Effects Of Urbanization On Dissolved Carbon And Nutrients In The Johnson Creek Watershed On Long-Term Temporal Scales, Jacob Rudolph, Jennifer L. Morse, Rebecca L. Hale Mar 2024

Effects Of Urbanization On Dissolved Carbon And Nutrients In The Johnson Creek Watershed On Long-Term Temporal Scales, Jacob Rudolph, Jennifer L. Morse, Rebecca L. Hale

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the largest flux of carbon in streams, is a vital metric in urban stream ecology that is often overlooked, especially on seasonal scales. Microorganisms metabolize DOC, which can decrease dissolved oxygen and pH and harm other aquatic species. Johnson Creek watershed, located in the Portland metro area, provides an ideal location to study the effect of urbanization on DOC and water quality resulting from channelization and urban land. We hypothesize that DOC will increase downstream as impervious surface cover and urbanization increase. To quantify DOC concentration temporal changes, surface water samples were collected weekly from three …

Spatial Analysis Of Landscape Characteristics, Anthropogenic Factors, And Seasonality Effects On Water Quality In Portland, Oregon, Katherine Gelsey, Daniel Ramirez, Heejun Chang Mar 2022

Spatial Analysis Of Landscape Characteristics, Anthropogenic Factors, And Seasonality Effects On Water Quality In Portland, Oregon, Katherine Gelsey, Daniel Ramirez, Heejun Chang

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

Urban areas often struggle with deteriorated water quality as a result of complex interactions between landscape factors such as land cover, use, and management as well as climatic variables such as weather, precipitation, and atmospheric conditions. Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) has been introduced as a strategy to reintroduce pre-development hydrological conditions in cities, but questions remain as to how GSI interacts with other landscape factors to affect water quality. We conducted a statistical analysis of six relevant water quality indicators in 131 water quality stations in four watersheds around Portland, Oregon using data from 2015 to 2021. E. coli and …

Heavy Metal Deposition In Epiphytes In Downtown Portland, Or In Areas Of Tear Gas Munitions Detonation, Evelyn A. Haase Mar 2022

Heavy Metal Deposition In Epiphytes In Downtown Portland, Or In Areas Of Tear Gas Munitions Detonation, Evelyn A. Haase

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

Protests over the summer of 2020 in support of the Black Lives Matter movement saw a dramatic increase in the use of Riot Control Agents (RCAs), namely tear gas, in response to protestors. Tear gas munitions contain heavy metals, notably zinc (Zn) as a smoke screen agent. Historically, lichens and mosses have been used to assess environmental quality, particularly heavy metal deposition. Lichens and mosses are known bioaccumulators and therefore bioindicators. Air pollution negatively impacts the frequency and density of lichens in urban areas. However, mosses are less sensitive to variation in air quality than lichens. To assess the heavy …

Repeat Topographic Surveys Combining Lidar With Uav Structure From Motion Data For Change Detection Of Two Landslides, Nick Wagner Mar 2021

Repeat Topographic Surveys Combining Lidar With Uav Structure From Motion Data For Change Detection Of Two Landslides, Nick Wagner

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

Repeat topographic surveys are used for detecting changes in dynamic environments. The findings of repeat topographic surveys conducted on two landslides in the Tillamook State Forest of northwest Oregon are presented. Both landslides occurred on steep slopes with histories of industrial forestry. This study was conducted to measure the areas and volumes of erosion and deposition associated with each landslide. Baseline topographic data, captured prior to the landslides, was from free, publicly available lidar data from state-sponsored manned aircraft surveys. Data from after the landslides was collected using low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and processed using standard Structure from Motion …

Trail Impact Monitoring In Forest Park, James Mitchell Mar 2021

Trail Impact Monitoring In Forest Park, James Mitchell

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

Forest Park is an appropriately named 5,200-acre natural area located in northwest Portland, Oregon. A recent study estimated park usage near half a million annual visits and found “trails” to be the park’s most highly valued feature. Unfortunately, many trails were not designed for such traffic as evidenced by slipping hazards, erosion and other ecological impacts. In response to these observations, I partnered with Portland Parks & Recreation to conduct an objective trail impact assessment prescribed by the Forest Park Natural Resource Management Plan (NRMP). I modified methods from past studies to expand on a recently completed trail condition class …

Invasive Species Mapping And Community Outreach At Mary S. Young State Park, Julian Roth, Kylee Church Mar 2021

Invasive Species Mapping And Community Outreach At Mary S. Young State Park, Julian Roth, Kylee Church

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

Early detection and rapid response of invasive species outbreaks is important in preventing significant damage to the environment and cost to management efforts. Ongoing invasive species management occurs at Mary S. Young Park, a state park in West Linn, Oregon. To better inform volunteer eradication efforts and utilize citizen science, the need to map current and future invasive outbreaks using spatial analysis has emerged. Using Google Maps and ArcGIS, invasive species outbreaks were located and mapped to show species frequency and spatial distribution. We discovered a high frequency of English Holly (Ilex aquifolium), and suggest the species poses …

Mapping Oak Within The Rcs Bundary, Lori Hennings

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

The Oak Prairie Work Group’s Oregon white oak map is nearly complete. All areas within the >2,800-square mile Intertwine Alliance Regional Conservation Strategy (RCS) boundary will be finished by June 30, 2018. We will describe the mapping process and show the results. Purpose: This work fulfills a high priority RCS goal. The results will be used to update RCS habitat maps; prioritize important oak habitat and connectivity areas; and support effective, collaborative habitat protection, stewardship and education. Methods: In 2012 we collected field samples of oak habitat to help develop a potential remote sensing model approach. From 2013-2015 Metro used …
