The Investigation Of The Digital Divide: Government Literacy With African American Seniors, Jenettie Pirtle May 2026

The Investigation Of The Digital Divide: Government Literacy With African American Seniors, Jenettie Pirtle

Theses

My thesis, The Great Divide: An Investigation of Digital Literacy with African American Seniors, explores how race, age, and income shape access to technology and digital learning. Many African American seniors continue to face barriers to digital literacy due to limited resources, lack of exposure, and social inequalities. Using a qualitative approach, I conducted a focus group to hear directly from seniors about their experiences with technology, what challenges they face, how they feel about using it, and what support they need. Guided by Critical Race Theory and the concept of digital inequality, my analysis highlights the gap between access …

Art, Play, And Neuroplasticity: Advancing Dementia Care Through Art-Enriched Environments, Piper Hutson, James Hutson Jun 2025

Art, Play, And Neuroplasticity: Advancing Dementia Care Through Art-Enriched Environments, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

Dementia represents a global public health crisis, characterized not only by progressive memory loss but by a pervasive decline in cognitive flexibility, social functioning, and overall quality of life. Traditional therapeutic modalities, often limited to pharmacological management and cognitive training, have yielded only modest gains in symptom mitigation and patient well-being. Recent advances in neuroscience have illuminated the brain‘s capacity for neuroplasticity—its inherent ability to adapt, reorganize, and form new neural connections even in advanced age and the presence of neurodegenerative conditions. This emerging understanding invites a critical re-evaluation of dementia care strategies, highlighting the potential of non-pharmacological interventions to …

Expanding Sensory Kit Utilization Across Age And Contexts: Bridging Gaps For Inclusive Accessibility, Piper Hutson, James Hutson Dec 2024

Expanding Sensory Kit Utilization Across Age And Contexts: Bridging Gaps For Inclusive Accessibility, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

Sensory kits, initially developed for neurodivergent children, have seen growing integration into various educational, cultural, and therapeutic contexts. However, their broader applicability, particularly for adults and diverse populations, remains underexplored. This study examines existing practices in the design and use of sensory kits within academic, museum, and inclusion frameworks, highlighting their role in promoting focus, reducing anxiety, and supporting self-regulation. Using case studies from institutions such as the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, alongside a review of evidence-based interventions like weighted items and fidget tools, the research underscores the potential of these tools in diverse environments. The methodology …

Evaluating The Impact Of Cyber Seniors On The Mental Health And Connection Of College Students, Paige Julius

2024 Student Academic Showcase

Mental health issues on college campuses have reached an all-time high. Intergenerational programs that facilitate interactions between aging adults and college students are a promising strategy to improve mental health of college students. This project evaluates the impact of an intergenerational technology program called Cyber Seniors at Lindenwood University. The mixed method evaluation analyzes changes in overall perceived wellness and social connectedness of college students. To date many studies have looked at the impact of intergenerational programs on seniors, but few have focused on college students. Results show a statistically significant improvement in overall perceived wellness and the subscale of …

Preserving Linguistic Diversity In The Digital Age: A Scalable Model For Cultural Heritage Continuity, James Hutson, Pace Ellsworth, Matt Ellsworth Mar 2024

Preserving Linguistic Diversity In The Digital Age: A Scalable Model For Cultural Heritage Continuity, James Hutson, Pace Ellsworth, Matt Ellsworth

Faculty Scholarship

In the face of the rapid erosion of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage globally, the urgency for effective, wide-ranging preservation methods has never been greater. Traditional approaches in cultural preservation often focus narrowly on specific niches, overlooking the broader cultural tapestry, particularly the preservation of everyday cultural elements. This article addresses this critical gap by advocating for a comprehensive, scalable model for cultural preservation that leverages machine learning and big data analytics. This model aims to document and archive a diverse range of cultural artifacts, encompassing both extraordinary and mundane aspects of heritage. A central issue highlighted in the …

