Two factors have been emphasised as influencing the choice of, and subsequent shifts between, modes of foreign market servicing: (1) market-specific knowledge; and (2) the generalised knowledge from operating internationally. The process-oriented literature on internalisation has tended to emphasise the former over the latter. This article maintains that market-specific knowledge is not the only source of information available to a firm. As firms operate in foreign markets they develop, in addition to networks of institutional arrangements, a knowledge of the process of internationalization. Inclusive Production Of Neutral Pions In Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

A measurement of the inclusive production of π0 mesons in hadronic Z decays is presented and compared to Monte Carlo model predictions. The analysis is based on approximately 2 million hadronic events recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of ⊡s = 91.2 GeV. Neutral pions are reconstructed using photons measured in the electromagnetic calorimeter and photons from conversion pairs. The inclusive π0 momentum spectrum is measured in the range 0.025 x p = p/p beam 0 per hadronic Z is found to be 4.80 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.31(sys). The differential inclusive π0 cross section is …

One of the most pervasive and frustrating of modern transportation problems is urban traffic congestion. Since 1975, Singapore has introduced a relentless series of traditional and experimental measures to slow down the growth of the motor vehicle population and to control its usage. While some of the measures have been somewhat successful, some of the problems were shifted or were substituted. The Area Licensing Scheme led to a shifting of the problem in time and place while the quota system has substituted uncertainty in quantity with uncertainty in price. This paper examines why negotiations following the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) have stalled and makes suggestions on how to circumvent the obstacles. A new measurement of the mean lifetime of the τ lepton is presented. Three different analysis methods are applied to a sample of 90000 τ pairs, collected in 1993 and 1994 with the ALEPH detector at LEP. The average of this measurement and those previously published by ALEPH is ττ = 290.1±1.5±1.1fs.

In this article, the authors propose that individuals' moral beliefs are linked to their implicit theories about the nature (i.e., malleability) of their social-moral reality. Specifically, it was hypothesized that when individuals believe in a fixed reality (entity theory), they tend to hold moral beliefs in which duties within the given system are seen as fundamental. In contrast, when individuals believe in a malleable reality (incremental theory), one that can be shaped by individuals, they hold moral beliefs that focus on moral principles, such as human rights, around which that reality should be organized. Multimedia applications that are required to manipulate large collections of objects are becoming increasingly common. Moreover, the size of multimedia objects, which are already huge, are getting even bigger as the resolution of output devices improve. As a result, many multimedia storage systems are not likely to be able to keep all of their objects disk-resident. Instead, a majority of the less popular objects have to be off-loaded to tertiary storage to keep costs down. This paper examines the impact on the money-output correlation of a univariate specification that allows time series to be characterized as stationary around a broken trend function. Though pretesting suggests that U.S. real output (industrial production) can be described as broken-trend stationary, this result has only limited impact on the money-output correlation. Before 1985 there is a strong Granger causal relationship between money and broken-detrended output (hut not first-differenced output), even when different short-term interest rates are used as regressors. However, after 1985 this relationship weakens significantly, whether or not one determines that output has a unit root.

Searches for scalar top and bottom quarks have been performed with data collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP. The data sample consists of 21.7 pb−1 taken at √ s = 161, 170, and 172 GeV and 5.7 pb−1 taken at √ s = 130 and 136 GeV. No evidence for scalar top quarks or scalar bottom quarks was found in the channels ˜t → cχ, ˜t → bℓν˜, and b˜ → bχ. For the channel ˜t → cχ a limit of 67 GeV/c 2 has been set on the scalar top quark mass, independent of the mixing angle between …

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161, 170 And 172 Gev, Barate, R.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

The reaction e+ e ! HZ is used to search for the Standard Model Higgs boson. The data sample consists of integrated luminosities of 10:9 pb1 , 1:1 pb1 , and 9:5 pb1 collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP during 1996, at centre-of-mass energies of 161, 170 and 172 GeV, respectively. No candidate events were found, in agreement with the expected background of 0.84 events from all Standard Model processes. This search results in a 95% C.L. lower limit on the Higgs boson mass of 69:4 GeV=c2 . When combined with earlier ALEPH searches performed at energies at and …

We report new measurements of the differential and total branching ratios for inclusive B decay to D-0, D+, and D*+ and the first measurement of the same quantities for inclusive B decay to D-*0. Here B is the mixture of B-d and B-u from Y(4S) decay. Furthermore, since more than one charm particle (or antiparticle) of the same kind can be produced in B decay, here ''inclusive B branching ratio'' is used to mean the average number of charm particles and their antiparticles of a certain species: produced in B decay. Search For Sleptons In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Of 161 Gev And 172 Gev, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas

The data recorded by the ALEPH experiment at LEP at centre–of–mass energies of 161 GeV and 172 GeV were analysed to search for sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of leptons. No evidence for the production of these particles was found. The number of candidates observed is consistent with the background expected from four–fermion processes and γγ–interactions. Improved mass limits at 95% C.L. are reported.

