"You Are More Than Just Your Gift:" Facework And Idealization In Disney's Encanto, Janelle L.H. Gruber, Valerie Lynn Schrader Aug 2024

"You Are More Than Just Your Gift:" Facework And Idealization In Disney's Encanto, Janelle L.H. Gruber, Valerie Lynn Schrader

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

In this rhetorical analysis, we apply Goffman’s theory of facework to the Disney film Encanto, arguing that Encanto provides important lessons regarding facework and advocates for using facework in moderation. Encanto tells the story of the Madrigals, a family who experiences a miracle that results in each member of the family having a special gift – all except for one, the teenage protagonist, Mirabel. When Mirabel recognizes that both the miracle and her family are in danger, she realizes that her individual family members are using facework in order to fit in with the rest of the family and impress …

Teaching And Learning For Intercultural Competence In Pakistan Primary And Secondary Schools, Elizabeth J. Sandell, Malaika Azam Jul 2024

Teaching And Learning For Intercultural Competence In Pakistan Primary And Secondary Schools, Elizabeth J. Sandell, Malaika Azam

Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications

Pakistan has rich history and a vast range of people from different castes, speaking various languages, and celebrating diverse cultural backgrounds. Since independence in 1947, Pakistan has faced significant challenges, including a polarized society marked by ethnic tensions and conflicts. Intercultural competence is the ability to function effectively across cultures, to think and act appropriately, and to communicate and work with people from various cultural backgrounds. Consequently, schoolteachers should be knowledgeable about various ethnic groups, to teach in a multiethnic classroom, and to prepare all pupils for life in a multicultural society. Previous investigations by the other researchers suggested that …

2024-03: Addressing Mental Health Needs Of Mothers In Minnesota, Liz Fritz, Leah Nachreiner, Jaelynn Pinske, Mary Speer Mar 2024

2024-03: Addressing Mental Health Needs Of Mothers In Minnesota, Liz Fritz, Leah Nachreiner, Jaelynn Pinske, Mary Speer

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Maternal mental health refers to a range of conditions or illnesses that can occur anytime during pregnancy or the first year following pregnancy. When left untreated, maternal mental health conditions can have long-term negative impacts on the mother, baby, and family. Proper screenings for maternal mental health conditions are critical to ensuring that mental health concerns are detected and that new and expecting mothers receive the care they need. Requiring screening for maternal mental health conditions as part of prenatal and postpartum visits will lead to the care that new mothers deserve.

A Critical Phenomenological Study Of White Educators Who Engage In Antiracism, Maria-Renée D. Grigsby Jan 2024

A Critical Phenomenological Study Of White Educators Who Engage In Antiracism, Maria-Renée D. Grigsby

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Racism is reflected in political, economic, and educational institutions throughout the United States. These institutionalized systems were successfully designed to have a chilling effect on any progress toward antiracist change. It impacts the achievement level of K-12 students of color in the public school system who make up the majority population in public schools nationwide. Yet, their teachers remain largely white. This is especially important in Minnesota, which ranks fiftieth in the country for graduation rates of Black and Latinx students. The method used for this study is critical phenomenology which is important when looking at the influences of race, …

Changing Careers, Changing Identities: The Role Of Strong And Weak Ties On Career Change Decisions, Christopher S. Lienemann Jan 2024

Changing Careers, Changing Identities: The Role Of Strong And Weak Ties On Career Change Decisions, Christopher S. Lienemann

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Career development theories and business management/human resources explanations for career change and employee turnover suggest that there are many potential influences on career change including a lack of congruence between an individual’s changing needs and their environment, the discovery of new career options previously ignored or overlooked, ineffective or harmful management practices, and organizational or life changes outside of the individual’s control. However, we do not have a comprehensive sociological understanding of how workers leverage and are influenced by their social networks when changing careers. Working from Granovetter’s theory that “weak” and “strong” network ties provide access to job leads …

Centering Students Of The Global Majority In United States Community College Critical Internationalization Programming: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Jennifer T. Westmoreland Jan 2024

Centering Students Of The Global Majority In United States Community College Critical Internationalization Programming: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Jennifer T. Westmoreland

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In 2020, students categorized as Black, Hispanic, Asian, and two or more races comprised over 50% of community college enrollment nationwide. However, current internationalization models in community colleges are rarely intentionally designed for and with students of the global majority. This study addresses a gap in the research by exploring the priorities of students of the global majority regarding content and engagement in community college global education programming. I interviewed six students representing a variety of racial/ethnic backgrounds, ages, and genders at a community college in Minnesota. Using van Manen’s lifeworld existentials, I analyzed and interpreted the data in the …

"Flowers In The Concrete”: Anti-Violence Nonprofit Leadership And Primary Prevention In Minnesota, Kim Lohse Jan 2024

"Flowers In The Concrete”: Anti-Violence Nonprofit Leadership And Primary Prevention In Minnesota, Kim Lohse

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The grassroots origins of the American anti-violence movement have evolved to rely on institutions that perpetuate cycles of violence including law enforcement, criminal justice, and government funding programs. These systems do not meet the needs of most survivors and, in many cases, increase the physical violence and emotional abuse they experience. While the anti-violence movement has had success in shifting perceptions of gender-based violence, systemic responses have proven inadequate to prevent cases of sexual assault and intimate partner violence. This thesis study will analyze various forms of anti-violence response in the state of Minnesota using qualitative interviews with anti-violence advocates …

A Growing Dome In The Clouds Of Everest: An Applied Anthropology Project In The High Himalaya, Gary Mark Lesley

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Presented is a novel approach to addressing food insecurity within a remote indigenous community situated in the high Himalaya of Nepal. The village faces challenges in accessing fresh, affordable produce, particularly during harsh winter seasons. Through the integration of indigenous knowledge and technological advancements, this APP details a strategy to augment local agriculture, drawing on applied anthropological methodologies. The genesis of this project stems from the creative leadership of the school principal and his vision for …

Guided Self Placement As A Stand-Alone Assessment, Judy Endres Jan 2024

Guided Self Placement As A Stand-Alone Assessment, Judy Endres

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Two-year colleges provide access and opportunity for students with various academic backgrounds to pursue a post-secondary education. While two-year colleges take pride in admitting any student with a high school diploma or equivalent, in recent years colleges have been under scrutiny for low completion and graduation rates. Particular attention focuses on students who are required to enroll in non-credit developmental courses for academic preparation in math and English prior to college level courses. To respond to concerns, colleges are redesigning developmental courses to increase student success. Another area of focus is the process for determining, or assessing, a student’s preparedness …
