Eliminating Silos: Developing System Design For Information Sharing In Violence Prevention, Jacqueline Kulaga
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
The 21st century has brought about changing social perspectives on victimization and offender accountability related to sexual violence. States across the United States have established, and continue to develop, legislation and protocols to address such violence. While there has been a great shift in combating this form of violence, it is essential to create structures to enhance services for victims as well as create recommendations for those who work to hold offenders of these violent crimes accountable. This dissertation was conducted using a qualitative content analysis (QCA) of documents from the Palm Beach County Sexual Assault Response Team (PBC SART), …
An Analysis Of The Effects Of Trauma On Foster Youth Aging Out Of The Florida Foster Care System: Implications For Supportive Interventions And Practices, Kesia Vazquez
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
In the U.S. there are approximately 25,000 youth that leave the Child Welfare System without a stable long-term housing arrangement and are left to age out of foster care and transition into adulthood (Dion, Dworsky, Kauff, & Kleinman, 2014, p. iii). These foster youth alumni (FYA) travel through various paths yet share many traumatic events that cause long-term effects that influence coping skills. This qualitative and phenomenological study aims to investigate the various traumas experienced, before and during foster care, and the coping skills that FYA have developed. A total of 16 FYA, from the Florida Child Welfare System, were …

Is A Theory Of The Problem Sufficient For A Theory Of The Solution? Negotiating Tensions Among Research, Practice, Advocacy And Activism In Serving Immigrant Communities, Diana Formoso, Dina Birman, Edison Trickett, Dana Rusch, Ashmeet Oberoi
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
The lives of members of immigrant communities are inevitably shaped by U.S. laws, rapidly-shifting immigration policy, institutional policies and practices (e.g., in schools), and how immigrants are welcomed (or not) by members of host communities (Portes & Rumbaut, 2001). These and other aspects of the context of reception have important implications for immigrant integration, education and employment, and mental health. Accordingly, there have been significant calls for psychologists to take active roles in advocacy and activism, which resonates deeply with many of us. Roundtable organizers are community psychologists working with immigrant communities and seeking to negotiate the tensions that can …

Community Stakeholder Perspectives Around The Strengths And Needs Of Unaccompanied Immigrant Minors, Diana Formoso, Lourdes Suarez-Morales, Carolina Barbeito, Veronica Lynne Grosse, Adriana Wilson
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
Unaccompanied immigrant minors (UIM) are youth who lack lawful immigration status and who are without a parent or guardian in the U.S. who can provide custody and care. By all accounts, UIM experience stressful and traumatic circumstances before, during and postmigration. Most UIM left their home countries due to economic stagnation, poverty, crime and gang-related violence (Kandel et al., 2014); almost half described fleeing societal violence and one in five described experiencing domestic abuse (UNHCR, 2014). During migration, UIM are vulnerable to human trafficking, kidnapping, and other abuses (Kandel et al., 2014). Upon resettlement, UIM sometimes experience extended stays in …

Exploring Counselors’ Personal Guiding Theories: A Qualitative Study In Portraiture, Amy L. Barth, Jane E. Rheineck, Carrie Merino Dr.
The Qualitative Report
A personal guiding theory of counseling is an important component of professional identity development for counselors. We utilized the qualitative methodology of portraiture to explore how professional counselors understand their own personal guiding theories of counseling. Three research portraits are shared that demonstrate how participants use the counseling relationship as the means to incorporate their personal guiding theories into their work with clients. Implications for counselors and counselor educators and future research are presented.
Changes In Self-Concept And Substance-Related Cognitions During Short-Term Residential Substance Use Treatment, Olivia Grace Larson
Changes In Self-Concept And Substance-Related Cognitions During Short-Term Residential Substance Use Treatment, Olivia Grace Larson
Theses and Dissertations
The United States is in the midst of an opioid crisis, with more than 130 people dying each day from an opioid overdose (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018a). Given the recent spike in overdose deaths associated with highly potent synthetic opioids (i.e., fentanyl), there are few signs of the crisis abating (CDC, 2018a). Compared to other age groups, the prevalence of both heroin and prescription opioid use is particularly elevated among young adults (Sharma, Bruner, Barnett, & Fishman, 2016). While there is a large body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of substance use treatment in general, only …
Knock Knock! Who’S There? Exploring The Functions Of Play And Humor During Bowen Family Systems Theory Training, Helen Reynolds
Knock Knock! Who’S There? Exploring The Functions Of Play And Humor During Bowen Family Systems Theory Training, Helen Reynolds
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Emerging research into the evolution of play indicates that complex social play may serve important functions in anxiety management and the development of emotional calibration. Bowen family systems theory posits that the behavior of all living things is organized by underlying emotional circuitry, and that each living system is characterized by its capacity to self regulate in relation to the reactivity of the emotional network within which it is embedded. The clinical supervisory system is often at the nexus of multiple anxious systems and its members must find ways to manage this anxious emotional field. This study used interpretative phenomenological …

