Hack All The History! Hackers 1959 - 1991, Kevin Vilbig Jun 2013

Hack All The History! Hackers 1959 - 1991, Kevin Vilbig

University Honors Theses

This thesis examines what a hacker is and explores an idea that has received a lot of recent attention: Information should be free. It also asks the question: Should information be free? Within a university or other research institution, or when the information has little to no commercial, strategic, political, or popular value, the answer is why not?

A Method For Simulating Acoustic Emissions From Tensile Cracks In Sea Ice, Muciri Nyamu Gatimu Jun 2013

A Method For Simulating Acoustic Emissions From Tensile Cracks In Sea Ice, Muciri Nyamu Gatimu

University Honors Theses

As the seasons change, sea ice in the polar regions undergoes a freeze-thaw cycle producing anisotropic sea ice in terms of physical properties and structures. Deformation of these variable structures from the freeze-thaw cycle and flux of energy within the polar regions causes the ice to fracture radiating noise into the water. Simulating the noise from sea ice is difficult due to the variability in the physical properties of sea ice, dynamic environment of the polar regions, complex physics governing sound propagation and numerous methods by which the emission of noise can be generated from sea ice. The radiated ambient …

Thinking Through Consciousness, Erica Hanson Jun 2013

Thinking Through Consciousness, Erica Hanson

University Honors Theses

Consciousness is difficult to pin down. Most human beings go about their days with full and more or less uninterrupted consciousness, without contemplating their own (or other peoples’) conscious states. To be in the world, and accomplish great acts takes little metaawareness of consciousness, but in the study of consciousness our inability to think outside of our conscious states creates controversies at the conceptual and methodological levels. As Victor Lamme states (2006), even when we set aside the more difficult (or more poorly defined) questions about conscious experience to focus on finding the neural correlates of consciousness (NCC), we face …

Use Of Gender Aschematicity In The Reassessment Of Gender Concepts, Ashley A. Ward Jun 2013

Use Of Gender Aschematicity In The Reassessment Of Gender Concepts, Ashley A. Ward

University Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to reevaluate the binary constructs of sex and gender; and the biological and social influence these constructs have on males, females, and non-normative individuals. Throughout this examination, biological, specifically chromosomal and anatomical, differences between sexes will help foster a definition of sex. Psychological theories will then be examined, calculating the psychological and social factors surrounding gender. A reevaluation of gender constructs will shed light on previously held misconceptions about gender and help lay groundwork for non-normative gender acceptance in the future. Furthermore, the thesis will delve into gender aschematicity and potential benefits of gender …

The Linguistics Of Sentiment Analysis, Laurel Hart May 2013

The Linguistics Of Sentiment Analysis, Laurel Hart

University Honors Theses

Computational linguistics is a field that was founded by linguists, but more recently is the domain of more computer scientists than linguists. Use of data driven and machine learning methods for computational linguistics applications is now more common than handwritten linguistic rules. In order for a linguist to enter the field, it is essential that he or she be familiar with methods and techniques from computer science. The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first is to serve as a linguist's introduction to concepts from outside of linguistics that are used in computational linguistics. The second purpose is to …

Classical Political Philosophy And Modern Democracy, Rebekkah Brainerd May 2013

Classical Political Philosophy And Modern Democracy, Rebekkah Brainerd

University Honors Theses

This paper will be looking at the classical political theories of Plato, Aristotle and Thucydides on democracy to prove they are still relevant and applicable, as well as looking into the problem of democratic corruption. This paper will be split into three sections. The first section will explore these philosophers' theories on different types of constitutions and explore what forms the basis for their theories upon democracy. The second section will develop an applicable "classical political theory on democracy," distilled from these authors' arguments. The final section will be applying classical political theory to contemporary American trends to show how …

Utilizing Affinity Spaces And Critical Literacies For Multi-Media Language Learning : I Can Has L3arning On Teh Interwebz Plz?, Allison Lemcke-Kibby

University Honors Theses

In this study I will demonstrate students' personal use of the technology and online affinity spaces outside of the second and foreign language classroom. These affinity spaces allow users to discuss, explore and solve writing and reading related problems while textually constructing and exploring their identities. Language learners' use of fan fiction is the main focus of this analysis because it provides a significant outlet to examine literacy oriented language skills. I will analyze three case studies on language learners' production of fan fiction texts through a critical literacy framework which concentrate on three of the main characteristics of using …

Synthesis Of Sulfamoyl‐Aminoacyl Adenylate Analogs For Use In Protein‐Rna Structure Determination, Emil Mikael Nilsson May 2013

Synthesis Of Sulfamoyl‐Aminoacyl Adenylate Analogs For Use In Protein‐Rna Structure Determination, Emil Mikael Nilsson

University Honors Theses

Substrate analogs are small molecules that aid in the understanding of enzyme structure-‐function relationships. By careful design they can be utilized to probe the nature of the transition state in catalysis, and to assist in the process of rational drug design. Aminoacyl-‐sulfamoyl adenylate transition state analogs (aa-‐ AMS) are analogs of the aminoacyl adenylate reaction intermediate in aminoacylation by aminoacyl-‐tRNA synthetases (aaRS). To better understand the chemical mechanism of aaRS, aa-‐AMS are used in crystallography experiments where x-‐ray diffraction helps reveal interactions crucial to catalysis. Here we report the complete synthesis and purification of Ile-‐AMS. The four-‐step process proceeds via …

How Old Regimes Help New Economic Growth, Bondon Kawamoto May 2013

How Old Regimes Help New Economic Growth, Bondon Kawamoto

University Honors Theses

In this essay, I argue that the flexibility the Meiji regime embraced was the key to the successful economic development, allowing the leaders to retain continuities from the Tokugawa regime, and enabling the Meiji leaders to import advanced technology from the European powers. This essay will seek to establish a connection between the Tokugawa regime and the Meiji regime, discussing how the Tokugawa regime affected Meiji Japan and the economic effects therein. By examining two legacies left by the Tokugawa era, the education system and the outside curiosity with things of the West, I will argue that these institutions affected …

