"Black Knight Checks White King": The Conflict Between Avery Brundage And The African Nations Over South African Membership In The Ioc, Shayne P. Quick

Shayne Quick

Extract: During the 1960s, the conflict within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over South African participation and representation in Olympic affairs reached such heightened stage that tension existed for the greater part of this decade. The intensity and significance of the debate directly related to the power struggle within the IOC during this time. The IOCs conservative hierarchy, led by the organisation's president Avery Brundage, was the leading force seeking to restrain the larger movement to expel the South African National Olympic Committee (SANOC). While the Brundage led group was initially able to ward off this challenge the newly admitted …

A Small Area Simulation Approach To Determining Variation In Dental Procedure Rates, Paula Diehr Nov 1990

A Small Area Simulation Approach To Determining Variation In Dental Procedure Rates, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

All small area analyses need to compare the observed variability in rates to that expected by chance alone, but the expected variability is usually not known. This paper uses patient-level data for five dental procedures to simulate the distributions of the summary statistics that are usually generated in such studies. These statistics are found to vary greatly even under the "null hypothesis" that all dentists are using procedures at the same rates. The simulated dentist rates are compared to observed rates obtained in a different study. These findings illustrate problems that can occur in small area analysis studies, and emphasize …

Use Of A Preferred Provider Plan By Employees Of The City Of Seattle, Paula Diehr Nov 1990

Use Of A Preferred Provider Plan By Employees Of The City Of Seattle, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Little is known about the use of services in a preferred provider organization (PPO). We studied a preferred provider arrangement between Pacific Medical Center and employees of the City of Seattle. In the second 12 months of this program 8,529 subjects submitted at least one claim; of these, only 420 (4.9%) ever used the preferred provider. Those who used the PPO at least once differed significantly from those who never used it on age, sex, employee/dependent status, and utilization in the previous year. Outpatient and total charges were higher for PPO users than for nonusers before and after control for …

Fibrous Lesions Of The Gingiva: A Histopathologic Analysis Of 204 Cases, Rosnah Binti Zain, Fei Y. J. Oct 1990

Fibrous Lesions Of The Gingiva: A Histopathologic Analysis Of 204 Cases, Rosnah Binti Zain, Fei Y. J.

Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Zain

Two hundred four cases of fibrous lesions of the gingiva were studied histologically for the presence of calcified tissue, the nature of the connective tissue, the type of keratinization, and the degree of epithelial thickness. Initially these lesions were subcategorized into four specific entities, namely fibrous epulis, fibroepithelial polyp, calcifying fibroblastic granuloma, and ossifying fibrous epulis. It was found that 46.5% of the lesions contained calcifications. The connective tissue was represented predominantly by either the collagenous type (50.5%) or the mixed (cellular and collagenous) type (44.6%). It was also found that 36% of the lesions were ulcerated, and, of these, …

An Analysis By Means Of Naturalistic Approaches Of Two Complex Behaviors. In Gilbert, Nigel (Ed.) Proceedings Of The Workshop On Complex Systems, Ethnomethodology And Interaction Analysis., Barbara H. Kwasnik

Barbara H. Kwasnik

This paper describes two studies I which naturalistic approaches were used to investigate complex human behaviors. The first study is a description of the way in which people organize their documents in their own offices; the second study aims for a functional description of the behavior known as “browsing”. Both studies use thinking-out-loud protocols, observation, and interviews in the setting in which behaviors take place. The rationale for the choice of techniques is presented along with a discussion of advantages and difficulties.

Diseconomies Of Scale In Employment Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Todd Zenger Jun 1990

Diseconomies Of Scale In Employment Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Todd Zenger

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

We find that small teams can write more efficient incentive contracts than large teams when agents choose individual effort levels but the principal observes only the joint output. This result is helpful in understanding organizational diseconomies of scale and is consistent with both existing evidence and our own analysis of data from the Current Population Survey. Our modelling approach, similar to classical hypothesis testing, is of interest because we need not derive the optimal contract to show the advantage of small teams.

General Relativity Is Dead, Milan Meszaros Mar 1990

General Relativity Is Dead, Milan Meszaros

Milan Meszaros physicist

The intent of the present study is to analize standard cosmology in an immanent mathematical-critical way. First of all, the fundamental statements of this cosmological model will be investigated themselves as well as their relevation to the theory. Further aims are to reveal the interdependence of different physical disciplines, confrontation of various observations, to elucidate the correlations between observed data and theory and, finally, to analyze this cosmology from the point of view of self-consistency.

The study discusses the status of the standard modell.

