Towards Securing Smart Contracts Systematically, Duy Tai Nguyen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Smart contracts are a groundbreaking technique that allows users to programmatically modify the state of the blockchain. They are essentially self-enforcing programs that are deployed and executed on top of the blockchain. In recent years, we have witnessed various smart contract incidents that led to substantial financial losses and even business closures. These incidents mainly arise from design flaws in Solidity, a dominant programming language for writing smart contracts, which complicates the process of detecting and repairing vulnerabilities. Furthermore, there is a growing interest in attacking smart contracts by the attackers. This thesis is dedicated to developing effective methods to …

Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation, Zhaozheng Chen Dec 2023

Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation, Zhaozheng Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental task in computer vision that assigns a label to every pixel in an image based on the semantic meaning of the objects present. It demands a large amount of pixel-level labeled images for training deep models. Weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) is a more feasible approach that uses only weak annotations to learn the segmentation task. Image-level label based WSSS is the most challenging and popular, where only the class label for the entire image is provided as supervision. To address this challenge, Class Activation Map (CAM) has emerged as a powerful technique in WSSS. CAM …

In this paper, I explore the applicability of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) evaluation systems to Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs). I assess these ESG evaluation systems in terms of the overall value of Chinese SOEs and point out that these enterprises do not have their own evaluation system. Establishing an ESG system for Chinese SOEs can encourage them to disclose quantifiable indicators, thus objectively demonstrating their comprehensive ESG performance and helping to enhance their overall value. I examine the current ESG evaluation systems in detail and find that there are many problems in applying the main international evaluation systems to …

The Impact Of Equity Incentive Executive Compensation On Corporate Performance, Bing Ruan Nov 2023

The Impact Of Equity Incentive Executive Compensation On Corporate Performance, Bing Ruan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The management rights and ownership of modern enterprises are often separated. Enterprise owners, i.e. shareholders, pursue the maximization of enterprise profits, while enterprise managers pursue the maximization of their own interests. This leads to conflicts between the two parties in the process of pursuing the maximization of their respective interests. To address the inconsistency of interests in principal-agent relationships, effective corporate governance mechanisms are needed. The equity incentive system is one of the important means for modern enterprises to implement effective human capital management. Its purpose is to bind the personal interests of management with the interests of the enterprise, …

The Cost Of Cheap Talk: How Campaign Promises And Default Contributions Affect Donation-Based Crowd Funding Success., Tianci Leon Qiu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Non-profit organisations (NPOs) find it increasingly harder to engage donors and raise funds from the public. Post-pandemic: the emphasis on tactics to raise funds online through donation-based crowdfunding (DCF) platforms has surged in importance for both NPO survival and continued beneficiary aid. However, unlike equity-based crowdfunding platforms where campaign organisers are obligated to provide investors with tangible returns based on funding milestones, NPOs on DCF platforms do not have to adhere to any funding milestones or are beholden to any tangible obligations towards donors. Consequently, NPOs are greatly incentivised to deploy cheap talk – non-binding, unverifiable messages and claims to …

Mentor Holding Behaviours: The Role Of Supervisors And Effects On Protégés, Menzhong Gao Sep 2023

Mentor Holding Behaviours: The Role Of Supervisors And Effects On Protégés, Menzhong Gao

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The concept of holding behaviours has emerged as a response to the paradox that arises when employees require support but organisations face challenges in providing it. In today’s workplaces, job demands and organisational uncertainty have escalated, rendering traditional, hierarchical support systems inadequate to alleviate anxiety. Holding environments offer a temporary safe space for employees to express emotions and cope with uncertainty and insecurity.

Despite the importance of holding behaviours in addressing self-reliance and support dilemmas, limited research has been conducted on their antecedents, consequences, mechanisms, and boundary conditions. To fill this gap, this study proposes a trickle-down model that integrates …

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In an organization, expressing humility can promote more meaningful and satisfying relationships with others. Given its potentially positive effects, researchers have been interested in studying the promotion and management of expressed humility for decades. Although there is some literature on the mechanism of expressing humility within an organization, none of them has pointed out the positive effects of expressed humility between organizations represented by their boundary-spanning leaders. Specially, no research efforts have been devoted to understanding how expressed humility between partners affects the economic behavior and outcomes of organizations and when it is effective for positive effects.

There has been a growing trend in mainstream media of certain individuals being termed as simps, generally recognized as people who engage in costly or extravagant romantic behaviors toward a romantic interest, but are often met with no reciprocation. It is suggested that simping behaviors appear to be an evolutionarily maladaptive mating strategy where individuals engage in excessive and obsessive behaviors when pursuing a romantic interest. The current research aimed to explore this phenomenon, to identify specific traits and characteristics that are typical of simps and simping behavior. Across a set of two studies comprising an act nomination and act …

Effect Of Leader-Member Exchange Social Comparison On Co-Worker’S Envy And Work Behavior Moderated By Perceived Deservingness Of Star Workers, Ronnie Ng

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The extant leader-member exchange (LMX) literature suggests that leaders establish and develop different quality dyadic relationships with members in the same workgroup. High-quality LMX is argued as beneficial to employees. However, studies have overlooked the emotions and behaviors of low-quality LMX employees to determine how they differ from high-quality LMX employees. This study integrates LMX differentiation literature, social comparison theory and attributional theory to examine the role of LMX social comparison (LMXSC) perceptions in triggering help-seeking and knowledge hiding from star co-workers in the workplace. This study also explores the mediating role of dual envy, that is, benign and malicious …

Reinforcement Learning For Sequential Decision Making With Constraints, Jiajing Ling Jul 2023

Reinforcement Learning For Sequential Decision Making With Constraints, Jiajing Ling

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Reinforcement learning is a widely used approach to tackle problems in sequential decision making where an agent learns from rewards or penalties. However, in decision-making problems that involve safety or limited resources, the agent's exploration is often limited by constraints. To model such problems, constrained Markov decision processes and constrained decentralized partially observable Markov decision processes have been proposed for single-agent and multi-agent settings, respectively. A significant challenge in solving constrained Dec-POMDP is determining the contribution of each agent to the primary objective and constraint violations. To address this issue, we propose a fictitious play-based method that uses Lagrangian Relaxation …

Awe And Relationship Quality, Gloria Junyan Lai May 2023

Awe And Relationship Quality, Gloria Junyan Lai

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The experience of awe has been studied as having self-transcending outcomes that produce a decrease in importance of the individual’s interests and an increase in the interests of others. This shift in self-concept is said to be a sense of self-diminishment vis-à-vis perceived vast stimuli. When applied to a romantic relationship context, it is possible that a shift of attention away from self-serving motives, towards relationship-enhancing motives, may promote positive relationship outcomes. As such, the current study examined how experimentally induced awe may influence relationship commitment and forgiveness via an expected increase in self-diminishment. 607 participants were randomly assigned to …
