Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Careers in water are critical for sustainable management of this important resource. However, the water sector is facing workforce challenges like skill gaps, aging professionals, and lack of diversity. The New York State Water Resources Institute (NYSWRI) at Cornell University is hoping to address these issues through interdisciplinary and tiered educational models that integrate academic learning about water resources with real-world applications. This article highlights NYSWRI’s approaches, including K-12 engagement in partnership with state agencies, university-level training through internships and coursework, and professional development via continuing education, with an emphasis on hands-on research, field experiences, and community collaboration. Despite challenges …

Aligning Audience Needs With Scientists’ Information In The Complex Harmful Algal Bloom Outreach To Engagement Continuum, Erica Clites, Heather Triezenberg, Diane Doberneck

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Algae, an important foundation of aquatic ecosystems, can become a nuisance or harmful when it grows in excess. Many government agencies have a role in monitoring, responding to, and confirming a harmful algal bloom (HAB). HAB scientists have important information to share, however, given the complexities of HABs, which often involve decoupled drivers from observed impacts, presents challenges to outreach and engagement. Understanding key audience information needs can help scientists prioritize key science communication and engagement opportunities to maximize the impact of such efforts. Scientists may need additional science communication training or support for scientist-community partnerships. This will be evermore …

Pic-Wrap: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Terms In Online Contracting, Emily Smoot Aug 2024

Pic-Wrap: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Terms In Online Contracting, Emily Smoot

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Modern online contracts—often categorized as click-wrap, scroll-wrap, and browse-wrap agreements—are rarely read by users. Even if users attempt to read them, the use of long paragraphs and complex language creates a barrier for the average user to understand what they are agreeing to. Issues surrounding online contract formation have sparked litigation in recent years to determine the enforceability of these agreements. The current standard used by courts to determine the enforceability of online contact terms is whether the design of the interface would put the reasonably prudent user on inquiry notice of their existence. The standard of adequate notice has …

Fashion, Identity And The Muslim-American Narrative, Shireen Soliman

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

In this pivotal time, assumptions, boundaries, power structures and relationships within society are being reconsidered and reimagined. My research project, “Fashion, Identity and the Muslim- American Narrative” builds off of well-established prior models and responds to this moment. Through this multidisciplinary, multimedia design workshop series geared towards Muslim American female adolescents, we are able to leverage the powerful intersection of design, technology, community, social media and social justice. In this affirming, enlightening space, we use fashion, dress and personal narrative as the springboard and means of exploring the intrinsic connection between social and emotional issues surrounding identity development, social justice …

Challenging The Dominant Representation Of Immigrant Latinas In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Latina Pioneers From The 1950-1970s, Scarlett Rodriguez Jan 2021

Challenging The Dominant Representation Of Immigrant Latinas In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Latina Pioneers From The 1950-1970s, Scarlett Rodriguez

Research Papers

The dominant representations of Latinx immigrants in the U.S. media do a disservice to the humanity of this group and overwhelmingly depict them in negative ways. This paper is an effort to counter these narratives and humanize the experiences of Latina immigrants. Specifically, it explores and analyzes four personal narratives from Latina women who migrated to the United States between 1950-1970s. The methodological approach in this report is qualitative and interpretive analysis, using open and axial coding. The author discusses how identities are constructed and shaped by the experiences of immigration, and connects it to extant research on power, coloniality, …

Using Components Of American Sign Language To Better The Quality Of Life And Communication Access Of Elderly Persons In Assisted Living, Josie Arnett Dec 2019

Using Components Of American Sign Language To Better The Quality Of Life And Communication Access Of Elderly Persons In Assisted Living, Josie Arnett

Honors Theses

One of the most common conditions that affects people as they get older is presbycusis, the gradual loss of hearing (“Age-Related Hearing Loss”). Because of this, components of American Sign Language (ASL) were taught to elderly persons at Stillwater Senior Living assisted living facility in Edwardsville, IL with the purpose of improving access to communication. Helpful words to know in assisted living such as “want, food, hurt, and better” were taught. In addition, students were taught to feel comfortable with gestures such as pointing or thumbs up as a way to communicate. After learning how to sign certain words, students …

Ideographic Identity: A Critical And Rhetorical Analysis Of The Ymca’S Organizational Identity Rhetoric, Katharine E. Miller Dec 2019

