Stop The Madness! An Examination Of Mental Health Stigma And Proposal To Implement Widespread Efforts For Its Reduction, Karon Donahue
Research Papers
Many people in the United States are affected by mental health conditions. Mental health stigma is a social problem characterized by negative representation in the media, numerous barriers to obtaining treatment, and feelings of shame for those affected by a mental health disorder. While there is evidence of positive outcomes to some anti-stigma campaigns, there has been a failure for these programs to become widespread, covering all parts of American society. This paper has been created to present recommendations for widespread initiatives at the federal and state level. Recommendations for training and sensitivity programs targeting places of employment and schools, …

Adult Depressive Disorders, Lisa Butler
Adult Depressive Disorders, Lisa Butler
Research Papers
The American Psychiatric Associations' Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (2013) provides diagnostic criteria and characteristics specific to the numerous classifications of adult depressive disorders that many consider broad and complex, having a great deal of subtle differences in symptomology and a significant amount of overlap and consistent co-morbidity with various other mental health disorders. Therefore, the depressive condition tends to be difficult to thoroughly understand and adequately treat in clinical settings. This type of clinical conundrum can lead to misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment and interventions, leaving the client's core problems poorly-addressed and the client vulnerable to an increased …

Law Enforcement Understanding Their Impact And Building A Better Rapport With People With Disabilities (Pwd), Tashara Mccoy

Synthetic Cannabinoids: Characterizing Their Use And Cessation, Richard Vernon Turner
Dissertations
Since their introduction to the United States in 2008, synthetic cannabinoids became the most widely used recreational drug behind marijuana, then regressed to an estimated prevalence of less than 1%. Contrary to expectations for a drug declining in use, emergency department presentations and acute poisonings related to the use of synthetic cannabinoids are increasing. Alongside this phenomenon, a growing body of literature is beginning to uncover a relationship between psychosis and synthetic cannabinoid use. A current gap in the literature exists surrounding harm prevention methods and targeted intervention strategies for users of synthetic cannabinoids. To date, no known studies have …

The Evaluation Of Attitudes Towards Individuals With Mental Illness Among Counselors In Training, Randall Boen
Dissertations
Negative attitudes and stigma associated with mental illness have a profound impact on individuals who experience them. Researchers have defined stigma as the attribution of a deviant characteristic to members of a particular group. Persons with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) face many difficulties that impact their full participation in social life. Although attitudinal reactions to individuals with SPMI have improved considerably over the last few decades, there are still areas for improvement. Limited research has been conducted to evaluate attitudes and stigma associated with individuals with SPMI among human service professionals-in-training (HSPs). For this study HSPs were defined …

The prevalence of people who seek rehabilitative services who have criminal records may require counselors to have more knowledge of the barriers that they frequently encounter. College Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Higher Education, George D. Lowery
Research Papers
Abstract
Although there is a wealth of literature available on children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the scholarship regarding adults with ASD is much thinner. Serving adults with ASD in higher education is an emerging area of research in the study of autism in adulthood. As more people are being diagnosed with higher functioning forms of ASD, it is logical to assume that some adults with ASD will choose to pursue some form of post-secondary education. Despite the increase in students with ASD, very few institutions of higher education offer disability-specific services for students on the autism spectrum. The purpose …
