Using Environmental Dna (Edna) As A Tool To Detect Sharks And Rays Along The Coast Of Quintana Roo, Mexico, Sara T. Norment Aug 2026

Using Environmental Dna (Edna) As A Tool To Detect Sharks And Rays Along The Coast Of Quintana Roo, Mexico, Sara T. Norment

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Elasmobranchs play a critical ecological role in marine environments, yet many populations worldwide remain poorly known and monitored. This is particularly true in Mexico despite its high biodiversity and ongoing fishing pressures. Traditional monitoring methods, such as commercial fisheries and fishery-independent surveys using longlines or nets, are often limited, leaving important knowledge gaps. Previous studies have shown that environmental DNA (eDNA), small traces of DNA left behind in the water column from feces, skin, or mucus, is a transformative, non-invasive tool for detecting elasmobranch presence and diversity across marine ecosystems.

This project used eDNA metabarcoding to detect and identify elasmobranch …

Edna Surveys For The Critically Endangered Caribbean Staghorn Coral, Acropora Cervicornis (Lamarck, 1816), Pari Elaine Cribbins

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Historically, Acropora cervicornis was a dominant coral on Caribbean reef systems, but an outbreak of white band disease in the late 1970s marked the beginning of devastating, multi-decadal population declines that led to the coral being listed as “critically endangered” on the IUCN Red List in 2022. Today, after a record-setting marine heat wave in 2023 triggered a mass bleaching event on Florida’s Coral Reef (FCR), A. cervicornis is considered functionally extinct on the FCR. While individuals of A. cervicornis do remain on the FCR, the small population size of the coral makes in situ surveys difficult. However, surveys using …

Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias Jul 2025

Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are a diverse, globally spread and yet poorly studied group of benthic organisms. They act as settlement cues for coral larvae, but this interaction is often species-specific, as CCA species can be either inducers or inhibitors to larval settlement and metamorphosis. Despite this importance, information on Caribbean CCA distribution, diversity, and impact on coral species is limited due to the difficulty in identifying them. In the present study, CCA samples were collected from seven different reef sites in the southeastern region of Florida’s Coral Reef and genetically identified using molecular analyses. Some of the samples collected …

Estimating The Carbon Flux Of Argyropelecus Aculeatus Within The Gulf Of Mexico, Sidney R. Trimble Dec 2024

Estimating The Carbon Flux Of Argyropelecus Aculeatus Within The Gulf Of Mexico, Sidney R. Trimble

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Anthropogenic impacts have led to increased levels of anthropogenic carbon within the atmosphere and the world’s oceans. The Biological Carbon Pump (BCP) plays a key role in reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and oceans by aiding in the export and sequestration of anthropogenic carbon. This occurs when carbon exchange between the atmosphere and the upper ocean takes place, and the carbon is then transferred down into the deep sea. Mesopelagic fishes may aid in this process of carbon transfer. Though the role of mesopelagic fishes is understudied in our world’s oceans, there are previous studies that focus …

Trophic Ecology Of Black Swallowers (Scombriformes: Chiasmodontidae: Chiasmodon) In The Deep-Pelagic Gulf Of Mexico, Travis J. Kirk Apr 2024

Trophic Ecology Of Black Swallowers (Scombriformes: Chiasmodontidae: Chiasmodon) In The Deep-Pelagic Gulf Of Mexico, Travis J. Kirk

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The ecology of deep-pelagic predatory fishes remains poorly understood despite their importance as ecosystem regulators and energy transfer vectors. This study investigated the trophic ecology of three species of the predatory fish genus Chiasmodon (“black swallowers”) in the Gulf of Mexico, a region that serves as an analog for the global low-latitude deep pelagial, the world’s largest cumulative ecosystem. Foraging habits (e.g., selectivity, chronology, daily ration) of an “advanced” evolutionary fish in a system that is otherwise dominated by basal fish taxa, were quantitatively estimated via high-resolution stomach content analysis. A quantitative dataset of both predator and prey abundance, the …