What Is Too Much Variation? The Null Hypothesis In Small-Area Analysis, Paula Diehr Feb 1990

What Is Too Much Variation? The Null Hypothesis In Small-Area Analysis, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

A small-area analysis (SAA) in health services research often calculates surgery rates for several small areas, compares the largest rate to the smallest, notes that the difference is large, and attempts to explain this discrepancy as a function of service availability, physician practice styles, or other factors. SAAs are often difficult to interpret because there is little theoretical basis for determining how much variation would be expected under the null hypothesis that all of the small areas have similar underlying surgery rates and that the observed variation is due to chance. We developed a computer program to simulate the distribution …

Analise Quantitativa Do Currículo Escolar [Quantitative Analysis Of The School Curriculum], Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

Genotypic And Chemical Influences On Fruit Growth Of Tomato, Henry R. Owen, Louis H. Aung Jan 1990

Genotypic And Chemical Influences On Fruit Growth Of Tomato, Henry R. Owen, Louis H. Aung

Henry R. Owen

A relationship between ovary size at anthesis and final fruit diameter of 12 tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cultivars with a range of fruit sizes, shapes, and maturation rates was determined. ‘Fireball’, ‘Michigan/Ohio Hybrid’, and ‘New Yorker’ produced nonfasciated, spherical fruits of intermediate maturation rate and showed a significantly higher correlation between ovary diameter at anthesis and final fruit diameter than ‘Small Fry’, ‘Roma VF’, ‘Early Cascade’, ‘Campbell 1327’, or ‘Ponderosa’. A linear regression of final fruit diameter at maturity on ovary diameter at anthesis of the cultivars was highly significant (r2 = 0.92**; ÿ = 22.5X - 0.3). Continuous root …

Food Quality, Heterozygosity, And Fitness Correlates In Peromyscus Polionotus, James M. Novak, William R. Teska, Michael H.. Smith

James M. Novak

Oldfield mice (Peromyscus polionotus) that are more heterozygous utilize food and maintain body weight under varying degrees of dietary stress better than their less heterozygous counterparts. Mice were collected in southern Florida and fed diets of three qualities. During each dietary treatment, body weight, amount of food eaten, amount of food absorbed, and feeding efficiency were determined. Body weights for all mice decreased during the experiment. More heterozygous mice maintained their weight better during periods of dietary stress than those that were less heterozygous. Mice with different levels of genetic variability had essentially the same mean feeding efficiency with high …

Morphological Asymmetry And Interspecific Hybridization: A Case Study Using Hylid Frogs, Trip Lamb, James M. Novak, Diane L. Mahoney Jan 1990

Morphological Asymmetry And Interspecific Hybridization: A Case Study Using Hylid Frogs, Trip Lamb, James M. Novak, Diane L. Mahoney

James M. Novak

The limited studies addressing developmental stability of interspecific hybrids suggest a positive association between the level of fluctuating asymmetry and 1) the degree of divergence between parental species, and 2) the recency of the contact zone. To evaluate these associations, we examined asymmetry in a recentlyestablished hybrid population of treefrogs (Hyla cinerea and H. gratiosa) that show marked structural gene divergence. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), directional asymmetry, and antisymmetry were assessed for eight paired osteometric traits in allozymically-defined parental and hybrid categories. FA levels varied considerably among traits. Nonetheless, for any given trait, the hybrid categories did not demonstrate elevated levels …

The Deanship, Frank Cortez Flores Jan 1990

The Deanship, Frank Cortez Flores

Frank Cortez Flores

THE DEANSHIP: A DIMENSION OF ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP Abstract This study will investigate the role of the dean as identified in the relevant literature; its purpose is to provide an in-depth analysis of the deanship based on leadership role theory. The description in the literature of effective academic leaders is that these leaders are trustworthy, have a clear vision of their school's future, and are able to inspire a shared vision among divergent individuals and groups (Bennis and Norris, 1985). According to Dibden (1968), academic deans are concerned with the effective functioning of an educational unit, promoting scholarship among faculty, facilitating …

Sex-Role Identity And Mental Ability, Gregory J. Boyle, Michael E. Bernard, Beverly F. Jackling Jan 1990

Sex-Role Identity And Mental Ability, Gregory J. Boyle, Michael E. Bernard, Beverly F. Jackling

Gregory J. Boyle

The central concern of this study was to explore the relationship between sex-role identity (measured by a bi-dimensional scale of masculinity and femininity) and field independence and scholastic intelligence. One hundred and forty Australian males and 181 females in grades 11 and 12 completed the Witkin Group Embedded Figures Test, the Otis Higher Test C of intelligence and a shortened version of the Bem Sex Role Identity Questionnaire. The correlation between performance on the Witkins and Otis was 0.53. Males performed significantly better on the Witkin and Otis than females. Males with lower masculinity scores scored better on the Otis …

