Community Resilience In The Absence Of Aid: Recovery After The 2018 Father’S Day Flood In Houghton County, Michigan, Abby Heggem
Community Resilience In The Absence Of Aid: Recovery After The 2018 Father’S Day Flood In Houghton County, Michigan, Abby Heggem
University Honors Program Senior Projects
Community networks influenced resilience and recovery after the 2018 Father’s Day Flood in Houghton County Michigan, particularly in the absence of strong institutional support. The flood caused widespread damage to homes, roads, and infrastructure, forcing residents to rely on immediate local action before state or federal aid arrived. Rural locations like Houghton County are often neglected by government funding and support during disasters and are forced to rely on themselves. Community networks matter in disasters because neighbors, volunteer groups, and local leaders respond faster than formal institutions. This project uses a qualitative case study approach that includes content analysis of …

The Effect Of Algal Wastewater Treatment Systems On Microbial Communities, Alexis Leach
The Effect Of Algal Wastewater Treatment Systems On Microbial Communities, Alexis Leach
University Honors Program Senior Projects
In collaboration with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and Gross-Wen Technologies, I examined the microbial communities in experimental tertiary wastewater treatment systems employing algal phytoremediation. Three algal phytoremediation systems were examined: two vertical conveyor belt systems, known as the 10-foot belt system and the series 4 system, and a third system lacking a converter belt in which planktonic algae grew in a control pond. I used EcoPlates to measure carbon substrate utilization by microorganisms in each system. EcoPlates contain thirty-one different carbon substrates, with a dye that indicates microbial use of each substrate. I conducted a Principal …

Sex-Related Differences In Aging Rate Are Associated With Sex Chromosome System In Amphibians, Hugo Cayuela, Beth Reinke, 48 Other Co-Authors
Biology Faculty Publications
Sex-related differences in mortality are widespread in the animal kingdom. Although studies have shown that sex determination systems might drive lifespan evolution, sex chromosome influence on aging rates have not been investigated so far, likely due to an apparent lack of demographic data from clades including both XY (with heterogametic males) and ZW (heterogametic females) systems. Taking advantage of a unique collection of capture–recapture datasets in amphibians, a vertebrate group where XY and ZW systems have repeatedly evolved over the past 200 million years, we examined whether sex heterogamy can predict sex differences in aging rates and lifespans. We showed …

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
Many aspects of organismal behavior and metabolism are modulated by biological clocks that oscillate with 24-hour (circadian) rhythms. These circadian clocks synchronize to environmental cues, such as cycles of light and dark, and allow organisms to anticipate changing environmental conditions and make use of temporal niches. The circadian clocks’ function, as well as the biological processes they modulate, can be altered by excess artificial lighting (photopollution). Photopollution levels in Chicago are some of the highest in the world, making it an ideal location to investigate the ecological and health impacts of nighttime light. While photopollution’s effects on specific species (e.g. …

Geographers study place and location and these are critical to the success of an institution like ours with a (mainly) commuting student body. Our employees also often travel long distances to campus, and our 80,000 alumni are dispersed around the world but mainly still reside in the Chicago region. Many classes use the City and surrounding areas for field trips, internships and more. Our satellite campuses – El Centro, CCICS, Lake County College – add an additional dimension to our spatial challenges and opportunities. Underlying all this is a mosaic of neighborhoods, distinct socioeconomic and demographic areas, dense transportation infrastructure, …
Decolonizing The Barrio: The Spatial Politics Of Culture In Chicago’S Paseo Boricua, Dennis Grammenos
Decolonizing The Barrio: The Spatial Politics Of Culture In Chicago’S Paseo Boricua, Dennis Grammenos
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium
In the current neoliberal climate that has stoked an intense intercity competition for internationally footloose capital, many cities with global aspirations are encouraging urban redevelopment projects that brand and promote heterogeneous cultural enclaves as destinations for leisure and tourism consumption. Oftentimes, such enclaves emerge as "ethnoscapes" that ostensibly express the cultural identity of its residents, usually immigrant populations. In Chicago, municipal policies aimed at enhancing a visitor economy have been instrumental in the creation of the Paseo Boricua, a Puerto Rican "ethnoscape". This study examines the intersection of Chicago's urban redevelopment policies and the spatial politics of culture that unfold …
