Analyzing The Effect Of Air Pollution Regulations On Aerosol Concentrations In Urban Areas, Bode Hoover Jul 2019

Analyzing The Effect Of Air Pollution Regulations On Aerosol Concentrations In Urban Areas, Bode Hoover

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

Aerosols, any solid or liquid suspended in air, have significant environmental and biological effects. Fine particulate matter can cause serious respiratory issues and aerosols in the atmosphere absorb and reflect radiation which can warm or cool the atmosphere, respectively. This study compares air quality at two urban areas, the city of Wilmington, CA in the United States and the city of Arequipa, Peru. Concentrations of emissions are under higher regulation standards in California than in Peru which is a developing country. Air filters that measured total suspended particles were collected every 24 hours on Marine Avenue in Wilmington, CA and …

Gas-Phase And Condensed-Phase Studies Of Small Reactive Intermediates, Christopher William Haskins Aug 2018

Gas-Phase And Condensed-Phase Studies Of Small Reactive Intermediates, Christopher William Haskins

Open Access Dissertations

Nitriles are an integral functional group in many chemical industries. A new methodology for the dehydration of amides to nitriles has been developed using a palladium catalyst. The reaction conditions are robust and able to tolerate a wide variety of functional groups and substrates. The substrate scope can be broken into 4 main types of substrates including: alkyl, aromatic, cinnamic, and α, β, δ, γ-unsaturated amides. Mechanistically, the amide goes through a water exchanging mechanism to generate acetamide in equal parts to the nitrile. Cyclopropanols are important precursors for the generation of beta-carbonyl radicals. In the presence of a single-electron …

A Molecular Perspective For The Understanding Of Polymer‒Drug Interactions, Laura Isabel Mosquera Giraldo May 2018

A Molecular Perspective For The Understanding Of Polymer‒Drug Interactions, Laura Isabel Mosquera Giraldo

Open Access Dissertations

Polymers are often used to stabilize amorphous drug formulations enabling the maintenance of high drug supersaturations. However, the molecular mechanism of stabilization is unclear, making the rational design of new polymers challenging. This research has focused on understanding the effectiveness of polymers to inhibit drug crystallization using experimental and computational modeling approaches. This thesis has six sections. The first section reviews the pharmaceutical significance of amorphous solid dispersions. The second section describes a study to evaluate the phase behavior of supersaturated drug solutions of telaprevir, a compound that undergoes glass-liquid phase separation when the amorphous solubility is exceeded. The third …

Microstructural Evolution During The Homogenization Heat Treatment Of 6xxx And 7xxx Aluminum Alloys, Pikee Priya Dec 2016

Microstructural Evolution During The Homogenization Heat Treatment Of 6xxx And 7xxx Aluminum Alloys, Pikee Priya

Open Access Dissertations

Homogenization heat treatment of as-cast billets is an important step in the processing of aluminum extrusions. Microstructural evolution during homogenization involves elimination of the eutectic morphology by spheroidisation of the interdendritic phases, minimization of the microsegregation across the grains through diffusion, dissolution of the low-melting phases, which enhances the surface finish of the extrusions, and precipitation of nano-sized dispersoids (for Cr-, Zr-, Mn-, Sc-containing alloys), which inhibit grain boundary motion to prevent recrystallization. Post-homogenization cooling reprecipitates some of the phases, changing the flow stress required for subsequent extrusion. These precipitates, however, are deleterious for the mechanical properties of the alloy …

Pushing And Pulling Sara: A Case Study Of The Contrasting Influences Of High School And University Experiences On Engineering Agency, Identity, And Participation, Allison Godwin, Geoff Potvin Sep 2016

Pushing And Pulling Sara: A Case Study Of The Contrasting Influences Of High School And University Experiences On Engineering Agency, Identity, And Participation, Allison Godwin, Geoff Potvin

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

This manuscript reports on a longitudinal case study of how one woman, Sara, who had previously considered dropping out of high school authored strong mathematics and science identities and purposefully exhibited agency through her experiences in high school science. These experiences empowered her to choose an engineering major in college; however, her introductory university engineering experiences ultimately pushed her out of engineering. Drawing on critical agency theory, we argue that by paying careful attention to how and why women author their identities and build agency through their experiences in high school, we may gain insight into why women may choose …

Instrumentation And Development Of A Mass Spectrometry System For The Study Of Gas-Phase Biomolecular Ion Reactions, Ziqing Lin Jan 2015

Instrumentation And Development Of A Mass Spectrometry System For The Study Of Gas-Phase Biomolecular Ion Reactions, Ziqing Lin

Open Access Dissertations

Gas-phase reactions of biomolecular ions are highly relevant to the understanding of structures and functions of the biomolecules. Mass spectrometry is a powerful tool in investigating gas-phase ion chemistry. Various mass spectrometers have been developed to explore ion/molecule reactions, ion/ion reactions, ion/photon reactions, ion/radical reactions etc., both at atmospheric pressure and in vacuum. In-vacuum reactions have an advantage of involving pre-selecting the ions for the reactions using a mass analyzer. Over the decades, a variety of mass analyzers have been employed in the research of ion chemistry. Hybrid configurations, such as quadrupole ion trap with a time-of-flight and or a …

Main Determinants For Iii-V Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (Invited), P. D. Ye Jul 2008

Main Determinants For Iii-V Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (Invited), P. D. Ye

Birck and NCN Publications

Lacking a suitable gate insulator, practical GaAs metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) have remained all but a dream for more than four decades. The physics and chemistry of III-V compound semiconductor surfaces or interfaces are problems so complex that our understanding is still limited even after enormous research efforts. Most research is focused on surface pretreatments, oxide formation, and dielectric materials; less attention is paid to the Ill-V substrate itself. The purpose of this article is to show that device physics more related to III-V substrates is as important as surface chemistry for realizing high-performance III-V MOSFETs. The history and present …

Atomic-Layer-Deposited Nanostructures For Graphene-Based Nanoelectronics, Yi Xuan, Y Q. Wu, T Shen, Minghao Qi, Michael A. Capano, James A. Cooper, P. D. Ye

Birck and NCN Publications

Graphene is a hexagonally bonded sheet of carbon atoms that exhibits superior transport properties with a velocity of 10(8) cm/s and a room-temperature mobility of >15 000 cm(2)/V s. How to grow gate dielectrics on graphene with low defect states is a challenge for graphene-based nanoelectronics. Here, we present the growth behavior of Al2O3 and HfO2 films on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) by atomic layer deposition (ALD). To our surprise, large numbers of Al2O3 and HfO2 nanoribbons, with dimensions of 5-200 nm in width and >50 mu m in length, are observed on HOPG surfaces at growth temperature between …