The Endoparasite Fauna Of Mesopredatory Mesopelagic Teleosts, Alexander U. Rayburn Dec 2023

The Endoparasite Fauna Of Mesopredatory Mesopelagic Teleosts, Alexander U. Rayburn

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The ecology of the mesopelagic zone is an understudied area of the open ocean, with few diet studies even for dominant fish species. Since endoparasites are generally transmitted trophically, descriptions of the parasite communities within fishes can often provide additional insights on food web interactions. This project assesses the endoparasite faunal community of mesopredatory mesopelagic teleosts to better understand mesopelagic food webs in the South Atlantic Bight. Fishes in the Families Alepisauridae (lancetfishes), Gempylidae (snake mackerels), Bramidae (pomfrets), and Scombrolabracidae (longfin escolar) are frequent bycatch in the pelagic longline fishery targeting swordfish Xiphias gladius and thunnid tunas, yet the ecology …

HPD Articles

Although widespread, the burden of disease presented by chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not equally distributed among all demographics. Examining the social determinants of health (SDOH) that relate to barriers to renal dialysis care in CKD can help to prevent future disparities. There has not been a study addressing the social factors that create barriers to care for ethnic minority patients with CKD. The aim of this scoping review is to address the SDOH that affects access to renal dialysis for ethnic minority patients in the United States. This study was based on the protocol published by the Joanna Briggs …

The Effect Of Water Flow Rates On The Survival And Growth Rates Of Three Caribbean Bouldering Coral Species Juveniles In An Indoor Versus Outdoor Environment, Ian Michael Johnson Aug 2023

The Effect Of Water Flow Rates On The Survival And Growth Rates Of Three Caribbean Bouldering Coral Species Juveniles In An Indoor Versus Outdoor Environment, Ian Michael Johnson

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Coral reefs are vital ecosystems for the world’s oceans and humanity; however, they are threatened by climate change, disease, and local anthropogenic stressors, and need assistance to recover. Traditional reef restoration efforts (fragmentation and outplanting are helping but are limited in effectiveness by not increasing genetic diversity. Ex situ sexual propagation for corals provides new, genetically different coral recruits. However, this process is laborious, expensive and time consuming, especially at the scale required to effectively contribute to the widespread recovery. To lower costs, two key parameters that require optimization to hasten the growth of coral recruits are water flow and …

Trait-based approaches that complement taxonomy-based studies have increased in popularity among the scientific community over the last decades. The collection of biological and ecological characteristics of species (i.e., traits) provides insight into species and ecosystem vulnerability to environmental and anthropogenic changes, as well as ecosystem functioning. Here, we present the FUN Azores trait database, describe our approach, evaluate its scope, compare it to other marine trait databases, and explore the spatial distribution of its traits with “functional maps.” While most of the available trait databases to date contain essential information to understand the functional diversity of a taxonomic or functional …

Ecomorphology Of A Predatory Deep-Sea Fish Family: Does Trophic Specialization Drive Hyperspeciation?, Ryan P. Mcgonagle, David Kerstetter, Danté Fenolio, Tracey Sutton May 2023

Ecomorphology Of A Predatory Deep-Sea Fish Family: Does Trophic Specialization Drive Hyperspeciation?, Ryan P. Mcgonagle, David Kerstetter, Danté Fenolio, Tracey Sutton

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Two of the main drivers of speciation among aquatic vertebrates are physical isolation (e.g., lakes and streams) and micro-niche availability (e.g., tropical reefs). In both regards, the mesopelagic domain of the open ocean, Earth’s second largest cumulative ecosystem (behind only the bathypelagic domain), would seem retardant. Ocean circulation makes isolation rare on both contemporary and geological time/space scales, and the lack of substrate precludes stable micro-niches. Paradoxically, some pelagic taxa demonstrate much higher-than-expected species richness on regional scales. A prime example is the dragonfish family Stomiidae, the most speciose family of mesopelagic fishes, owing largely to the subfamily Melanostomiinae (scaleless …

