Fish-borne zoonotic diseases have been documented as the causative agents of considerable problems for humans on a global scale. This paper, for the first time, reveals the current zoonotic parasites of fish from wild and cultured hosts in marine, freshwater, and aquarium environments, as well as in native, endemic, and introduced hosts across different geographical areas and seas in Türkiye, based on published data to date. Microorganisms remain a major cause of infectious diseases, emphasizing the need for alternative and complementary antimicrobial strategies. In this context, plant-derived materials have attracted increasing attention for their antimicrobial and protective properties. Chitosan, a biocompatible and cationic biopolymer, has emerged as an effective carrier system for encapsulating such plant-derived components. In this study, chitosan microparticles were prepared through ionic gelation followed by spray drying and loaded with thyme oil and olive leaf extract. Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP-1), a member of the mitochondrial heat shock protein family (HSP90), is essential for protein homeostasis, stress response, and cell cycle. TRAP-1 not only optimizes cellular energy production but also prevents cell death, thereby supporting the survival and proliferation of tumor cells. In addition to cancer, TRAP-1 has been associated with Parkinson’s disease, certain autoimmune disorders, and abnormalities in the kidney and urinary tract. Background/aim: Failures in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) have increased scientific interest in the potential of the bioactive compounds contained in cell-free supernatants (CFSs) obtained from probiotic bacteria for cancer treatment. The aim in this study was to investigate the effects of CFSs obtained from Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (L. bulgaricus) and Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei (L. paracasei) on colorectal cancer cell lines (HT-29 and Caco-2) and a healthy colon epithelial cell line (CCD841 CoN).

Background/aim: Thoracic trauma accounts for approximately 25% of all trauma-related deaths and remains a significant public health challenge. Early identification of high-risk patients is essential for improving clinical outcomes. The present study evaluates the prognostic value of the lactate dehydrogenase-to-albumin ratio (LDAR) in predicting 28-day mortality in patients with thoracic trauma.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of transient bacteremia after coblation-assisted intracapsular partial tonsillectomy (tonsillotomy) in children.

Materials and methods: This prospective study included 42 children with grade 3–4 tonsillar hypertrophy who underwent coblation-assisted tonsillotomy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Aerobic and anaerobic blood cultures were obtained preoperatively and immediately after tonsillotomy. Intraoperative throat cultures were also obtained before mucosal manipulation.

Results: All preoperative blood cultures were negative. Postoperative blood cultures were positive in two patients (4.8%; 95% CI, 0.6%– 16.2%). Streptococcus pyogenes and Actinomyces spp. were isolated. The patient with S. pyogenes bacteremia also …

Background/aim: To evaluate the clinical, demographic, and operational characteristics of patients with infectious diseases transported by helicopter ambulance and to examine differences in the transfer patterns, flight durations, and diagnostic categories.

Materials and methods: Registry data of patients with infectious diseases transported by helicopter ambulance were analyzed. Demographic characteristics, diagnoses, referring and receiving hospital types, intraprovincial and interprovincial transfer status, flight durations, and temporal distribution of transfers (hours, days, and months) were evaluated. Flight duration was calculated in minutes and compared between intraprovincial and interprovincial transfers.

This study investigated the concentrations of essential (Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, and Mo) and toxic (Pb, Cd, As, and Hg) trace elements in complete feeds used for the intensive rearing of cattle, poultry, and pigs in North Macedonia and predicted their transfer into animal-derived foods. A total of 107 feed samples were collected from 40 farms between May 2023 and April 2024 and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Background/aim: Visceral leishmaniasis, primarily caused by Leishmania infantum, remains a major global health challenge due to limitations in current chemotherapeutic options, including toxicity and emerging drug resistance. Host-directed therapeutic approaches are increasingly recognized as promising alternatives. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is an immunomodulatory molecule with host-dependent effects on macrophage function; however, its therapeutic use is hindered by instability and poor solubility. Background/aim: Parenteral feeding is used in critically ill patients when enteral nutrition is inadequate or intolerable, and the gastrointestinal tract is not functioning properly. Lipid emulsions play a major role in parenteral nutrition because they supply necessary fatty acids and a high-calorie density. We investigated the effects of parenteral lipid emulsions on mesenteric perfusion, inflammation-induced oxidation, and organ damage in lipopolysaccharide-induced mice endotoxemia model.

