Emerging Leadership Identity In Advanced Practice Nursing: Estonia 2019-2026, Kristi Rannus
Emerging Leadership Identity In Advanced Practice Nursing: Estonia 2019-2026, Kristi Rannus
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background and aims: Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) are not only clinical experts but also emerging leaders who shape care delivery, culture, and professional values. While international frameworks define leadership as a core APN competency, little is known about how leadership identity forms during postgraduate education. Estonia provides a unique case, where APN implementation coincides with national policy, service pilots and ongoing organisational adaptation. This study examined how APN master’s students construct their leadership identity during training and how their perceptions evolve over time.
Methods: Longitudinal qualitative research was conducted in a Health Sciences master’s programme between 2019 and 2026. Students …

Despite changes to health care policies and systems, improvement of the quality and safety of patient care have not met expectations because rates of preventable deaths and harm remain high in the U.S. More recently, the promotion of leadership at the point-of-care has been proposed as a strategy for improving the quality and safety of patient care. In the landmark report, The Future of …

Emergence Of Informal Clinical Leadership Among Bedside Nurses In The Acute Care Clinical Setting: A Mixed Methods Study, Darlene M. Rogers
Dissertations
Quality and safety initiatives direct all nurses to lead practice change. Existing nurse leadership research predominantly focuses on formal nursing leaders and overlooks a critical resource pool: informal leaders at the point of care. This study explored influences on the emergence of informal clinical leadership among bedside nurses in the acute care hospital setting. Nurse personal attributes (demographic characteristics, professional experience, and psychological capital) and situational context in the acute care workplace setting were examined as predictors of clinical leadership behavior. The study used a convergent parallel mixed methods design with an exploratory correlational quantitative strand and a descriptive qualitative …

Leadership and followership competencies are a critical competency for nurses. Facilitating the development of these competencies in students is essential to ensure their successful transition into a registered nursing role.
