B816: An Economic Analysis Of A Maine Dairy Farm Anaerobic Digester, George K. Criner, David F. Silver, F. Richard King, James D. Leiby, Alan Kezis

Bulletins

Anaerobic digestion is a method for decomposing organic matter, producing in the process, biogas, which is mostly methane. This process can be used to eliminate or reduce disagreeable and often environmentally harmful characteristics of wastes. During the autumn of 1984, the University of Maine began operation of an anaerobic digestion unit acquired from Agway, Inc., a large Northeastern agricultural cooperative. This system, installed at the Witter Animal Science Center, decomposes animal manures and ultimately produces electricity and hot water. A by-product of the system is a fertilizer with characteristics superior to fertilizers produced from biological wastes that have not undergone …

Tb122: Comparison Of Alpha- And Beta-Carotene Content Of Supermarket Vs Roadside Stand Produce In Maine, R. J. Bushway, A, Yang, A. M. Yamani

Technical Bulletins

A study was conducted to determine the alpha- and beta-carotene content of supermarket vs roadside stand produce using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The fruits and vegetables were obtained from a major local supermarket chain and three roadside stands in Dixmont, Etna and Charleston, ME. Thirteen vegetables and one fruit were sampled during a ten-week period between July and September of 1985. Significant differences at the 0.05 level were observed between supermarket and roadside stand produce for only Swiss chard and green peppers with roadside stands having higher beta-carotene levels in both instances. Alpha-carotene was shown to be nonsignificant among sources …

B815: A Comparison Of Small Single- And Double-Drum Cable Systems For Prebunching Partial Cuts, Frederick M. Hathaway, Benjamin F. Hoffman

Bulletins

This study evaluated two single-drum and two double-drum winching systems for prebunching small-diameter, tree-length stems from partial cuts. Three farm tractors with Farmi winches and one sled-mounted winch were used. One single-drum system was run by professional woods workers and the others were operated by forestry students. Three different types of chokers were used and a skid cone was used with two systems.

The professional crew used a self-release block at the back of the trailside pile to avoid piling delays while the other systems used a spar tree. All systems were evaluated by time studies. The professional crew was …

Tb120: Alternative Assessment Of Individual Dietary Intake--A Pilot Study, Paula A. Quatromoni, Richard A. Cook

Technical Bulletins

In an initial effort to devise a rapid assessment alternative that would provide a reliable estimate of an individual's usual dietary pattern, a Predicted Food List (estimated, abbreviated food frequency), an Actual Food List (recorded, truncated food frequency), and a Typical Diet Day (foods perceived as commonly consumed in a 24-hour period) were compared with a 75-day food record. Overall, the Predicted Food List appeared to be the best tool for depicting an individual's usual food intake. It was concluded that a shortened list of food items characterizing an individual's normal nutrient intake level may be a useful instrument allowing …

Patterns Of Tree Mortality During An Uncontrolled Spruce Budworm Outbreak In Baxter State Park, 1983, Akira Osawa, Charles J. Spies Iii, John B. Dimond

Technical Bulletins

A forest inventory of Baxter State Park, Maine, was done during the summer and fall of 1983 to study the patterns of mortality in balsam fir and in the red-black spruce complex during an uncontrolled spruce budworm outbreak. The volume of trees that died during the outbreak was estimated at 40% of the original quantity. Fir mortality was consistently greater than that of spruce. The percentage mortality of spruce was always greater in the higher elevation zone than in the lower elevation zone. Percentage mortality of fir and spruce showed inconsistent patterns in relation to the proportion of hardwood species …

Rufus Putnam's Ghost: An Essay On Maine's Public Lands, 1783-1820, Lloyd C. Irland

Maine Bicentennial

On the plans of towns sold in the District of Maine after 1783, the signature of Rufus Putnam, surveyor, frequently appears. Putnam spent weeks in the wild lands locating corners and mapping lots as a field man for the largest land sales operation in Maine's history. In thirty-seven years he and his associates surveyed and sold a land area twice the size of Connecticut. They struggled with practical problems that still confront later generations of foresters: boundary disputes, political pressures, unruly logging contractors, timber estimates, and map making. The work of Rufus Putnam, not only as an individual but as …

Tb119: Selected Relationships For Trace Metals In Maine Low Elevation Spruce-Fir Forest Floors, Ivan J. Fernandez, Miroslaw M. Czapowskyj

Technical Bulletins

Results from the analysis of trace metals in the forest floor from three study areas northern Maine commercial spruce-fir stands showed significant, positive correlations were frequently evident between ash-free concentrations of Individual pairs of trace metals. Only Pb concentrations at one location were found to vary significantly among soil drainage classes. Overall, ash-free trace metal concentrations were less than what has been found at sites receiving high loadings of atmospheric deposition in the Northeast. Few historical data are available to adequately determine if Maine forest floor trace metal concentrations are greater than the natural levels expected in commercial forests, but …
