Joanne Palombo, 27, was named head women’s basketball coach at the University of Maine on June 18 by Michael Ploszek, Director of Athletics. Palombo, who is the fourth head coach in the program’s 17-year history, succeeds Trish Roberts, who resigned earlier this year to accept the head coaching position at the University of Michigan.

A native of Brunswick, and the state of Maine’s first Parade Magazine girl’s basketball All-American in 1983, Palombo returns to her home state with high hopes for the future of Black Bear women’s basketball.

After two seasons of being a contender. the Black Bears are primed for the final step to a North Atlantic Conference Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Maine, with a 17-15, 8-6mark, placed third in the NAC before a senior-laden Drexel squad eliminated the Black Bears in the conference semifinals. The 17-win total is matched by only four other UM teams. An improvement on those accomplishments will take increased maturity from returning players and the insurgence of new faces to make quick impacts.