Ideographic Identity: A Critical And Rhetorical Analysis Of The Ymca’S Organizational Identity Rhetoric, Katharine E. Miller

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper presents an ideographic, rhetorical analysis of the identity rhetoric presented by the nation’s largest nonprofit organization, the YMCA—an area rather understudied in organizational communication and qualitative research. This analysis explores the rhetorical approaches taken by nonprofit organizations, and the YMCA specifically, in attempting to build and communicate identity to communities in which they belong. Specifically, I analyze the organization’s identity-building rhetoric through the use of both textual and visual ideographs in a variety of artifacts to determine whether or not these strategies are effective.

Art-Based Perceptual Ecology: An Alternative Monitoring Method In The Assessment Of Rainfall And Vegetation In A Ciénaga Community, Lee Ann Woolery Oct 2017

Art-Based Perceptual Ecology: An Alternative Monitoring Method In The Assessment Of Rainfall And Vegetation In A Ciénaga Community, Lee Ann Woolery

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

As an artist, educator, researcher, and scholar, with a focus on divergent ways of knowing, I use art-making as a way to connect with the natural world. In the following article, I explore the making of an image with my hands when practicing Art-Based Perceptual Ecology (ABPE) as a way of extending my understanding and ecological knowing of the natural world, or what will also be referred to as the landscape. ABPE methodologies may offer the means by which humans reconnect to a pre-discursive (mimetic) language, a sentient language our ancestors used to communicate with the animate world. In …

Supervisors’ Experience Of Resistance During Online Group Supervision: A Phenomenological Case Study, James R. Morton Jr. Aug 2017

Supervisors’ Experience Of Resistance During Online Group Supervision: A Phenomenological Case Study, James R. Morton Jr.

Dissertations

Leaders in higher education institutions throughout the United States regard distance learning as an important part of their long-term strategic planning (Allen & Seaman, 2015). Counselor education and supervision training programs are following this trend as demonstrated by the increase of online programs being offered to train professional counselors (Renfro‐Michel, O'Halloran, & Delaney, 2010). Some studies have investigated how online supervision compares to in-person or face-to-face counselor training (e.g., Lenz, Oliver, & Nelson, 2011). However, little is known about counselor educators’ experiences of online group supervision. A phenomenological case study explored the counselor educators’ lived experiences of resistance during online …

In Pursuit Of A Black Identity In Contemporary South Africa: Culture, Class, And Gender In Wedding Reality Tv Shows, Tv Audience Comments, And Wedding Speeches, Lindani Memani May 2017

In Pursuit Of A Black Identity In Contemporary South Africa: Culture, Class, And Gender In Wedding Reality Tv Shows, Tv Audience Comments, And Wedding Speeches, Lindani Memani

Dissertations

This research reveals the opaque social hierarchies which work to structure Black life in contemporary South Africa. Using a multi-modal critical discourse analysis, and four theories: hegemony, neoliberalism, post-feminism and African womanism, this study analyzes the representation of weddings in Our Perfect Wedding and Top Billing Weddings, two South African wedding reality television programs. In addition, the study examines the TV programs’ audience narratives in online spaces. Analyzing online conversations helps to show how audiences actively engage with and interpret messages disseminated by the TV shows as they talk back to the shows and among themselves. The study also examines …

Other-Than-Ego Consciousness: Approaching The “Spiritual” In Secular Art Education, Nico Roenpagel Nov 2015

Other-Than-Ego Consciousness: Approaching The “Spiritual” In Secular Art Education, Nico Roenpagel

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

Alternative worldviews bring forth alternative visions of education. This article sheds light on one contemporary approach to a spiritual worldview and its implications for secular art education. It proposes that high school visual art is a particularly conducive environment to engaging teenagers with existential and spiritual questions. An approach to spirituality grounded in a worldview of “profound interconnectedness” and “other-than-ego consciousness,” rather than religious systems, offers a timely basis for renegotiating the spiritual in secular art education settings. Through five concepts, the article bridges broader discussions on spirituality with concrete learning and teaching in the art classroom. For example, it …

Devalued, Misunderstood, And Marginalized: Why Nontraditional Students’ Experiences Should Be Included In The Diversity Discourse, Cynthia Howard Sims Ed.D., Deborah R. Barnett Ph.D. Nov 2014

Devalued, Misunderstood, And Marginalized: Why Nontraditional Students’ Experiences Should Be Included In The Diversity Discourse, Cynthia Howard Sims Ed.D., Deborah R. Barnett Ph.D.