Using data collected from 1992 to 1995 with the ALEPH detector at LEP, a measurement of the colour factor ratios CA/CF and TF /CF and the strong coupling constant αs = CFαs(MZ)/(2π) has been performed by fitting theoretical predictions simultaneously to the measured differential two-jet rate and angular distributions in four-jet events. The result is found to be in excellent agreement with QCD, {fx4-1} Fixing CA/CF and TF/CF to the QCD values permits a determination of αs(MZ) and ηf, the number of active flavours. With this measurement the existence of a gluino with mass below 6.3 GeV/c2 is excluded at …

The lecture/tutorial format is the dominant structurethrough which law is taught in Australia. This articleexamines the learning environment of the law tutorial, andsuggests approaches aimed at maximising the learningexperience for students, on the basis of students’ learningpreferences. The discussion utilises Golay’s learningpattern assessment in developing an understanding of thedifferent learning styles of students. Based on thisanalysis, activities are advanced which advocate andimplement joint tutor-student responsibility for learningwithin tutorials. It is argued that students will learn moreeffectively, and expand their learning experiences wheninvolved directly in the structure, format and content ofthe tutorial itself.

Arms control has traditionally dealt with limiting the means of destruction. When the greatest threa to security came from the potential for organized violence inflicted by an external enemy against a state, arms control logically sought to limit that danger. But as the threats to security have become more diffuse, policy-makers will need to draw on a wider repertoire of tools to reduce the potential destructiveness of less organiized threats, and even emerging unintended dangers. In this paper an approach to enhance the learning of abstract computing concepts by novice students is presented. This approach is based on effective use of multiple visual representations, and it was applied within the domain of linear data structures: array, stack, queue and linked list. A prototype computer-based instructional system called MRUDS (Multiple Representation for Understanding Data Structures) was developed and evaluated. It was found from the evaluation that the three presentation modules namely, analogy, representation and algorithm contributed to the students' learning process, each contributing to and reinforcing the effect of the others.

A measurement of the transverse-transverse, CTT, and transverse-normal CTN, τ spin correlations in the decay Z0 → τ+ τ− is presented based on the aplanarity angle of the decay products of both taus. Based on 80 pb−1 of data collected by ALEPH[1] in 1992, 1993 and 1994 on the peak of the Z resonance, the results are: CTT = 1.00 ± 0.14(stat) ± 0.04(syst), CTN =−0.08 ± 0.14(stat) ± 0.02(syst). These values are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions, CTT = 0.989 and CTN = 0.

The branching fraction for D0 → K−π+ is measured with the statistics collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1994. The method is based on the comparison between the rate for the reconstructed D∗+→ D0π+, D0 → K−π+ decay chain and the rate for inclusive soft pion production at low transverse momentum with respect to the nearest jet. The result is B(D0 → K−π+0 = (3.90 ± 0.09 ± 0.12)%

This study reviews the efforts of Singapore to curb road congestion through restraints on motor vehicle ownership as well as user fees. In particular, it traces the history of the famous Area Licensing Scheme (ALS), and then discusses its shortcomings, also the need for Electronic Road Pricing (ERP), its advantages and disadvantages and the technology involved in this state of the art system. This paper identifies important research questions to be addressed in connection with the first full-scale adoption of ERP.

A search for the Bc meson decaying into the channels Jψπ+ and Jψℓ+νℓ (ℓ = e or μ) is performed in a sample of 3.9 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector. This search results in the observation of 0 and 2 candidates in each of these channels, respectively, while 0.44 and 0.81 background events are expected. The following 90% confidence level upper limits are derived:Br(Z→BcXBr(Z→qq̄Br(Bc+→Jψπ+)

A measurement of Rb using ve mutually exclusive hemisphere tags has been performed by ALEPH using the full LEP1 statistics. Three tags are designed to select the decay of the Z0 to b quarks, while the remaining two select Z0 decays to c and light quarks, and are used to measure the tagging eciencies. The result, Rb = 0:2159 0:0009(stat) 0:0011(syst), is in agreement with the electroweak theory prediction of 0:21580:0003.

We introduce a multidatabase model to represent the information that derives from different local databases. This model, known as Tuple-Source (TS) relational model, accommodates tuples from different local databases by attaching them with their source information in the global relations which are also known as TS-relations. In other words, a source attribute is implicit in every TS-relation. To manipulate the global relations, we have developed the TSSQL query language and implemented a distributed query processor to process such queries. The total cross section and the forward-backward asymmetry for the process e+e− → μ+μ−(nγ) are measured in the energy range 20–136 GeV by reconstructing the effective centre-of-mass energy after initial state radiation. The analysis is based on the data recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP between 1990 and 1995, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 143.5 pb−1. Two different approaches are used: in the first one an exclusive selection of events with hard initial state radiation in the energy range 20–88 GeV is directly compared with the Standard Model predictions showing good agreement. ALEPH's published measurement of Rb = Γ(Ζ → bb̄)/Γ(Ζ → hadrons) using a lifetime tag is updated using the full LEP 1 data sample. Considerable effort has been devoted to understanding systematic effects. Charm background is better controlled by combining the lifetime tag with a tag based on the b/c hadron mass difference. Furthermore, the algorithm used to reconstruct the event primary vertex is designed so as to reduce correlations between the two hemispheres of an event. The value of Rb is measured to be 0.2167 ± 0.0011 (stat) ± 0.0013 (syst).

To support future digital library systems which draw information from different sources on the internet, we have to provide integrated queries to pre-existing database servers which contain structured, semi-structured and unstructured data. In this paper, we specifically examine the problem of querying both existing structured relational databases and bibliographic databases. By adopting the well-accepted Z39.50 standard protocol to access bibliographic databases in different legacy library systems, we have developed an extended SQL model, known as HarpSQL, to support integrated queries to both SQL databases and bibliographic databases.
