Physician Assistant/Associate Mentorship In Academic Medical Centers: Is It Necessary? A Literature Review, Allana Lewis
Physician Assistant/Associate Mentorship In Academic Medical Centers: Is It Necessary? A Literature Review, Allana Lewis
SIU Journal of Medical Science Scholarly Works
ABSTRACT
Background: The number of Physician Assistants/Associates (PAs) hired in academic medicine has increased over the years. Academic medical centers provide opportunities for research, clinical practice, and educational advancement. However, the status of professional mentorship opportunities specific to PAs in academic medical settings is unclear. PAs in academic medical settings are exposed to career opportunities beyond clinical practice, including research and academic education. A greater interest in the number of PAs seeking career advancement within academic medicine may arise as the number of PAs obtaining Doctor of Medical Science degrees (DMSc) increases. The purpose of this literature review is to …
The Third Zone Of Incomplete Rights: Spatial Compartmentalization, Expendability, And The Making Of Death Worlds In Adichie's Dream Count, Ebelenna F. Nwaobi
The Third Zone Of Incomplete Rights: Spatial Compartmentalization, Expendability, And The Making Of Death Worlds In Adichie's Dream Count, Ebelenna F. Nwaobi

Contemporary socio-political discourses on global migration often risk misrepresenting migrant experiences by framing them mainly through the language of humanitarianism, inclusion, and identity. While these frameworks foreground protection and belonging, they may inadvertently obscure the institutional and political structures that regulate, differentiate, and expose migrants to uneven forms of precarity. In this paper, therefore, I examine Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Dream Count to explore the migrant condition as one shaped by migrants’ everyday encounters with space, law, labor, and political belonging. By so doing, I argue that the novel reveals migrant vulnerability not just as the consequence of singular acts of …
Ghanaian Men's Experiences With The Police In The United States, Martin Gbadago
Ghanaian Men's Experiences With The Police In The United States, Martin Gbadago
Research Papers
While previous research has examined the police encounters of various immigrant populations and the general U.S. population, the specific experiences of Ghanaian men remain largely unknown. This study explored the police experiences of Ghanaian men in the United States. Using in-depth interviews, conducted via Zoom, with fifteen Ghanaian men, aged 27 to 48, this study investigated their encounters with U.S. police, perceptions of law enforcement, experiences of racial profiling, mistreatment, and violence, and the impact of their immigrant status on their encounters with the police. Analysis of interview data shows that Ghanaian men’s experiences with U.S. police vary based on …

Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms (Habs) Public Health Message Efficacy Evaluation, Alexandra Benitez Gonzalez, Heather A. Triezenberg, Diane Doberneck, Abigail Bennett, Mark Rey
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can present health risks to humans, animals, or ecosystems. Communicating with the public about HABs risks can be challenging because symptoms vary in type and severity across different individuals. However, people with underlying health conditions are often particularly vulnerable to exposure, and they may experience negative health outcomes if they lack awareness of the risks that HABs pose. Literature on risk communication suggests that the way messages are framed influences the impact on risk perception and behavioral intentions. To provide insight into how agencies and practitioners can more effectively communicate health risks from HABs, we designed …

Showing It! Art Matters. But Why? How?, Holly Edwards
Showing It! Art Matters. But Why? How?, Holly Edwards
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This article addresses the agency of art with reference to an exhibition entitled “The Nature of Spirit”. That show appeared in the local public library, resonating strongly with notions of “heartwork”. My first Artizein publication was written in response to 9/11, and this one maintains comparable urgency, seeking solace in art precisely when the world seems to be sliding into lunacy. The prose explores the powers of art in traumatizing times with words, while the images offer the reader insight and support energetically.
Attending The Way Of The Crane: Centring Our Lives Through Creative-Centred Work, Alexandra Fidyk
Attending The Way Of The Crane: Centring Our Lives Through Creative-Centred Work, Alexandra Fidyk
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
A dreamscape using pastiche is used for reflecting upon the value of creative-centred practice and research. Attending to the image through reflection and circumambulation offers entry to a centring practice. In holding both, a new image emerged. The dreamscape—an unexpected scene of cranes in joyous dance—unfolds as actual dream and offers a metaphor for understanding an arc within the dreamer’s life. In this condensed yet nuanced rumination, personal and professional, poetic and haptic, participating and witnessing blur. This practice, the way of the Crane, is timely because it introduces relational pedagogy and testimonial teaching for our times—while touching the pulse …

Factors That Contribute To Unemployment In The School-To-Work Transition, Brittany Verrette
Factors That Contribute To Unemployment In The School-To-Work Transition, Brittany Verrette
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
This paper explores the problem of unemployment for Black or African American high school graduates as well as Latinx graduates. As college increasingly becomes a risk of return on investment, more young adults intend to enter the workforce immediately after high school graduation; however, many Black and Latinx graduates experience difficulty in transitioning from school to work. Using Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, this paper explores the contributing factors that make gainful employment difficult for high school graduates of color.

