Diffusion In Wide Grain Boundaries, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig
Diffusion In Wide Grain Boundaries, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The rigorous solution of the grain-boundary diffusion problem has been approximated by a series expansion method. The calculations show that higher-order terms may be neglected in the bulk adjacent to the grain boundary. Thus, in this region Whipple's and Suzuoka's solutions represent a close approximation to the problem. Inside the grain boundary, however, higher-order approximations have to be taken into account. These approximations gain importance in the case of wide grain boundaries. The solutions obtained for an instantaneous source have been fitted to available grain-boundary diffusion data of Ni2+ in MgO at 1200°C. Numerical calculations give for the bulk diffusion …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the system CaO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 were studied at 1450° and 1550°C, over a range of pO2 from 1 to about 10-11 atm. Isothermal phase diagrams and activity-composition diagrams were constructed for 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt pct SiO2 sections. The data are applicable to further understanding the behavior of simple BOF steelmaking slags. © 1970 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society - ASM International - The Materials Information Society.

Doppler Shift In Frequency In The Transport Of Electromagnetic Waves Through An Underdense Plasma, Jerry Peacher, Kenneth M. Watson
Doppler Shift In Frequency In The Transport Of Electromagnetic Waves Through An Underdense Plasma, Jerry Peacher, Kenneth M. Watson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In an earlier publication, the validity of the radiation transport theory was studied for the calculation of multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves by a turbulent plasma. In the present paper, we extend the transport theory to include a description of the Doppler shift in frequency caused by electron motion.

The Fe-Ho Binary System, G. J. Roe, Thomas J. O'Keefe
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Fe-Ho phase diagram was determined on the basis of data obtained by X-ray diffraction, metallographic and differential thermal analysis techniques. Since emphasis was centered in the region where intermetallic compounds predominate, neither the iron nor holmium terminal regions were included in this study. Eutectic reactions were found to occur at 16.5 wt pct Fe and 875° C, 61 wt pct Fe and 1284° C, and 79 wt pct Fe and 1338° C. The congruent melting points of the compounds Ho6Fe23 and Ho2Fe17 were found to be 1332° and 1343° C, respectively. Two other intermetallic compounds were found, HoFe2 and …

A Simplification Heuristic For Large Flow Tables, R. J. Smith, James H. Tracey
A Simplification Heuristic For Large Flow Tables, R. J. Smith, James H. Tracey
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Flow tables specifying large asynchronous sequential circuits often contain more internal states than are required to specify desired circuit behavior. Known minimization techniques appear unsuited for reduction of such large (rows X columns > 250) flow tables, because of excessive computation and intermediate data requirements for problems of this size. The algorithm described here is intended to rapidly produce a simplified-but in general non-minimal-flow table. It is most economical when applied to extremely large tables and was devised primarily for automated design applications. The procedure has been programmed in PL/1 and has been incorporated into an asynchronous sequential circuit design automation …

Differential Cross Section For Charged A₁ Photoproduction Using The Regge Exchange Formalism, Keiji Kikkawa, Barbara N. Hale
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Regge-pole formalism is applied to the calculation of the differential cross section for A1+ photo-production in the region |tmin| < -t < 10µ2. The p, A1, A1-daughter, A2, and π trajectory contributions are considered, and use is made of chiral dynamics to estimate the unknown coupling constants. We find that the π and the A2 trajectories provide the dominant contributions.

An urban development project involving residential and school buildings as an extension of Madras city is described. The analysis of the project is made using the systems approach as a problem of human settlements. The methods adopted for efficient utilisation of space at optimal cost by functional planning, use of prefabricated units and use of new constructional procedures is described. The interrelationship between environmental, technical, social, cultural, psychological, economic, financial and management factors in making decisions for the project is discussed.
State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey
State Assignment Selection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary K. Maki, James H. Tracey
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Methods already exist for the construction of critical race-free assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits. Some of these methods permit the construction of many assignments for the same flow table. The algorithm presented here consists of two easy to apply tests which select that critical race-free assignment most likely to produce a set of simple next-state equations. The algorithm has been programmed. Copyright © 1970 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter
Baseband Agc In An Am-Fm Telemetry System, Richard S. Simpson, William H. Tranter
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The use of AGc loops at the input and output of the FM link in an AM-FM telemetry system allows the mean-square transmitter deviation to be maintained near maximum value, even though data may be nonstationary. However, errors result because of the inability of the receiver AGc loop to track perfectly gain variations in the transmitter loop. In this paper the general characteristics of AGc are discussed, and a theoretical analysis is performed to determine the time constant, steady-state error, and tracking error for a first-order loop. Also, tracking error for first order and second-order loops is investigated by simulation. …

Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Surface Damage In Oxide Passivated Silicon Planar Transistors, C. A. Goben
Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Surface Damage In Oxide Passivated Silicon Planar Transistors, C. A. Goben
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A dependence of surface degradation induced by ionizing radiation in matched oxide-passivated silicon planar epitaxial transistors on junction fringing electric field strength present during exposure is reported. The electric field strength and gamma dose dependence are investigated of the decrease in the forward current gain, hFE (as reflected by the increase in the surface recombination current component), the increase in the surface recombination velocity (as reflected by the increase in the reciprocal of the minority carrier lifetime), and the increase in junction capacitance. Empirical prediction equations have been derived, for matched devices, correlating the normalized base current increase and the …
