We report a range extension of Atractus boettgeri, a rare snake endemic to Bolivia. This species differs from Atractus taeniatus by a higher segmental count (well outside the range for A. taeniatus) and by having only 6 maxillary teeth as opposed to 8-9 in A. taeniatus. In addition, A. boettgeri differs from A. emmeli in having 6-6 supralabials (versus 7-7) and fewer ventrals (175-177 versus 181-189 in females). All known records of A. boettgeri indicate an association between this species and the Cerrado vegetation of central Bolivia. This report is also unique in that the specimen reported …

Framing Climate Policy Debates: Science, Network, And U.S. Congress, 1976-2007, Hyung Sam Park, Xinsheng Liu, Arnold Vedlitz

Debates on global climate change (GCC) have been heavily influenced by such factors as scientific evidence, media coverage, public concerns, partisan interest, and so forth. Focusing on the linkages among the congressional committees, hearings, and invited witnesses (and their sectors), this study investigates the relational conditions under which congressional committees have mobilized climate expertise to discuss climate change issues for the past decades in U.S. Congress. Our findings show that agenda setting and witness selection by the committees significantly differed across the party lines: more environmental scientists were invited to define GCC as a threat in Democratic Congresses, whereas industrial …

Asado En El Cuero (Barbecue On The Leather), Bruno P. Maestrini
Research Papers
This project is a multimedia website that shows a little about one of the most famous traditions of Uruguay, Argentina and the south of Brazil: their barbecue. The custom of eating this food goes beyond the simple please of tasting good meat. The salting and roasting of the meat on the fire is one of the oldest habits in the southern part of the continent. In this project, the tradition of the countryside and the urban regions are shown in a variety of ways. The project documents the tradition of the people and shows how they survive in a always …

Experimental Analysis Of Separate Functions Of Two Aberrant Licking Topographies In An Adolescent With Traumatic Brain Injury, Jami E. Evans Mrs.
Experimental Analysis Of Separate Functions Of Two Aberrant Licking Topographies In An Adolescent With Traumatic Brain Injury, Jami E. Evans Mrs.
Research Papers
Experimental functional analysis has been successful in identifying environmental factors maintaining challenging behaviors and indicating effective interventions. However, an analysis for multiple topographies of behavior may yield imprecise hypotheses if those topographies are combined within the same contingency within the analysis and aggregated for analysis on a single graph. The current study explored the utility of separate graphing and independent analysis strategies during the assessment for two topographies of licking, “self” and “other.” A series of three analyses were conducted. Contingencies in the first analysis were programmed for both topographies. An analysis of each topography on separate graphs indicated separate …

AN ABSTRACT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER OF
DEVIN MILLER, for the Master of Science degree in NEW MEDIA, presented on November 9, 2010 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
TITLE: Who wants yesterday's papers? The rise of independent online media
MAJOR PROFESSOR: William H. Freivogel
My research project focuses on the current financial and editorial health of the newspaper industry in the United States and the struggles newspapers are having in regards to profitability with their online operations. I have collected background information on independent and non-profit online journalism, the emergence of citizen journalism, and the redistribution of news via blogs …

Bayesian Inference And Computation, Rasanji C. Rathnayake
Bayesian Inference And Computation, Rasanji C. Rathnayake
Research Papers
There has been dramatic growth in the development and application of Bayesian inference in statistics. R provides a wide range of functions for data manipulation, calculation, and graphical displays. Moreover, it includes a well-developed, simple programming language that we can extend by adding new functions. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate Bayesian modeling by computations using the R language. These chapters discuss the use of different types of priors, the use of the posterior distribution to perform different types of inferences, and the predictive distribution. The base package of R provides functions to simulate from all of the …
A Critical Analysis Of The Need For Statewide Networks For Electronic Medical Records, Kimberly A. Christian
A Critical Analysis Of The Need For Statewide Networks For Electronic Medical Records, Kimberly A. Christian
Research Papers
Health care practitioners struggle to meet the demands of increasingly complex patient care, as well as care coordination and reporting. An integrated, electronic system is needed to input, track, store, update and share current and complete patient information in real time.
Recent federal mandates regarding health information technology and use of electronic medical record (EMR) systems are impacting virtually every inpatient and outpatient care facility. Because EMR system startup costs are high, federal incentives for implementation and use are available until 2015, when penalties will start to be imposed if full implementation isn’t complete.
While EMR systems offer a multitude …

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Research Papers
This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author's personal, phenomenological experience of diplopia, double vision, in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Kuppers's notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece re-functions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.
