Research-Based Early Literacy Interventions Or Teacher-Created Early Literacy, Sonja Carson

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research project was to determine if research-based early literacy interventions are more effective than teacher-created early literacy interventions with special education students on letter identification and letter sound recognition. Before the interventions began the students were given the Foundational Skills Survey in Letter Identification and Letter Sound Recognition by Really Great Reading. This score was the baseline for the reported data. For eight weeks the researcher instructed the students using a research-based reading intervention from Really Great Reading's Countdown focused on letter identification and letter sound recognition. This was done in addition to the general …

Well-Managed School Improvement Plan, Michelle Brummer

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Teaching students social-emotional skills positively impacts the learning environment in a classroom. This school improvement plan establishes a school wide outline for the training and implementation of social-emotional instruction through Boys Town's Well-Managed Schools curriculum. The plan addresses the need for social-emotional intervention supports and resources for classroom teachers. A review of literature was conducted to support the plan and examines how student behaviors impact classroom learning, recognizes the importance of explicit social-emotional instruction, and delves into how social-emotional interventions improve the classroom learning environment.

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this literature review is to examine what quantifies an elite STEM program, what criteria makes STEM education impactful for students, and where the future of STEM education may lie. Integrated STEM is a key aspect of STEM education. STEM perceptions and understandings must be clarified in order to move forward with STEM reform attempts. Learning by doing, using real-world contexts, is vital to the success of integrated STEM education. Successful STEM learning environments must also focus on student engagement and motivation, as well as the incorporation of social-emotional and 21st century skills. Social-Emotional Learning & Academic Achievement, Breanna Kroese Oct 2020

Social-Emotional Learning & Academic Achievement, Breanna Kroese

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This action research study investigated the impact that social-emotional skills had on academic growth during the first 8 weeks of the 2020-2021 school year for a class of first grade students. Academic growth was evaluated by the students math gains measured by the STAR math assessment. The SAEBRS teacher assessment was used to measure the students social-emotional skills, specifically social, emotional, and academic behavior. The data did not indicate statistical significance, however, there is literature that suggests the importance of teaching social-emotional skills to young children to improve their social, emotional, and academic behavior and support their education and life.

For six weeks, the researcher implemented culturally responsive teaching strategies in a virtual first-grade classroom. The participants included fourteen six- and seven-year-olds who attended public school in Northern Virginia. The instruction was completed in a virtual setting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the start and conclusion of the study, students were given a survey to measure the class climate. Student engagement was observed daily and documented on a weekly observation tally sheet. The study found that implementing culturally responsive teaching in the …

The Importance Of Teaching And Learning Patterning In Early Math Education, Jan M. Hessman Oct 2020

The Importance Of Teaching And Learning Patterning In Early Math Education, Jan M. Hessman

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review explores the importance of patterning in early math education. Patterning skills are a unique predictor of future success in mathematics. With the Common Core not addressing patterning as a standard in early math education, many educators have come to believe that the importance of patterning is not significant. However, past and present research studies have yielded convincing results that demonstrate the importance of including patterning in early math curriculums. Incorporating patterning into young students' math experiences requires several specific instructional strategies to optimize the benefits of learning patterning skills.

The results provide promising, albeit not conclusive, findings in …

Implementing 21st Century Learning And Innovation Skills In Classrooms, Amber Soderlund Oct 2020

Implementing 21st Century Learning And Innovation Skills In Classrooms, Amber Soderlund

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review depicts strategies educators can implement to facilitate 21st century learning and innovation skills in classrooms: collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. One challenge educators currently face with implementing these skills in the classroom is being required to move to online learning or other learning formats as safety and health remain a top priority during the pandemic. This has caused teachers to reinvent the way they teach their students to communicate, work with one another, and display critical thinking and creativity skills. Many educators are reinventing teaching in schools without an increase in resources and guidance from the …

The Impact Of Social Media On Adolescent Mental Health, Nicole J. Critchfield

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The number of adolescents reporting mental health issues such as anxiety and depression has dramatically increased in the last two decades. As this trend coincides with the increase in social media use by adolescents, many researchers have studied the correlation between the two. This literature review examines the correlation along with the pros and cons of adolescent social media use outside and inside the classroom. Most recently, research is showing how social media is used impacts the state of an adolescent’s mental health rather than the use of social media in general. Teachers and schools can help students learn how …

Data-Driven Decision Making: Improving Student Achievement, Mallory Denny Jul 2020

Data-Driven Decision Making: Improving Student Achievement, Mallory Denny

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The overall purpose of this literature review was to explore what it truly means to be a data-driven school. While researching, three common themes were identified. First, there is a lack of training for professionals in education in the area of data-driven decision making. This makes it difficult for teachers to successfully use data to alter instruction in a manner that would increase student achievement. Second, in order for schools to successfully implement data-driven decision making it must be a school-wide effort with every stakeholder involved in the process. This means from the top administrator down to the teachers, everyone …

The Impact Of Game-Based Learning In A Special Education Classroom, Mckenzi James Jul 2020

The Impact Of Game-Based Learning In A Special Education Classroom, Mckenzi James

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Every school has at least one student who has a learning disability or struggles with academics. Every school also has teachers with the ability to reach out to struggling students, using traditional and nontraditional approach to learning. Game-based learning is a nontraditional approach which introduces students to game-based learning instead of more traditional paper and pencil activities. Multiple researchers have found game-based learning raised test scores, allowed for hands on social skill lessons, and has helped generate a positive environment for students. A few researchers shared the negative impacts of game-based learning, including the lack of transferability of skills for …

Student Motivation And Homework Completion, Macey Oden

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review explores the interaction between student motivation and homework completion. Studies show that motivation is key to academic success. In order for a student to be motivated, they must have a positive learning environment that promotes self-confidence, choice, and relationships. Studies also show that homework is important to academic achievement. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are most effective when combined to increase homework completion and academic performance. Punishment can negatively affect student attitudes, hinder their motivation, and decrease their self-confidence. This research synthesizes the literature on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, consequences, and punishment, to discern the best ways to …
