B789: A Breakeven Analysis Of Two Rural Health Maintenance Organization Models, Steven P. Skinner, Brenda S. Bridges, Stephen D. Reiling, Dennis A. Watkins

Bulletins

This report uses breakeven analysis to assess the financial feasibility of two health maintenance organization (HMO) models which have received considerable support from health-care professionals as potentially viable organizations in rural areas. The two models analyzed, the individual practice association and satellite clinic, represent quite different organizational and financial structures. Enrollment levels required for each HMO model to attain financial viability for specified premium rates are calculated. In addition, the effects of varying key health-care utilization rates on an HMO's financial position are assessed. This information should be of interest to extension agents and others who are working with groups …

Tb108: Chemical And Physical Properties Of The Becket, Colton, Finch, Lyman, Masardis, Naumburg, And Skerry Soil Mapping Units, R. V. Rourke, D. C. Bull

Technical Bulletins

Soil morphology and soil characterization studies were done on seven soil mapping units in Maine. Soil profiles were selected, described and sampled jointly by soil scientists from the Soil Conservation Service, USDA and the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station. Chemical and physical measurements of each soil mapping unit were made in the laboratory. Soil profile description and the laboratory determinations are presented for each sample site.

Tb106: A Transshipment Model Of The Maine Milk Industry, Stuart Mclean, Alan S. Kezis, James Fitzpatrick, Homer B. Metzger

Technical Bulletins

A model was developed that included the cost of assembly, processing, and wholesale distribution of Class I milk within the state of Maine. Solution of the model with parameter values appropriate to current costs associated with these three aspects of the milk market yielded an achievable least cost allocation for performing the assembly, processing, and distribution of milk, adequate to meet demand, throughout the state. It is hoped that the model will prove a powerful planning and diagnostic tool.

Tb105: The Composition Of Equilibrium Soil Solutions From Forest Soil B Horizons, Ivan J. Fernandez, Roland A. Struchtemeyer

Technical Bulletins

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the composition of B horizon equilibrium soil solutions from selected Maine forest soils. The B horizon was chosen for evaluation because it (1) best expressed the weathering processes active in the soil, (2) occupied the greatest volume of the solum, (3) had the most complex chemistry of the major horizons, and (4) provided the major corridor in forested ecosystems for subsurface flow and chemical alteration of ground waters.

Tb104: An Analysis Of Moisture Content Variation In Eastern Spruce And Balsam Fir In Maine, James E. Shottafer, Allen M. Brackley

Technical Bulletins

This study was undertaken as an attempt to develop some estimate of the characteristic moisture content of green eastern spruce (Picea spp.) and balsam fir (Abies balsame a (L. ) Mill.), employing the methods prescribed under the Maine Weights and Measures Law. Certain procedural factors and conditions of growth were also considered, to evaluate their effect on the moisture content of the wood at the time of harvesting or shortly after cutting.

B780: A Cost Analysis Of Pruning Procedures In Lowbush Blueberry Production, Eric J. Hanson, Amr A. Ismail, Homer Metzger

Bulletins

Burning fields with fuel oil is currently the most practical method of pruning blueberries but is costly and destructive to the organic material on the surface of the soil. Fuel oil is a nonrenewable resource that is rapidly increasing in cost and, in the future, may become less readily available for this use. The need to develop alternative means of pruning lowbush bleuberries is evident. This bulletin compares the economics of six pruning procedures on operations of three sizes. The budgets are based on certain assumptions and costs which will change over time. The results will allow blueberry growers to …
