business. Also included are papers related to Penntech, a corporation with which the donor was associated.

Edmund MacMillan "Ned" Sheppard was born in New Rochelle, New York in 1933. He earned his B.S.E.E. in 1956 at the University of Miami, S.M.E.E. in 1958 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. in 1962 at Purdue University. He taught at M.I.T. and Purdue before becoming a professor at the University of Maine teaching electrical engineering in 1962. While at the UMaine Sheppard served as the faculty representative to the University of Maine Board of Trustees. Sheppard retired from UMaine in 1997 and died in 2016 at the age of 82.