Transgender Representation In Fictional Media: A Content Analysis, Valerius A. Greenlaw
Transgender Representation In Fictional Media: A Content Analysis, Valerius A. Greenlaw
Honors Theses
Transgender (trans) representation in media continues to be an understudied subject. Most previous studies have focused on analyzing media without including transgender perspectives, making studies with trans participants scarce. In order to determine current perceptions of trans representation in fictional media, this cyber-ethnography collected discussion posts from r/asktransgender on Reddit to determine what trans people perceive as supportive and harmful representations. This study is guided by a novel theoretical integration of transgender theory and labeling theory. Trans theory and labeling theory suggest that the way characters are portrayed may reinforce or subvert current societal norms and impact the way trans …
Autism In Real Life: Performance As Pedagogy And Advocacy, Paula Horton
Autism In Real Life: Performance As Pedagogy And Advocacy, Paula Horton
Honors Theses
This thesis examines how autoethnographic performance can function simultaneously as public pedagogy and disability advocacy through the analysis of Autism in Real Life, a solo performance created and staged at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Drawing from performance studies, psychology, sociology, and disability studies, the project explores how embodied storytelling communicates autistic lived experience to audiences unfamiliar with autism. The performance combines narrative, humor, direct audience address, visual media, and accessibility-centered theatrical design to move beyond clinical representations of autism and toward a relational understanding grounded in neurodiversity and the social model of disability.
Using an autoethnographic performance methodology, this thesis …
Performing (For The) Guru: A Performance Studies Approach To The Study Of Cults, Todd M. Brown
Performing (For The) Guru: A Performance Studies Approach To The Study Of Cults, Todd M. Brown
Dissertations
This project approaches a long-term experience of living in a cult through a performance studies lens. Utilizing autoethnographic methods, it explores personal insights and observations from years within the inner-circle of a coercive religious environment under tyrannical leadership. A variety of systems and relationships are narrated and analyzed according to three categories: ritualization, deployability, and occupation. Ritualization explains how a body becomes imbued with the rhythms and mantras of a cultic milieu. Deployability describes how this body is put into action at the service of the leadership. Occupation, as a metaphor, illuminates how a cultic subject becomes filled with the …

Dissertations
The isolation experienced by college students during the COVID-19 pandemic led to numerous issues and increased stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the coping mechanisms that college students utilized during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the impact of the pandemic on how these students coped and their overall lived experiences. Participants were juniors and seniors graduating between May 2023 and May 2024 from a university in the southern Midwest. The researcher employed a mixed methodology approach, consisting of a quantitative survey, followed by qualitative interviews with students who completed the survey. Based on the results of the …
Transitioning From The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit To The Home Environment: An Occupational Therapy-Led Educational Module Supporting Safe Sleep, Tummy Time, And Feeding After The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Jordan C. Austin
OTD Capstone Projects
Infants admitted into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and their caregivers experience significant stress, which can negatively impact both infant development and caregiver confidence during the transition to the home environment. Despite the established role of occupational therapy (OT) in supporting infant development and caregiver education, OT services are not consistently provided across all levels of the NICU. This gap highlights the need for accessible, caregiver-focused educational resources.
The purpose of this capstone project was to improve caregiver understanding of the role of OT in the NICU setting while supporting a smooth transition to the home environment through the …
Strengthening Fieldwork Mentorship: A Ceu-Based Approach To Supporting Occupational Therapy Educators, Michelle Bryant
Strengthening Fieldwork Mentorship: A Ceu-Based Approach To Supporting Occupational Therapy Educators, Michelle Bryant
OTD Capstone Projects
This project addresses a persistent gap in fieldwork education by developing a mentorship‑focused continuing education unit (CEU) for practitioners serving as fieldwork educators. Inconsistent preparation for mentorship has been identified as a barrier to effective supervision and student growth. Using a program-development approach, the project involved a literature review, expert consultation, and feedback from volunteer practitioners to shape the CEU’s structure, content, and clarity.
This CEU equips both Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants and Occupational Therapists with evidence‑supported strategies to strengthen core mentorship skills, including approachability, communication, adaptability, and therapeutic relationship‑building. Real‑life scenarios, guided reflection, and expert commentary help bridge theory …