Lgd-4033 And Mk-677 Use Impacts Body Composition, Circulating Biomarkers, And Skeletal Muscle Androgenic Hormone And Receptor Content: A Case Report, Thomas D. Cardaci, Steven B. Machek, Dylan T. Wilburn, Jeffrey L. Heileson, Dillon R. Harris, Harry P. Cintineo, Darryn S. Willoughby

Faculty Scholarship

LGD-4033, a selective androgen receptor modulator, and MK-677, a growth hormone secretagogue, are becoming increasingly used amongst recreationally-active demographics. However, limited data exist describing their effects on health- and androgen-related biomarkers. The purpose of this case study is to report changes in body composition and biomarkers during and after continued co-administration of LGD-4033 and MK-677. We additionally aimed to examine muscular strength and intramuscular androgen-associated biomarkers relative to non-users. A 25-year-old male ingested LGD-4033 [10 mg] and MK-677 [15 mg] daily for 5 weeks. Blood and body composition metrics were obtained pre-, on-, and post-cycle. One repetition maximum (1RM) leg …

Gerontoludic Character Design: Creating Engaging Player Characters For Older Adults, Robin Noelle Koman May 2022

Gerontoludic Character Design: Creating Engaging Player Characters For Older Adults, Robin Noelle Koman

Theses

In this thesis, findings of research in gerontoludic character design, in other words the design of game player characters focused upon the needs, wants, and expectations of older adults, are delivered. To support these findings, there is a review of qualitative and quantitative literature on ageism, including the impact of aging stereotypes and assumptions upon technology driven industries such as the game industry. This exploration of the roots of ageism includes an examination of how ageism affects the frequency and nature of older adult characters, both playable and non-playable, found in video games. Part of the justification of this topic …

Exploring The Visual Arts With Rog: A Four-Part Series, Roger Heuberger Dec 2020

Exploring The Visual Arts With Rog: A Four-Part Series, Roger Heuberger

Theses

This project report addresses the research which led to the choice of content, formatting of curriculum, delivery system, and video conference management. The combined art appreciation and art history classes are innovative as they are built around high-interest key art events or movements instead of linear chronologies or systematic reviews of art elements. The research for this Thesis II project extended beyond art historical materials. The literature review and analysis additionally explored educational theories which could be adapted for use with the target audiences of 65+ aged seniors and lifelong learners. The original project submitted in mid-2019 was for in-class …

Lifelong Learning: The Key To Successful Aging, Tina Grosso Mar 2018

Lifelong Learning: The Key To Successful Aging, Tina Grosso

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

The silver tsunami brings new challenges to societies across the globe. At the forefront of this greying population trend is the desire for older adults to lead active and independent lives well into their later-years. As a result, lifelong learning initiatives that promote physical, psychological, and socioeconomic well-being are imperative. In particular, health education programs that assist with the detection, management, and prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes, are at the forefront of public health discussions. Knowing when to retire, where to access long-term care services, and what to do if there is an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis are just …

Beyond Obligation: Social Workers As Lifelong Learners, Carla Mueller, M. Denise King Mar 2018

Beyond Obligation: Social Workers As Lifelong Learners, Carla Mueller, M. Denise King

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

The profession of Social Work is dynamic. “Social workers practice in rapidly changing and complex environments where they encounter challenges that include increasing evidence-based practice requirements, a shifting information landscape, and diminishing workplace resources” (Nissen, Pendell, Jivanjee, & Goodluck, 2014). Lifelong learning has long been recognized in the field; indeed, it is incorporated into our professional responsibilities. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics states, “social workers should critically examine and keep current with emerging knowledge relevant to social work” (2017, Section 4.01). Social workers are also held accountable by state licensure to participate in ongoing professional …

Music’S Effects On Memory, Madyson Carroll Jun 2017

Music’S Effects On Memory, Madyson Carroll

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Many people believe that studying while background music is present enhances their eligibility to remember the criteria better. The effects of music on memory was examined through the completion of a memory card game. Young adults were asked to take part in this task twice. One game included background music, while the other did not include background music. Throughout each game, the amount of time it took the participant to complete the game in seconds, was measured. I hypothesized that the inclusion of background music will have a positive influence on one’s performance when completing a memory card game. However, …
