An Analysis And Comparison Of The Learning Experiences Of 4th Year Business Students In Tud Blanchardstown Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic., Neil Chambers

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic brought about the closure of schools and third-level institutions across the world, causing teaching and assessment to switch from face-to-face to online. The objective of this research is to analyse and compare the learning experiences of college students before and during the pandemic. It presents a cross-sectional study of fourth-year business-faculty students at Technological University Dublin, using a mixed-method approach that included two focus groups and the distribution of a questionnaire. Findings from the focus groups highlighted students’ perceptions of a lack of interaction with lecturers and with other students, but greater flexibility in online …

Design And Implementation Of A Fully Online And Remote Lab Course Under The Covid-19 Pandemic, Wei Zheng

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

This case study focuses on developing a fully online material testing course while keeping the experiential learning component for the students. The course of interest is a junior level plastics engineering course, PLE-360 (Testing and Analysis of Plastics), during which students are required to utilize various equipment to characterize polymers. Along with online lectures, remote labs are designed and implemented. During these labs, students remotely log into the computers, design the experimental program, conduct the tests, collect and analyze the data. The effectiveness of this practice is assessed through examining students’ lab grades and overall course grades. It is found …

Silence In The Kitchen: How Students Innovated And Created Despite Covid-19., Anna Cruickshank, Pauline Danaher

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

The COVID-19 lockdown has changed the educational landscape forever; everything that we thought we could not do online, it turned out we could. When the Irish Government announced that all third-level educational institutes were to close in March 2020 and that lecturers would move theory-based lectures online, it seemed a daunting challenge. Most lecturing staff had little experience of lecturing with online platforms and no time to prepare the students for new ways of working and attending class. Little did we know that twelve months later, as the crisis raged on, that an even bigger decision had to be grappled …

Empty Squares And Missing Food Festivals: The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Italian Rural Communities: A Reflection, Michele Filippo Fontefrancesco

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

What does an empty square mean for the future of a rural community? This question has been buzzing in my head since spring 2020 when my country, Italy, entered its first lockdown period due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I am an economic anthropologist. Since the mid-2000s my research has focused on the development of local communities in rural areas of Italy. Specifically, I have been investigating the role played by folk food festivals, the so-called sagre, using ethnographic research in north-western Italy, an area often studied by anthropologists to understand the transformations of the relationship between urban and rural centres, …

The Impact Of Coronavirus On Religious Tourism: Is This The End Of Pilgrimage?, Maximiliano E. Korstanje Nov 2020

The Impact Of Coronavirus On Religious Tourism: Is This The End Of Pilgrimage?, Maximiliano E. Korstanje

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The present paper, attends to the theme of COVID-19 and its negative effects on the tourism and pilgrimage industries. To be honest, although conclusive findings on this topic are premature in view of the velocity of facts, no less true seems to be that COVID-19 reaffirms a tendency originally stipulated just after 9/11 and declaration of the War On Terror by Bush’s administration. COVID-19 not only has shocked the world cancelling international flights, closing borders and airspaces, making irreparable damages to tourism and hospitality but it has operated on a much deeper level, developing a culture of fear, where ‘other’ …