Building Stories: Modernity, Socialization And Failure In Works Of Franz Kafka And Hannah Arendt, Chris Carpenter Jan 2013

Building Stories: Modernity, Socialization And Failure In Works Of Franz Kafka And Hannah Arendt, Chris Carpenter

University Honors Theses

For both Hannah Arendt and Franz Kafka modernity is a matter of loss. Arendt articulates this loss as coeval with the rise of 'society' and the subsumption of the public sphere by the private. Kafka is more oblique, but I believe his fiction describes the same kind of socialization process, a process that leads to alienation, loss of agency, and ultimately, failure. By reading Kafka through an Arendtian lens I show how each writer's conception of modernity complements the others. By integrating Walter Benjamin's influential reading, I show how Kafka's ideas of 'progress' and 'knowledge', subsumed under the social, inevitably …

Lacan, Ideology, And Military Behavioral Health: Exploring Interpellation Psychodiscursively, Joseph R. Van Der Naald Jan 2013

Lacan, Ideology, And Military Behavioral Health: Exploring Interpellation Psychodiscursively, Joseph R. Van Der Naald

University Honors Theses

Recent research in psychosocial studies that draws on a theoretical framework of Lacanian psychoanalysis has granted social psychology with a rich understanding of individuals’ investments in discursive subject positions. The Lacanian psychosocial conception of subjectivity considers how multiple paradoxical narratives, conditioned by desire, form a complex subject constituted through discourse. However, this paradigm has yet to produce a psychosocial discursive analysis of subjection via ideological interpellation. This discourse analysis combines psychoanalytic cultural criticism with Lacanian psychosocial studies to produce an analytic methodology. The thesis then employs this methodology to examine a case study of three interview transcripts from Dr. Janice …

An Examination Of Gentrification And Related Displacement Of Black Residents In Portland's Boise Neighborhood, 1990-2010, Jordan Jordan Jan 2013

An Examination Of Gentrification And Related Displacement Of Black Residents In Portland's Boise Neighborhood, 1990-2010, Jordan Jordan

University Honors Theses

Issues related to gentrification and its primary consequence, the displacement of vulnerable populations from their homes and communities, are rightly considered among the most pressing social concerns faced by urban communities. Portland, Oregon has seen many of its neighborhoods undergo the gentrification transition, especially in traditionally Black neighborhoods. The Boise neighborhood lies within Northeast Portland's Albina district, which has served as the cultural and commercial heart of Portland's Black community for generations. In the 1990 Census, over 70% of the population of Boise (situated within Multnomah County Census tract 34.02) were Black, while 26% were White. By 2010, those figures …

Beyond "Rockhood" - Stigma, Diversity, And Renewal In A Suburban Portland Neighborhood, Alison Hébert Jan 2013

Beyond "Rockhood" - Stigma, Diversity, And Renewal In A Suburban Portland Neighborhood, Alison Hébert

University Honors Theses

This study examines the reasons for the high levels of perceived disorder in on suburban Portland neighborhood. It examines Census data, crime data, and media covered of the Rockwood neighborhood. Rockwood, increasingly diverse in recent years, suffers from developmental neglect, with much of the neighborhood a food desert. Despite its reputation and high population density, the neighborhood does not have a major crime problem, and given Portland's complicated racial history and the gentrification in the city, this study concludes that the reason for Rockwood's bad neighborhood reputation is racially motivated.

(Ad)Dressing The Other: The Amazon In Greek Art, Annaliese Elaine Patten Jan 2013

(Ad)Dressing The Other: The Amazon In Greek Art, Annaliese Elaine Patten

University Honors Theses

The mythological Amazon represents the opposite of Greek ideals, contrasting the Ancient Greek identity and their societal ideals. In this thesis, I reconsider the role of the Amazon in Greek art between 750 and 400 BCE with particular focus on costume as an indication of a gendered and ethnic Other. This construction of the Other is conveyed through poetic description and visual motif in the minor arts. Responding to previous discourse, I will provide an alternative exploration of Athenian propensity to relegate unwanted foreign traits into the portrayal of the Amazon. The illustrated clothing is adapted to the scope of …

An Inquiry Into The Division Of Labor, Raul Reyes Jan 2013

An Inquiry Into The Division Of Labor, Raul Reyes

University Honors Theses

This inquiry seeks to establish that Adam Smith relies upon his books The Theory of Moral Sentiments [1959] and An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations [1776] as complementary texts to introduce and develop his ideas. We will begin with a background of economic thinkers prior to Smith. After summarizing an example of this division of labor by Adam Smith, we will delve into the benefits of the division of labor: more skilled workers, time efficiency, and the invention of proper machinery. Similarly, we will examine the implications brought by this division of labor with …

Neo-Kraepelinian Divergences From Kraepelin : What Are They And Why They Matter, Lindsay Hoeschen Jan 2013

Neo-Kraepelinian Divergences From Kraepelin : What Are They And Why They Matter, Lindsay Hoeschen

University Honors Theses

Throughout its development, psychiatry has struggled to legitimate itself as a scientific and medical discipline. Much of this struggle has been attributed to a lack of consensus regarding the nature of mental illness as well as a standard methodology for making diagnoses. In an attempt to eliminate this impediment to psychiatry's scientific advancement, the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) was published in 1980 with significant methodological changes to the nature of classification and approach to clinical diagnoses. Similar to the characterization of modern psychiatry as being amidst a Kraepelinian revival, this highly influential …
