The Lessons I Never Took, Nadia Luong

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

“The Lessons I Never Took” is a lyric poem rooted in the author’s experience growing up as a first-generation Cambodian American child in an immigrant family. The poem examines how socioeconomic hardship and language brokering shape a child’s relationship to desire, responsibility, and unrealized possibility. While other children receive formal lessons that allow their interests and talents to be discovered, the speaker develops unrecognized interpretive skill by helping her parents navigate English-speaking institutions. Without assigning blame, the poem holds parental sacrifice and childhood loss together, revealing how survival can limit not only access to enrichment but also a child’s opportunity …

Convergent Manufacturing Of Metal-Ceramic Architectures For High-Temperature Environments, Sk Shamim Hasan Abir, Joni C. Dhar, Sandipan Mishra, Daniel Lewis, Johnson Samuel

MMRL-XMO Industrial Seminar

High-temperature thermal barrier systems require a graded architecture that transitions from a metallic substrate to a ceramic top coat to mitigate damage caused by mismatches in coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE). This study presents a convergent manufacturing strategy that integrates twisted wire gas tungsten arc (GTA) surfacing with cold sintering (CS), followed by CO₂ laser sintering, to fabricate a robust thermal barrier. High entropy alloy (HEA) bond coats with Al-Cr-Fe-Ni-based compositions were deposited onto Inconel 625 substrates using semi-automatically twisted commercial welding wires (Inconel 625, SS308Lsi, and Al ER4043) via GTA surfacing, resulting in HEA layers predominantly composed of >60 …

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Interacting with animals can improve health and well-being across the lifespan. Some programs such as 4-H and FFA center around youth interacting with animals, potentially enhancing youth development. Mueller (2014) investigated whether these interactions and attitudes about animals influenced measures of positive youth development. The aim of our studies was to replicate Mueller’s methods and extend her work by evaluating whether membership in animal-focused youth programs moderate associations between interactions, attitudes, and positive youth development. We did not find strong relationships among human–animal inter-action and positive youth development, which failed to replicate Mueller’s findings. However, we did find relationships between …

Neurodivergent Peer Tutoring And Anti-Ableism: Two High Schoolers’ Lived Experiences While Working In A Neurodiversity-Based Writing Center, Daniel S. Harrison

The Writing Center Journal

Neurodivergence is naturally present in the writing center and most often recognized by labels like ADHD, autism, OCD, dyslexia, and so on. However, neurodivergent voices in writing center scholarship have been few and far between in postsecondary institutions (Babcock, 2017; Batt, 2018; Kleinfeld, 2023), and in the secondary writing center even less so. Therefore, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the personal, relational, and formative aspects of the lived experiences of two neurodivergent students through a critical disability theory lens as they provided writing consultations to their neurodivergent peers in a Mid-Atlantic, independent special education school. …
