We simulate H-2 adsorbed within zeolite Na-A. We use a block Lanczos procedure to generate the first several (9) rotational eigenstates of the molecule, which is modeled as a rigid, quantum rotor with an anisotropic polarizability and quadrupole moment. The rotor interacts with Na cations and O anions; interaction parameters are chosen semiempirically and the truncation of electrostatic fields is handled with a switching function. A Monte Carlo proceedure is used to sample a set of states based on the canonical distribution. Potential energy surfaces, favorable adsorbtion sites, and distributions of barriers to rotation are analyzed. Separation factors for ortho-parahydrogen …
The Self: Death By Technology, Kenneth J. Gergen
The Self: Death By Technology, Kenneth J. Gergen
Psychology Faculty Works
Kenneth Gergen asks whether in the midst of a techno-cultural revolution the traditional conceptions of self and community continue to secure a morally viable society. Gergen examines the erosion of both individualism and communalism (and their associated institutions) by the accumulating “technologies of sociation,” the host of relatively low-cost technologies that dramatically expand and intensify social connection. He considers the effects of these technologies on the experience of a private self and argues that cumulatively they undermine the presumption of the individual as the locus of moral agency.

A rumor is spreading that Congress will disenfranchise black Americans when it reconsiders the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which it must do by no later than 2007. Growing resistance to reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act is discussed.

The energies and geometries of a series of 2-substituted-1-fluoroethanes were computed at the MP2/6-311++G**(6D)//MP2/6-31+G* level of theory for both the maxima and minima of the rotation about the C-C bond. The results did not support the predictions of a hyperconjugative model, that both 1,2-difluoroethane and 1-chloro-2-fluoroethane would strongly prefer a gauche conformation, and that 1-fluoro-2-silylethane would strongly prefer an anti conformation. The existence of competing electrostatic interactions between the fluorine and the substituents at C-2 was indicated by the detailed geometries of the gauche conformers and by the calculated sensitivity of the gauche-anti energy differences to the presence of a …

In 1995, an aftereffect following treadmill running was described, in which people would inadvertently advance when attempting to run in place on solid ground with their eyes closed. Although originally induced from treadmill running, the running-in-place aftereffect is argued here to result from the absence of sensory information specifying advancement during running. In a series of experiments in which visual information was systematically manipulated, aftereffect strength (AE), measured as the proportional increase (post-test/pre-test) in forward drift while attempting to run in place with eyes closed, was found to be inversely related to the amount of geometrically correct optical flow provided …
Values And The Conduct Of Science: Principles, Hugh Lacey
Values And The Conduct Of Science: Principles, Hugh Lacey
Philosophy Faculty Works
In this paper I will propose six principles governing the proper role of moral and social values in the conduct of scientific uivestigation. I offer them for your consideration, and hope that together we can sharpen their formulatton, explore their implications and test their acceptability. In making my proposals I draw considerably from my recent books, Valores e Atividade Científica (VAC, Lacey 1988) and Is Science Value Free? Values and Scientific Understanding (SVF, Lacey 1999a) The detailed argument, and elaboration of the technical notions that I use are to be found in them (and summarized in Lacey 1999c). The sketch …

Experimental Studies Of Magnetic Reconnection, Michael R. Brown
Experimental Studies Of Magnetic Reconnection, Michael R. Brown
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
Laboratory magnetic reconnection experiments have been performed for nearly 20 years. Elegant experiments by Stenzel and Gekelman [R. L. Stenzel and W. Gekelman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 42, 1055 (1979); W. Gekelman and R. L. Stenzel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 54, 2414 (1985)] focused on the measurement of field quantities with a single movable probe in a highly reproducible plasma. Observations included a very thin current sheet (on the order of c/ωpe), accelerated electrons, and whistler waves. The argon ions were unmagnetized in these experiments. Recent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) experiments by Yamada and Ono have used merging plasmoids [M. Yamada, Y. Ono, A. …
The Decomposition Theorem For Two-Dimensional Shifts Of Finite Type, Aimee S. A. Johnson, K. M. Madden
The Decomposition Theorem For Two-Dimensional Shifts Of Finite Type, Aimee S. A. Johnson, K. M. Madden
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
A one-dimensional shift of finite type can be described as the collection of bi-infinite "walks" along an edge graph. The Decomposition Theorem states that every conjugacy between two shifts of finite type can be broken down into a finite sequence of splittings and amalgamations of their edge graphs. When dealing with two-dimensional shifts of finite type, the appropriate edge graph description is not as clear; we turn to Nasu's notion of a "textile system" for such a description and show that all two-dimensional shifts of finite type can be so described. We then define textile splittings and amalgamations and prove …

We construct four-dimensional symplectic orbifolds admitting Hamiltonian circle actions with isolated fixed points, but not admitting any Hamiltonian action of a two-torus. One example is linear, and one example is compact.

Who's Not Working And Why: Employment, Cognitive Skills, Wages, And The Changing U.S. Labor Market, Frederic L. Pryor, D. L. Schaffer
Economics Faculty Works
Over the Last Quarter-Century, the U.S. labor market has experienced some disturbing trends. Despite apparent economic prosperity, joblessness among less-educated prime-age males is rising and, in addition, an increasing number of university graduates are taking "high-school jobs." Moreover, except for a thin layer of university-educated workers, most in the labor force are experiencing stagnating or falling real wages. Simultaneously, the inequality of wages is increasing within most groups. Using an entirely new approach that takes account of the cognitive skills of U.S. workers and the detailed occupational structure of the labor force, Frederic L. Pryor and David L. Schaffer explore …

Ernest Meissonier: Master In His Genre, Constance Cain Hungerford, J.L. E. Meissonier
Art & Art History Faculty Works
This study documents the career of one of the most widely known French artists of the nineteenth century. The embodiment of mainstream taste, Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier was scorned by the avant-garde, but his jewellike genre paintings were highly regarded by his middle-class audience. Examining his art in detail, Constance Cain Hungerford follows Meissonier from his formation as a wood engraving designer to his virtuous production of small scale genre scenes, his larger battlefield paintings, and his several images of modern revolution and war. Also analyzed are the state administered exhibition system, which Meissonier worked to his advantage, and developments in the …

El Postmodernismo Como Una Forma De Humanismo, Kenneth J. Gergen
El Postmodernismo Como Una Forma De Humanismo, Kenneth J. Gergen
Psychology Faculty Works
The impact of postmodern thougt on traditional humanistic psychology is examined, and the conclusion is reached that the effect of the postmodern argument is to undermine the grounding principles for a moral, human and generative society. However, by revisioning such concepts as agency and experience in terms of the primacy of relationship, postmodernism urges us to create multiple ways of generating integrative conversation, in a way that is congenial with the deepest hoopes of the humanistic tradition.

Is Science Value Free?: Values And Scientific Understanding, Hugh Lacey
Philosophy Faculty Works
Exploring the role of values in scientific inquiry, Hugh Lacey examines the nature and meaning of values, and looks at challenges to the view, posed by postmodernists, feminists, radical ecologists, Third-World advocates and religious fundamentalists, that science is value free. He also focuses on discussions of 'development', especially in Third World countries.
