The purpose of the research series is to trace the processes of persistency and change in four northern New England towns. Easton, Addison, and Turner, Maine, were studied by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in conjunction with the Maine Cooperative Extension Service in 1948 (Hay et al. 1949). Marketing wild blueberries as a fresh product has become an increasingly viable alternative for Maine wild blueberry producers. This bulletin presents the results of research that identified marketing regions with the greatest profit potential for fresh wild blueberries and whether there are packaging or promotional strategies that are likely to be more successful than others within these regions. The authors analyze retail demand for fresh wild blueberries in Maine, Boston, and New York City, as well as describe the results of a survey of wholesale buyers of fresh blueberries in Boston. The research reported in this bulletin employs the shift-share method by examining the growth patterns (1981-1986) in the economic structure of Maine and New England. The first section briefly describes the shift-share method and its limitations. The second section describes data employed and is followed by an empirical comparison of Maine to other New England states. Next, a detailed analysis of Maine's sub-regions (i.e., counties) is presented, and the bulletin closes with a short summary of the results and policy implications.

The purpose of this report is to determine a statistical estimate of the returns to agricultural research at the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station during the period 1950 through 1986. The approach taken here follows most of the recent literature regarding the estimation of returns to agricultural research, by estimating an econometric production function and deriving an internal rate of return on both research and extension expenditures within the state of Maine. This estimate is derived using ridge regression techniques. The approach taken here differs somewhat from much of the returns to research literature in that it focuses on a single …

The current study was designed to explore a particular set of methodologies for addressing the question of whether plant root growth affects the rate of N mineralization. Specifically, the experimental design involved supplying plants with only organic N as manure and no nitrate. A highly sandy growing medium was used in an attempt to prevent overly wet conditions in the pots. In addition, instead of only comparing planted and unplanted pots, four different planting densities (0, 1, 2, 3 plants per pot ) were used as treatments.

B823: Transporting Fresh Blueberries From Maine To The Boston Market: A Look At The Economic Alternatives, Antonia L. Hoelper, Michele C. Marra

A study was initiated at the University of Maine to investigate various transportation alternatives available to marketers of fresh blueberries and similar fresh-market enterprises to determine economies of size in shipping. Several methods of economic analysis, including partial budgeting and break-even analysis, were used to assess the feasibility of several transportation alternatives. The alternatives analyzed were (1) contract shipping services, while using various percentages of truck capacity, (2) purchase of a truck and large trailer (20,000 Ibs capacity), and (3) purchase of a truck and smaller trailer (10,000 Ibs capacity).

The objective of this study was to compare several commonly used lime requirement tests and soil capacity factors for their ability to predict pH change following wood-ash amendment. The ability to predict pH change is important because it is one of the criteria used to prescribe rates of ash amendment to forest soils.
