Fostering School-Home Partnerships: Transforming Learning As A Result Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jennifer Hill, Tracy Reimer

Teacher Development Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the need for schools to strengthen their relationships with families in order to support remote learning. Framed with the theoretical lens of the traditional partnership model, this paper details the results of a survey completed by 56 Minnesota district level technology directors. The survey asked how school districts were responding to the technology needs of students and families while in hybrid and distance learning models. Three main themes emerged from the survey data: maximizing caregiver support to improve student
learning, increasing attendance and engagement in the online learning environment, and building technology savviness in parents and …

How Do College Students Justify Their Deviant Behavior?, Ryleigh Haynes Oct 2020

How Do College Students Justify Their Deviant Behavior?, Ryleigh Haynes

SCSU Journal of Student Scholarship

The goal of my project is to determine how college students justify their deviant behavior. I used a convenient sample of college students for my survey. Students were asked to report on past actions that they have engaged in and explain their reasoning behind why they did it. Previous research indicates that people are more likely to engage in deviant behavior if they can neutralize the guilt from committing the action or if they make it appear normal. The student responses will be compared to nine common neutralization techniques. My presentation will share the results of this study.

Effectiveness Of Higher Education Services For Dreamers, Lesley Nina Sisaket

Culminating Projects in Community Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy

While empirical studies have focused on the struggles and barriers that Dreamers have faced in their pursuit for higher education, there is a lack of research examining how effective services provided by post-secondary institutions are for Dreamers. This study examined the effectiveness of higher education services for Dreamers using a mixed-method design to support the idea that current services provided by Augsburg University are not effective for Dreamers and that there is a need to improve or cater services to accommodate Dreamers attending the institution. The study included a total of 16 self-identified Latinx, undergraduate students who are non-citizens of …

Personal Experiences Of Latin American Students With Limited Or Interrupted Formal Education, Kelli Straley

Culminating Projects in English

The United States and countries around the world are experiencing a growth of students who have recently arrived with limited or no formal education and minimal or no literacy skills, yet are enrolling in secondary level classrooms due to age. Many of the students arrive from Central American countries with difficult social and economic situations, and therefore have minimal literacy in Spanish and little to no exposure to English (Tellez & Walker de Felix, 1993). The term SLIFE, or students with limited or interrupted formal education, defines these students by the quantity of education, but factors such as educational and …