An Ecological Assessment Of The Deep-Pelagic Fish Genus Cyclothone (Gonostomatidae; Stomiiformes), Possibly The World’S Most Abundant Fishes, In The Gulf Of Mexico, Olivia C. North-Menthonnex Apr 2023

An Ecological Assessment Of The Deep-Pelagic Fish Genus Cyclothone (Gonostomatidae; Stomiiformes), Possibly The World’S Most Abundant Fishes, In The Gulf Of Mexico, Olivia C. North-Menthonnex

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The fish genus Cyclothone is considered the most abundant vertebrate taxon on Earth. Despite this assertion, very few detailed ecological studies of this genus exist for any site in the World Ocean, largely due to the lack of expertise (and willingness) to identify specimens from existing sample sets. This study will provide a species-level description of the abundance, vertical distribution, and size structuring of the genus Cyclothone in the Gulf of Mexico, a hyper-diverse, deep-pelagic ecosystem that is increasingly impacted by anthropogenic disturbances. As the putative most-abundant fishes in the ecosystem, this characterization is critically needed for a holistic understanding …

Accommodations Needed For Asd Patients During Dental Care, Krystal Eischen Olsen

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This project aimed to investigate caregiver perspective regarding dental provider care for visits for their child[ren] with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a developmental disorder that affects communication, sensory processing, and behavior. ASD can cause problems regarding oral health care and treatments due to the overwhelming sensations experienced by the patient, resulting in refusal behaviors regarding prevention, maintenance, diagnosis, and treatment of oral health care needs (Zhou et al., 2020). Dental providers aren’t extensively trained on treatment or support techniques recommended for this population, leading to a drop-off in patient care and a lack of caregiver training or support …

A Review Of Healthcare-Related Decisions Faced By Women At Risk For Hereditary Breast Cancer, Rathika Manikandan, Ilan Nedjar

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Hereditary breast cancer is defined as cancer that results from pathogenic mutations that are generationally inherited. In the U.S., hereditary cancer accounts for 5-10% of all cancer cases. Furthermore, approximately 264,000 newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are linked to pathogenic mutations. Pathogenic mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, and other genes are linked to a higher lifetime risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer; women with these pathogenic mutations have lifetime risk of breast cancer up to 85% and lifetime risk of ovarian cancer up to 54% . Previvors are defined as individuals with an identified pathogenic mutation prior to a …

A Simple Method To Assess Porphyrin Basicity Using Competition Studies, Pranav Madadi, Ofek Gur, Ayush Desai Apr 2023

A Simple Method To Assess Porphyrin Basicity Using Competition Studies, Pranav Madadi, Ofek Gur, Ayush Desai

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Competition studies of three freebase porphyrins (H2OEP, H2OETPP, and H2TPP) were carried to assess their basicities. These porphyrins were selected because they are a good representation of natural occurring ones. In each experiment, the resultant UV-vis spectra were obtained by mixing and analyzing two porphyrins in a double-sided cuvette in which one was protonated using either trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) or hydrochloric acid (HCl) while the other was kept as a freebase. After mixing, the two porphyrins “compete” available protons, thus the most basic of them will acquire most of the protons. By adjusting the ratios of dications and freebases we …

A Search For A Solution To Antibiotic-Resistance: Uncovering Phage From Soil Samples That Bind To A Type Iii Secretion System Of Yersinia Pestis, Shruti Patel, Ritika Vonguru, Kenya Reid, Jewel Mousa, Megha Kurian

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has recently become a major global health concern, requiring new methods to successfully combat these highly resistant microbes. One promising alternative to traditional antibiotics is phage therapy, where bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) are utilized to target and kill bacteria. This study primarily focuses on discovering phages that are effective against Yersinia pestis (Y. pestis), the bacteria responsible for bubonic and pneumonic plague. One distinctive aspect of Y. pestis is its utilization of a type III secretion system (T3SS), a needle-like structure used to inject host cells with toxins that lead to infection. …