Stanford-Binet Iv Intelligence Scale: Is Its Structure Supported By Lisrel Congeneric Factor Analyses?, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

Boyle (Personality and Individual Differences, 10, 709-715, 1989b) conducted an iterative principal factoring and oblique rotation of the standardisation sample (n = 5,013) for the revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (Fourth Edition). Nevertheless, because of the exploratory methodology employed, the results were problematic. Keith, Cool, Novak, White and Pottebaum (1988)-(Journal of School Psychology, 26, 253-274) had previously carried out a confirmatory factor analysis and had concluded that the results supported the four Area dimensions (Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract/Visual Reasoning, and Short-Term Memory) in the new instrument. As congeneric factor analysis via LISREL has not yet been performed, the present paper …

Personality Characteristics Of Direct-Service Personnel In Community Residential Units, Gregory J. Boyle, Peter G. Comer Jan 1990

Personality Characteristics Of Direct-Service Personnel In Community Residential Units, Gregory J. Boyle, Peter G. Comer

Gregory J. Boyle

This study examined the personality profile of direct service personnel employed in community residential units for the intellectually disabled. Comprehensive assessment of both the normal and abnormal personality trait domains was carried out for a sample of 110 employees, using the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire (CAQ), a psychometric instrument which provides extensive coverage of the adult personality sphere. Mean CAQ scores for the sample implied a generally satisfactory level of emotional adjustment. Overall, direct service personnel exhibited a non-aberrant profile of personality trait scores across both the normal and abnormal CAQ factors. There was a notable lack of psychopathology. Only the …

Compliance Gaining On Prime Time Family Programs, Margaret Haefner, Jamie Comstock

Jayne Marie Comstock

Studies compliance gaining behaviors among characters in 18 prime time television programs. Finds that situation comedies were more likely than dramas to contain family characters who attempted to gain compliance. Finds that parental characters were more likely than children to seek and achieve compliance. Compares results to "real life" parental compliance gaining attempts.

Infiltration Rate As Affected By An Alfalfa And No-Till Cotton Cropping System, Burl D. Meek, William R. Detar, D. Rolph, Eric A. Rechel, Lyle M. Carter Jan 1990

Infiltration Rate As Affected By An Alfalfa And No-Till Cotton Cropping System, Burl D. Meek, William R. Detar, D. Rolph, Eric A. Rechel, Lyle M. Carter

William R DeTar

Previous studies measured a long-term increase in infiltration rate in a sandy loam soil with time when alfalfa (Medicago saliva L., cv. WL514) was grown. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was directplanted into alfalfa to determine if the high infiltration rates measured under alfalfa culture could be maintained in cotton under either a till or no-till system. Treatments were no-till or tillage to the 0.15 - m depth just before the cotton was planted. Prior compaction levels created by harvest traffic applied to the alfalfa made the soil loose or compacted. Cotton was planted flat and irrigated as a basin. Infiltration …

The Effect Of Selenium On Sulfur Uptake By Barley And Rice, Robert Mikkelsen, Hongfu Wan Jan 1990

The Effect Of Selenium On Sulfur Uptake By Barley And Rice, Robert Mikkelsen, Hongfu Wan

Robert Mikkelsen

Because of their chemical and physical similarities, plant uptake of sulfur and selenium are closely related. Barley and rice were grown in greenhouse solution culture to examine the synergistic interactions between sulfate and selenate in plant uptake. In the presence of low concentrations of solution sulfate, shoot and root yields were decreased with additions of selenate. However, when sulfate was present in elevated concentrations, no selenium-induced yield reductions occurred. A synergistic interaction between sulfate and selenate caused an increase in the shoot sulfur concentrations with increasing concentrations of selenate at low sulfate solution concentrations. At elevated sulfate concentrations, no synergism …

Biuret In Urea Fertilizer, Robert Mikkelsen Jan 1990

Biuret In Urea Fertilizer, Robert Mikkelsen

Robert Mikkelsen

Urea has become the leading form of N fertilizer worldwide. Historically there has been concern about biuret formed during the manufacturing of urea fertilizer and the potential adverse effect of biuret on plant growth. In this paper, the fate of biuret in soils and its phytotoxicity is reviewed. Biuret is mineralized by many soil micoorganisms, but the process is much slower than for urea. Excessively high biuret concentrations can damage seedlings and, like urea, should not be placed in close proximity to germinating seeds. Crop tolerance to biuret varies according to the plant species, soil conditions, fertilizer placement, and method …
