Entregado A Los Estudiantes: Adolescent Pedagogy As Seen Through The Theological Lens Of Latino Spirituality, Christian Arellano
Entregado A Los Estudiantes: Adolescent Pedagogy As Seen Through The Theological Lens Of Latino Spirituality, Christian Arellano
Th.D. Dissertations
The Catholic secondary educational system has not considered a new challenge in implementing cultural pedagogy as its primary form of transmitting dogmatic truth to its students despite the widespread presence of modern immigrants who are not concentrated in specific parishes. Taking into consideration that Hispanic/Latinos comprise a large share of the Catholic population in America, this issue is important. The traditional forms of teaching religion in the secondary school system primarily emphasize a Euro-American style that neglects the spiritual and religious dynamics of Hispanic/Latinos. Since divine revelation does not favor a particular cultural perspective or lifestyle, all cultural pathways that …

"I'S Not So Wicked As I Use To Was:" The Interplay Of Race And Dignity In Nineteenth-Century American Drama And Blackface Minstrelsy, Sam Volosky
HON499 projects
Blackface was an extremely popular and pervasive performance type unique to nineteenth century American performance. For years, the black characters of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and The Octoroon were played by white actors in blackface makeup whereas mixed-raced characters were presented as white. These two plays, each having played a role in affecting public opinion toward slavery, do not stand out from the tradition of blackface minstrelsy and, subsequently, take part in subjugating black entertainers in the realm of theatre as well as society. The playwrights borrowed conventions of contemporary theatrical performance in order to cater to the tastes of their …

The selected films include Dracula (1931), The Return of Dracula (1958), Blacula (1972), Dracula (1979), and Dracula Untold (2014). Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a classic work of American literature that has been adapted into many different forms since its original publication in 1868. This essay analyzes the effects of adapting a novel, or written medium, to a visual medium such as a film or stage production. Particularly, it looks at Alcott’s Little Women in relation to Allan Knee’s 2005 Broadway musical adaptation of the story. This article begins with a discussion about the challenges that come with adapting a written medium to a visual medium, and then uses Little Women as a case study, examining the …

What Does White Supremacy Look Like Today?, Jacob Bennett Mfa

The introductory slides provide a framing definition: “White supremacy is believing not only that white people are superior based on their skin color, but that they have the right to rule over other people.” Additional concepts that help frame the presentation include “imperialist white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy,” “racialization,” and “colonial ideology.” The presentation then provides an overview of U.S. legal and penal statutes, starting in 18th century Massachusetts, moving through 18th and 19th century federal “fugitive slave” laws, the end of Reconstruction and the beginning of Jim Crow, the 20th century militarization of police force, and the discrepancy between crack and …
