Freemont graduated from the Maine State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts (now the University of Maine) as a member of the Class of 1885 and earned a Doctor of Veterinary Science at John Hopkins University. He served as professor of Bacteriology & Veterinary Science at the University of Maine from 1889-1932. The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. After the end of World War I, funds were raised to erect the Memorial Gymnasium and Armory and after World War II, those who had died were honored in a volume titled "University of Maine, World War II: In Memoriam." Many of the individual schools and units within the college had formerly been in the College of Natural Resources, Forestry and Agriculture which itself was established in 1993 following the merger of the College of Forest Resources and College of Applied Sciences and Agriculture. He received an M.Ed. in 1956 and an M.A. in history and government in 1958 from the University of Maine. He received a Ph.D. in history in 1965 from Cornell University. He taught five years at Hobart and William Smith College, Geneva, N.Y., then returned to teach at the University of Maine. In 1965 he joined the University of Maine history faculty. James Norris Hart was dean emeritus of the University of Maine and professor emeritus of mathematics and astronomy. He was born in Willimantic, Maine, in 1861 and died in 1959. He received a B.C.E. degree from the Maine State College in 1885 and a C.E. in 1890. In 1897 he earned a M.S. degree from the University of Chicago.

Hart was an instructor in mathematics at the University of Maine starting in 1887 and dean of the University in 1903. Hart was awarded for his service to the University of Maine with a degree of doctor of science in 1908. …

The University of Maine's Peace and Reconciliation Studies (formerly known as Peace Studies) was established in the 1987/1988 academic year, with an interdisciplinary, global perspective with the goal to infuse concerns for peace into the campus community and beyond. The program is currently a part of the College of Education and Human Development having formerly been in the Division of Lifelong Learning. The program provided training in conflict resolution, campus mediation, maintained a lending library, and organized Peace Week events and special events on campus.

The University of Maine Honors Program began in 1935 and transitioned into the Honors College in 2002. In 2002, the Honors College relocated from the original Robert Thomson Honors Center, constructed in 1975, to the newly renovated Center on the first floor of Colvin Hall. The Center had been named in honor of Robert B. Thomson in 1983. Thomson was the director of the Honors Program from 1962-1977. Howard Paul Segal was born on July 15, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. Segal first came to the University of Maine in 1986 as an assistant professor of history and also the associate director of the Technology and Society Project in the College of Engineering. In 2020, Segal was awarded emeritus status by the University of Maine.

Born in Bangor, Maine on July 21, 1922, Waldo "Mac" McClure Libbey received a baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine and a Master's Degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Libbey returned to UMaine to teach until his retirement in June 1990. Libbey also undertook consulting work in the area of acoustics and noise. Record series include teaching, education, and publication records as well as administrative and consulting records and correspondence.

David White Trafford was born in Blaine, Maine, in 1916. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 and received MA and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. He joined University of Maine faculty teaching history and was appointed chair of the University of Maine Study Abroad Program in 1965.

Trafford was affiliated with the Institute of American Studies Abroad, serving as an honorary fellow of the Institute, vice president for admissions and, during the early 1980s, as director of the Institute-Affiliated British Studies Centre in Kent, England. He retired from UMaine in 1979 and died in Florida in 1993. …

Kenneth Brownstein graduated with a Ph.D. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He came to the University of Maine in 1965 as a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Brownstein was a prolific author of articles and served as the chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1992 to 1998. Brownstein retired in 2004 with emeritus status. Brownstein died in 2008.

After the war, Campana earned an MS in Forestry from Yale University in 1974 and a Ph.D. in Forest Pathology in 1952. Degree in 1957 from the University of Massachusetts and came to the University of Maine in 1958 as an assistant professor of microbiology and animal pathology. In 1963, he was appointed full professorship and in 1977 he became Professor of Microbiology and Animal Veterinary Sciences. Professor Gershman research focused on Enteric bacteria such as Salmonella and Escherichia Coli. Geddes Wilson Simpson received an A.B. in zoology from Bucknell University in 1929 and an A.M. in insect morphology from Cornell University in 1931. In 1935 he completed a Ph.D. in economic entomology at Cornell.

In 1931, Simpson joined the staff of the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Maine. As a research entomologist, he gained national recognition for his work on aphids, especially those affecting potato plants. In 1952, Simpson was named professor of entomology at UMaine.
