Hospital Medicine

OBJECTIVE: This guideline will provide the practicing endocrinologist with an approach to the assessment and treatment of dyslipidemia in patients with endocrine diseases, with the objective of preventing cardiovascular (CV) events and triglyceride-induced pancreatitis. The guideline reviews data on dyslipidemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk in patients with endocrine disorders and discusses the evidence for the correction of dyslipidemia by treatment of the endocrine disease. The guideline also addresses whether treatment of the endocrine disease reduces ASCVD risk.

CONCLUSION: This guideline focuses on lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities associated with endocrine diseases, including diabetes mellitus, and whether treatment of the …

In this study, we examined parents' (n = 260) perceptions of their own and their children's use of social media and other types of communication technologies in the beginning stages of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related sanctions (e.g., social distancing) in the United States. We also examined associations between social media and technology use and anxiety. On average, parents reported that both they and their children (especially teenagers aged 13-18) had increased technology and social media use since the beginning of social distancing. Moreover, even after controlling for demographic factors, structural equation models showed that parents and children with …

Recent empirical data suggests that the majority of adolescents and emerging adults utilize digital technology to engage with texting and social media on a daily basis, with many using these mediums to engage in sexting (sending sexual texts, pictures, or videos via digital mediums). While research in the last decade has disproportionately focused on the potential risk factors and negative consequences associated with sexting, the data are limited by failing to differentiate consensual from non-consensual sexting and account for potential influences of intimate partner aggression (IPA) and sexting coercion in these contexts. In the current study, we assessed the positive …

Reaching Consensus On A Home Infusion Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection Surveillance Definition Via A Modified Delphi Approach., Sara Keller, Alejandra Salinas, Deborah Williams, Mary Mcgoldrick, Lisa Gorski, Mary Alexander, Anne Norris, Jennifer Charron, R. Scott Stienecker Md, Catherine Passaretti, Lisa Maragakis, Sara E Cosgrove

Infection Control

BACKGROUND: A consensus on a central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) surveillance definition in home infusion is needed to standardize measurement and benchmark CLABSI to provide data to drive improvement initiatives METHODS: Experts across fields including home infusion therapy, infectious diseases, and healthcare epidemiology convened to perform a 3-step modified Delphi approach to obtain input and achieve consensus on a candidate home infusion CLABSI definition.

RESULTS: The numerator criterion was identified by participants as involving one of the 2 following: (1) recognized pathogen isolated from blood culture and pathogen is not related to infection at another site, or (2) one of …

Implementation Of Order Sets For Opioid Alternatives In Community Hospital Emergency Departments., Jared Netley Pharmd, Mpa, Bcps, Bcccp, William Armstrong Pharmd, Bcps, Sarah Meeks Pharmd Jul 2020

Implementation Of Order Sets For Opioid Alternatives In Community Hospital Emergency Departments., Jared Netley Pharmd, Mpa, Bcps, Bcccp, William Armstrong Pharmd, Bcps, Sarah Meeks Pharmd

Parkview Pharmacy Department

PURPOSE: The design and implementation of alternatives to opioids (ALTO) order sets for the treatment of acute pain in a community health system's emergency departments are described.

SUMMARY: Healthcare institutions nationwide have incorporated policies and procedures to assist prescribers in the safe and effective management of pain. These adopted approaches may be targeted at mitigating opioid prescribing as well as promoting the optimization of nonopioid analgesics. Institutions that enact innovations and track outcomes may be eligible for reimbursement through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Merit-based Incentive Payment System. Emergency departments may monitor implementation progress and outcomes through participation …

The Role Of Parent Self-Regulation In Youth Type 1 Diabetes Management., Katherine W Bauer, Marisa E Hilliard, Dana K. Albright Phd, Sharon L Lo, Emily M. Fredericks, Alison L Miller Jul 2020

The Role Of Parent Self-Regulation In Youth Type 1 Diabetes Management., Katherine W Bauer, Marisa E Hilliard, Dana K. Albright Phd, Sharon L Lo, Emily M. Fredericks, Alison L Miller

Health Services and Informatics Research

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Youth with strong self-regulation (SR), or the ability to manage thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, engage in more effective type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. However, while parent support and engagement are critical to ensuring positive youth T1D outcomes, it is rarely considered that parents' SR may also influence youth T1D management. If this is the case, novel interventions to improve parents' SR or ensure adequate support for parents with SR challenges offer great potential to improve family functioning and youth T1D management.

RECENT FINDINGS: Theoretical and preliminary empirical evidence suggests that parental SR impacts family processes that support …

Health Services and Informatics Research

BACKGROUND: Self-regulation (SR), or the capacity to control one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in order to achieve a desired goal, shapes health outcomes through many pathways, including supporting adherence to medical treatment regimens. Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is one specific condition that requires SR to ensure adherence to daily treatment regimens that can be arduous and effortful (e.g., monitoring blood glucose). Adolescents, in particular, have poor adherence to T1D treatment regimens, yet it is essential that they assume increased responsibility for managing their T1D as they approach young adulthood. Adolescence is also a time of rapid changes in SR capacity …