On The Same Page: A Formal Process For Training Multiple Interviewers, Carolyn Sattin-Bajaj
The Qualitative Report
The increased utilization of qualitative methodologies as part of mixed-method health and social science research has highlighted the need for training procedures for every stage of qualitative data collection and analysis. Yet, few group training models exist for collecting reliable, valid qualitative interview data. This article presents a multi-stage, collaborative interview training process for a large team of research assistants. The training program combines insights and techniques used in both structured and semi-structured interviewing. It also includes ongoing instruction and feedback prior to and during data collection in an effort to ensure consistency and reliability. In the article, I describe …

Barriers To School-Based Parent Involvement While Living In Public Housing: A Mother’S Perspective, Stephanie Lechuga-Peña, Daniel Brisson
The Qualitative Report
Parent involvement is associated with child academic outcomes, positive behaviors, and social skills. This qualitative study explored school-based parent involvement barriers experienced by nine low-income mothers. In-depth interviews were used to collect data from mothers participating in a community-based program offered in a large public housing neighborhood. Findings included three main barriers: (a) cultural and language differences in their children’s school, (b) undertones of racism from teachers and parents, and (c) being the primary caregiver or sole provider for their children. Although all parents experience challenges to school involvement, low-income mothers face additional obstacles preventing them from engaging in their …

Friends Or Strangers? A Feasibility Study Of An Innovative Focus Group Methodology, Chandria D. Jones, Jocelyn Newsome, Kerry Levin, Amanda Wilmot, Jennifer Anderson Mcnulty, Teresa Kline
The Qualitative Report
Focus groups are useful tools for examining perceptions, feelings, and suggestions about topics, products, or issues. Typically, focus groups are held in formal facilities with “strangers” or participants who do not know each other. Recent work suggests that “friendship groups” may provide an innovative alternative for collecting group-level qualitative data. This approach involves recruiting a single “source participant” who hosts a group in his/her home and recruits friends possessing the characteristics desired for the study. In order to examine the feasibility of friendship groups as a defensible research methodology, we conducted a series of four friendship groups as a feasibility …

A Study Of A High School Intervention Program To Increase Access To Higher Education, Erin Nicole Davis
A Study Of A High School Intervention Program To Increase Access To Higher Education, Erin Nicole Davis
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation was designed to determine the effectiveness of a college access program created to improve college application and acceptance rates for underserved students. The program is targeted toward low-income, first-generation students, many of whom are minorities and reside in a rural area. The schools that the students attended have school counselors, but due to limited resources and other challenges, students often did not receive significant information about access to higher education. Since many students were the first in their family to attend college, they relied on information from the school to help them navigate the process.
This study …

Engaging Young Fathers In Research Through Photo-Interviewing, Nicolette Sopcak, Maria Mayan, Berna J. Skrypnek
Engaging Young Fathers In Research Through Photo-Interviewing, Nicolette Sopcak, Maria Mayan, Berna J. Skrypnek
The Qualitative Report
Although conducting interviews is the most popular research strategy in qualitative research, we question whether it is the best strategy to use with young fathers and other populations who may be less willing to share personal experiences and thoughts with an unknown researcher. The reluctance of young fathers to engage in research leads to the omission of important perspectives and inadvertently results in young fathers' being understudied and unwittingly excluded from support programming and services. In this paper, we describe our experiences of using two different research strategies with young fathers: conventional in-depth interviews (i.e., interviews that rely on words …

Youth With Disabilities Talk About Spirituality:A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Patricia J. Baldwin, Jan Evans, Nicole Etherington, Megan Nichols, Virginia Wright, Janette Mcdougall
The Qualitative Report
There is little known about what spirituality means for youth with disability or about the potential relevance of youths’ spirituality in pediatric rehabilitation. This study explored perceptions of spirituality for youth with disabilities. Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, we examined the lived experiences of eighteen youth ages 11-20 years with disabilities including cerebral palsy, central nervous system disorder or autism spectrum disorder. In individual interviews, followed by a focus group, youth identified key spiritual themes – the importance of their beliefs, personal sources of comfort and strength, finding purpose in helping others, significance of personal connections, and strengths-based perspectives on …
Effects Of Foster Care Placements On The Mental Health Of Abused Children In Florida, Sarah M. Nelson
Effects Of Foster Care Placements On The Mental Health Of Abused Children In Florida, Sarah M. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: As evidenced in the literature, when maltreated children are admitted into state care, they are frequently not afforded sufficient mental health treatment. Concomitantly, foster parents are often not given proper training in providing complex care for these children. As such, the current study aimed to examine the role that foster care has in the development of psychopathology in maltreated children and their caregivers. METHODS: Participants included 234 maltreated youths (ages 7 to 17) presenting for treatment at a community mental health center specializing in childhood trauma. Children and adolescents currently residing in foster care as well as in their …