Acute Toxicity Study Of Novel Melanoma Actives In Mice, Trisha Seal, Samaya Danthurthy Apr 2023

Acute Toxicity Study Of Novel Melanoma Actives In Mice, Trisha Seal, Samaya Danthurthy

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Although there have been promising advances in melanoma drug discovery, the average overall survival of patients with late-stage metastatic melanoma is approximately 3 years, which suggests a need for identifying new melanoma targets. We previously reported a discovery of melanoma actives acting via binding and down regulating human nuclear ribonuclear protein H1/H2 (hnRNP H1/H2), which is a novel target with unknown toxicity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to study the safety of novel anti-melanoma compounds 2155-14 and 2155-18 in mice. The methodology of the study involved injecting male and female Balb/C mice three times a week for three …

Are Students In Broward County, Fl, Who Get Less Sleep More Likely To Experience Depressive Symptoms?, Kelly Nyman, Alissa Lopez, Lauren Herrera

Undergraduate Student Symposium

It is commonly known that sleep can significantly affect overall health in both physical and mental states, but can getting less sleep be an attributing factor to high school students experiencing symptoms of depression? In this study, we will determine whether less sleep is associated with feelings of sadness or hopelessness which are common symptoms of depression. Finding a link between the two could allow us to implement sleep education programs that would lower rates of depression in high school students. Using data collected from the 2019 YRBSS from Broward County, Florida, data was run comparing high school students who …

Assessment Of Brain Function And Putting Performance Of Collegiate Golfers, Marissa Bonsangue

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a noninvasive method for assessing brain activity. Significant correlation has been indicated between performance outcome and brain wave measures. During a putting sequence, a golfer requires significant focus to successfully perform the skill, therefore certain brain wave frequencies are more apparent. Male and female golfers (n = 11) from a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Program were asked to complete 10 putts at 5 varied hole distances (total- 50 putts) on an outdoor putting surface. EEG was recorded in 4-second epochs and assessed to the extent of power spectral density (PSD). Each epoch was classified …

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects a multitude of races and ethnicities as its impact varies from person to person. ASD is typically diagnosed around the age of two to three years old since signs and symptoms of Autism become clinically apparent at that time. Increased reporting of Autism in local communities has surged from diagnostic tools and criteria. However, even with these advancements, the African American community suffers a delayed diagnosis of ASD. This issue poses problems for both the parents and children with Autism and has broader implications for the South Florida community; opportunities are limited for developmental services …

Behavioral Responses Of Aplysia Californica To Three Amino Acids, Adrian Ditore Apr 2023

Behavioral Responses Of Aplysia Californica To Three Amino Acids, Adrian Ditore

Undergraduate Student Symposium

For the sea slug Aplysia californica, chemical detection allows the location of food, avoidance of predators, and ability to encounter potential mates. This is an important sensory modality because other sensory structures (optical and acoustic) are limited. It is hypothesized that food is detected via concentration gradients of specific food-derived amino acids in the water column. This study examines the behavioral reactions of Aplysia to L-alanine, L-serine, and L-methionine at a concentration of 20 mM in contrast to a food stimulus. Test subjects were placed in an aquarium and 50 mL of the amino acid was added near the …

Biopiracy: The Exploitation Of Medicinal Plants From Countries And Communities, James Murray Apr 2023

Biopiracy: The Exploitation Of Medicinal Plants From Countries And Communities, James Murray

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Biopiracy is the appropriation of knowledge and biological resources of medicinal plants from indigenous communities. In addition, researchers and organizations secure patents over medicinal plants resulting in a monopoly over the use of them. This has caused local communities where the plant originated from to be excluded from proper financial compensation. Many people are unaware of what biopiracy is and how it may negatively impact communities. The goal of this project is to raise awareness about biopiracy and its harmful effects on indigenous communities. I will discuss two plant species widely known for their medicinal capabilities in the local communities …