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Objective: This paper presents a rationale for discussing the marginalization of nontraditional students in the diversity discourse. Background: There is tremendous growth in adult college student enrollment, however marginalization of the nontraditional population is perpetuated through institutional policies and practices. Although there has been improvement in educational access for these students, they are still neglected programmatically and in service provision, similar to underrepresented student populations. This neglect is apparent in the omission of their experiences in scholarly diversity literature. Method: A content analysis of 706 sources was conducted to determine how often and in what ways nontraditional adult student experiences …

Qualitative And Visualization Methodologies For Modeling Social-Ecological Dimensions Of Regional Water Planning On The Rio Chama, Moises Gonzales, Jose A. Rivera, J. Jarrett Garcia, Sam Markwell Mar 2014

Qualitative And Visualization Methodologies For Modeling Social-Ecological Dimensions Of Regional Water Planning On The Rio Chama, Moises Gonzales, Jose A. Rivera, J. Jarrett Garcia, Sam Markwell

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Courses in modeling often employ techniques based on mathematical or other computer-based quantitative models. In this article the authors update a range of social science qualitative and visualization methodologies presented to graduate students at an interdisciplinary modeling course on water issues related to climate change. In part the modeling course featured the coupling of natural and human system dynamics in the context of acequias, gravity flow irrigation systems in New Mexico that depend on winter snowpack for water supply in the form of spring run-off. While student teams were able to employ STELLA and other models, they were free to …

"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting, Jennifer Ann Haegele May 2013

"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting, Jennifer Ann Haegele

Theses

Developments in technology have changed the way we do everything; advanced our research capabilities, enhanced our communication abilities and speeds, even the way people commit crimes. It provides perpetrators with a new way to commit traditional crimes as well as new forms of crime. One of the many opportunities involved with increased communication devices is known as sexting. Adolescent sexting has received national and local attention due to possible long-term implications such as registering as a sex offender and even suicide. Sexting, which is considered an antisocial behavior among adolescents, has progressively become implicated in peer pressure as well. Peer …

The Integral Role Of Organizational Characteristics And Their Impact On Lean Implementation Success, John J. Cooper May 2011

The Integral Role Of Organizational Characteristics And Their Impact On Lean Implementation Success, John J. Cooper

Dissertations

ABSTRACT The increasingly competitive nature of the manufacturing industry has forced manufacturers to examine alternatives to traditional management philosophies. Although lean's success had been proven it was not uncommon for companies that opt to implement lean concepts to meet with mixed results and sometimes even outright failure. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between organizational characteristics and issues associated with lean implementation. The study identified the following organizational characteristics (a) organizational leadership, (b) organizational culture, and (c) organizational change and examined the role each played in lean implementation efforts. The study also looked at sixteen individual …

Negating The Negation: The Practice Of Parkour In Spectacular City, Matthew D. Lamb Jan 2010

Negating The Negation: The Practice Of Parkour In Spectacular City, Matthew D. Lamb

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper interrogates the role of architecture in (re)producing and mediating the spectacular city. I use Debord’s theorizations on the society of the spectacle to forefront the commodifcation of urban architectural space. Finally, I argue that the art of parkour, as a spectacular performance, answers Debord’s call for an analysis of the spectacle within its own language. Parkour, I suggest, offers a reinterpretation of the city’s architectural space by falsifying the false reality of the spectacle and challenging its domination.

Redesigning The St. Louis Journalism Review: A New Media Task In Web And Critique, Diana K. Soliwon

Research Papers

The present project took root when the St. Louis Journalism Review (SJR) agreed to give its rights and publication to the School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The work began before the July 1, 2010 transfer date and as homage to the collaborative nature of web development and journalism, will continue after this degree. At hand was a new media task: with creative freedom, redesign the SJR’s website to fit the parameters of the new management, with considerations for the challenged journalism industry, its principles, workflow, the guidelines of web development and visual communication, and a budget. The …
