Tb162: Red Maple And White Pine Litter Quality: Initial Changes With Decomposition, Mairin T. Delaney, Ivan J. Fernandez, Jeffrey A. Simmons, Russel D. Briggs Nov 1996

Tb162: Red Maple And White Pine Litter Quality: Initial Changes With Decomposition, Mairin T. Delaney, Ivan J. Fernandez, Jeffrey A. Simmons, Russel D. Briggs

Technical Bulletins

The specific objectives of this study were (a) to define the organic and inorganic composition of foliar litter from red maple (Acer rubrum L.) and white pine (Pinus strobus L.), and (b) to determine the shifts in the organic and inorganic composition of these two litter types during the initial stages of decomposition. These two species were chosen because of their prominence in the northeastern U.S. and the contrast they afforded in litter quality characteristics which have a strong influence on litter decomposition.

B846: Growing Season Parameter Reconstructions For New England Using Killing Frost Records, 1697-1947, William R. Baron, David C. Smith

Bulletins

In New England, killing frosts in the late spring and early fall mark the limits of the region's growing seasons. Over the years, farmers have tried to anticipate when to plant and when to harvest to safely prevent their crops from experiencing the harmful effects of freezing. As a hedge against failing memory, some farmers kept notes on when killing frosts occurred so that they could more readily calculate in the years to come when to sow and when to reap. Some of these notes have survived and are now preserved in archives and libraries across the region, or remain …

Mr400: Assessing Compliance With Bmps On Harvested Sites In Maine: Final Report, Russel D. Briggs, Alan J. Kimball, Janet Cormier

Miscellaneous Reports

The research was designed to help answer three questions: (1) What are the documented types of impacts on water quality from forestry activities in Maine? (2) Do timber harvesters use the best management practices recommended by the state to control water pollution? (3) Are these practices effective when they are used?

Mr399: Forestry-Related Nonpoint Source Pollution In Maine: A Literature Review, Craig Stafford, Mark Leathers, Russell Briggs

Miscellaneous Reports

A great deal of research effort has been devoted to the topic of erosion and sedimentation from forest lands. This report reviews the literature dealing with the potential sources of forestry-related nonpoint source pollution and impacts on surface water, with particular emphasis on those studies conducted in Maine and in the Northeast. This review is organized along the following topics: sediment, temperature, nitrate, phosphorus, acidity, and herbicides.

Tb161: Forestry Investments And Option Values: Theory And Estimation, Andrew J. Plantinga May 1996

Tb161: Forestry Investments And Option Values: Theory And Estimation, Andrew J. Plantinga

Technical Bulletins

This bulletin considers option values related to a principal problem for forestry investors, the timing of harvests. The purpose is to present a general theory of the rotation problem under uncertainty and irreversibility and provide a methodology for empirically estimating option values. Modifications of the framework for analyzing options values related to other aspects of forestry investments are also discussed.

B843: The Ecology, Economics, And Management Of Potato Cropping Systems: A Report Of The First Four Years Of The Maine Potato Ecosystem Project, A. Randall Alford, Francis A. Drummond, Eric R. Gallandt, Eleanor Groden, David A. Lambert, Matt Liebman, Michele C. Marra, Jeffrey C. Mcburnie, Gregory A. Porter, Bacilio Salas

Bulletins

The bulletin reports on the first four years of the Maine Potato Ecosystem Project, a long-term, multidisciplinary study of alternative crop management strategies. The study site is a 15-acre tract on the northern boundary of the University of Maine's Aroostook Farm in Presque Isle, Maine, divided into 96 main plots that are grouped into four blocks. Each block is an area where soil survey data show similar soil characteristics. Thus, given the same production inputs, the crop output is expected to be the same on each plot within a block. Within each block there are 24 plots to which the …

Tb160: The Horse Flies And Deer Flies Of Maine (Diptera, Tabanidae), L. L. Pechuman, Richard Dearborn

Technical Bulletins

The distribution of Maine Tabanidae is of special interest because of the number of species with more southern ranges which reach their northeastern limit in Maine. A few northern species reach their southern limit in the state. This paper includes all of the species known or likely to be found in Maine with specific localities by county for the more unusual species and for species not found throughout the state.

Mr398: Water Quality Affects Property Prices: A Case Study Of Selected Maine Lakes, Holly J. Michael, Kevin J. Boyle, Roy Bouchard Feb 1996

Mr398: Water Quality Affects Property Prices: A Case Study Of Selected Maine Lakes, Holly J. Michael, Kevin J. Boyle, Roy Bouchard

Miscellaneous Reports

Lake-front property owners are potentially the recipients of the greatest economic gains from improved lake-water quality because the benefits of water quality can be capitalized in the price of lake-front properties. These same lake-front owners may also directly affect lake-water quality through the actions they take on their properties. The objective of this study is to estimate the effect of water clarity on lake-front property prices for selected Maine lakes using a hedonic property-price model. Hedonic models are used to estimate the share of property prices that are attributable to characteristics of the properties. The share of a property’s price …