Background/aim: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment is frequently complicated by infections, emergency visits, and therapy interruptions, yet early prediction of short-term clinical deterioration remains challenging. Traditional prognostic markers rely on static laboratory values, whereas dynamic hematologic fluctuations may provide earlier warning signals. This study presents and internally validates a clinically applicable prediction model based on dynamic hematologic parameters and clinician-documented symptoms for predicting short-term (7-day) clinical events in children with ALL.

Background/aim: Osteoporosis is a multifactorial skeletal disease that predominantly affects postmenopausal women and is characterized by reduced bone mass and an increased risk of fractures. The Djurdjura National Park (PND, Algeria) is part of one of the world’s 36 biodiversity hot spots, recognised by the United Nations as a national biosphere  reserve. It contains the Darna primary forest, a key habitat for several mesocarnivore  mammals, including the golden wolf (Canis lupaster), the common genet (Genetta  genetta) and the ichneumon mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon). Although their diets  are primarily based on animal prey, these carnivores exhibit both qualitative and  quantitative reliance on plants, a pattern that merits thorough documentation. Existence Of Positive Periodic Solutions For A First-Order Semilinear Functional Differential Equation With An Iterative Source Term, Ahlème Bouakkaz, Rabah Khemis

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we will establish the existence of positive periodic solutions for a class of first order iterative functional differential equations by using a powerful and effective technique based on the Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem together with some useful properties of a Green's function. The obtained results that complement some previous works, are illustrated with an example.

Background/aim: Limited drug development and increased antibiotic tolerance among Gram-negative bacteria have led researchers to consider combination therapy. Actinomycin derivatives, particularly actinomycin D, exhibit a wide range of bioactivities, including antibacterial effects. However, actinomycin D is less effective against Gram-negative pathogens. Therefore, it is essential to demonstrate the synergy of actinomycin D and its derivatives with clinically known antibiotics against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and investigate the effects on cellular morphology.

Background/aim: CD20 deficiency is an autosomal recessive inborn error of immunity (IEI), and the only known affected individual worldwide has been under follow-up in our clinic. Because the consanguineous parents of the index patient are putative carriers, we hypothesized that additional individuals with reduced CD20 expression might exist within their village population. This study aimed to evaluate clinical features associated with IEI and to identify individuals displaying CD20 mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) patterns consistent with putative carrier status, while also providing appropriate genetic counseling.

In 2021, Türkiye launched a national premarital SMA carrier screening program integrated with in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) services for couples identified as carriers. Human serum albumin (HSA) is a ubiquitous, multifunctional protein responsible for the systemic distribution of both endogenous metabolites and exogenous pharmaceuticals. Its inherent properties, particularly its ability to seep into tissues and its multiple ligand-binding sites, have rendered HSA an attractive vehicle for nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems, particularly for cancer targeting. In this study, we present high-resolution crystallographic data revealing two distinct dimerization patterns of HSA (Protein Data Bank [PDB] ID: 9V61) obtained under high-concentration crystallization conditions, along with results from dipyridamole docking. Background/aim: This study evaluates the challenges associated with overcoming antimicrobial resistance and innovative approaches to combat multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections.

Materials and methods: Novel codoped carbon quantum dots (CCQDs) were synthesized using citric acid as the carbon source and L-cysteine as the nitrogen codoping atom. The formulation in which citric acid was retained was designated as CCQDs-1, whereas the purified version, from which citric acid was removed, was termed CCQDs-2.
