Digital Technology Affordances Reshaping Entrepreneurship Development Process: A Systematic Review, Emmanuel Okoro Ajah May 2024

Digital Technology Affordances Reshaping Entrepreneurship Development Process: A Systematic Review, Emmanuel Okoro Ajah

The African Journal of Information Systems

Digital technology has brought about the emergence of digital entrepreneurship, which has significantly disrupted existing products and services and the way that they are marketed. This new wave of entrepreneurship has piqued the interest of scholars from various disciplines, including Information Systems. However, in the literature, there are insufficient theoretical explanations of digital technology's role in the processes involved in digital entrepreneurship development. To address this, a systematic review was conducted to comprehensively explore digital technology affordances in digital entrepreneurship development. Such affordances are the factors that cause the digitalization of the events that characterize digital entrepreneurship development. The outcome …

The African Journal of Information Systems

The management of COVID-19 pandemic has revealed inefficiencies in coordinating global response, particularly in African countries. Therefore, creating an urgent need to examine the literature on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in crisis management to appreciate its contextual role. Employing a systematic review, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), this paper critically assessed the extent of the use of ICT in crisis management in Africa’s response to COVID-19 to reconstruct its resilience against future crises. Findings indicate that while countries with limited ICT infrastructure faced considerable challenges in utilizing ICT solutions in COVID-19 management, countries …

Lemons To Lemonade: Educational Modifications During The Covid-19 Pandemic And Their Utility Moving Forward, Ellis S. Logan, Brandon Atkins, Anne M. Price May 2024

Lemons To Lemonade: Educational Modifications During The Covid-19 Pandemic And Their Utility Moving Forward, Ellis S. Logan, Brandon Atkins, Anne M. Price

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated changes across social institutions, including education. This case study outlines specific innovations using five cases of pedagogical developments made by social science faculty members at a public university, and their utility for undergraduate students in a post-pandemic world. These innovations relate specifically to office hour scheduling, class assignment reminders, building informal class support groups, experiential learning, and virtual paper submission and evaluation. For each case, we outline the implementation procedure, evaluate its effectiveness, and discuss the benefits. We argue that these methods, forged during “challenging times”, will help improve students’ experiences and success during their time …

The Nonperson Treatment In Higher Education: The Case Of Contingent Faculty, Roscoe Scarborough May 2024

The Nonperson Treatment In Higher Education: The Case Of Contingent Faculty, Roscoe Scarborough

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

This article applies Erving Goffman’s conceptual theory of the “nonperson treatment” to the empirical reality of contingent faculty in higher education. According to Goffman, the nonperson treatment is a technique of diminishing the social status of a person, often foregoing all acknowledgement of a person’s humanity beyond transactional civilities. Contingent faculty in higher education experience job insecurity, limited opportunities for advancement, low wages, insufficient benefits, a corporate style of management, curtailed academic freedom, alienation from faculty governance, ineligibility for professional development, limited schedule autonomy, invisibility on campus, and limited access to campus resources. The inequities and exclusionary practices faced by …

Singing The Blues: Sociology/Sociologists In Challenging Times, Karen Young Ph.D., Rodger A. Bates

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Numerous challenges confront higher education in post-pandemic America. Demographics, inflation, political conflict and technology have altered the environment of higher education. In particular, sociology has struggled to maintain enrollment, program appeal and relevance. In Georgia, sociology is at a crossroads for students, faculty and the future of the discipline.

The Sociological Imagination In Challenging Times, Nathan S. Palmer May 2024

The Sociological Imagination In Challenging Times, Nathan S. Palmer

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

This critical essay argues the events of the last few years have made sociology more relevant to students’ lives and increased their need for and the utility of a well-developed sociological imagination. To meet the opportunities created by this moment, sociology educators need well-designed and highly effective pedagogical interventions that develop their students' sociological imaginations. Unfortunately, much of the available scholarship on developing students' sociological imaginations lacks the conceptual clarity and empirical rigor needed to discern which pedagogical interventions are most effective. After a detailed review of the scholarly problems surrounding the sociological imagination, recommendations for expanding the field are …

Use Of Newly Acquired Materials: An Analysis Of Print And E-Book Acquisitions, Rickey Best

The Southeastern Librarian

The Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Library examined its current acquisitions circulation rate over a period of five years (from 2017-2021) to determine whether materials being added met student and faculty needs as demonstrated by circulation patterns, and if there was a difference in circulation patterns between acquired print and e-books that might help the library determine where to better focus its resources: print or electronic.

The Post-Pandemic Job Market For Academic Librarians In The Southeast United States, Louise Lowe, J B. Hill, Jenna Eastwood Hill, Claresta Icasia

The Southeastern Librarian

This study examines the state of the post-pandemic academic library job market in the Southeastern region of the United States. This analysis of academic librarian job advertisements collected from 2022 and 2023 reveals that while some new jobs have emerged there is a continued demand for traditional roles, prior work experience and the ALA-accredited master’s degree. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are prominent in job advertisements despite some regional political opposition. Remote work options are limited, signaling a nuanced approach to work modality post-pandemic.

Keeping The Light On: Academic Librarians And Burnout, Jason D. Phillips, Laura Pitts, Jessica Riedmueller, Joanna Warren May 2024

Keeping The Light On: Academic Librarians And Burnout, Jason D. Phillips, Laura Pitts, Jessica Riedmueller, Joanna Warren

The Southeastern Librarian

There is substantial research about sources of burnout among academic librarians; however, very little addresses the impact of the local environment. Responding to regional and institutional shifts while still trying to uphold the values of librarianship such as providing confidential and free access to information can quickly lead to mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion, classic symptoms of burnout. A panel discussion was presented at the Arkansas Library Association (ArLA) / Southeast Library Association (SELA) Joint Conference, on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Academic librarians from different Southern states discussed their local environments, their libraries’ responses to recent events, and their strategies …

Library Anxiety: How Elements Of Morrison’S Fourth Place And The Fast Casual Approach From The Restaurant Industry May Make The Academic Library Space More Inviting, Tara J. Kunesh

Georgia Library Quarterly

The concept of library anxiety was introduced by Constance Mellon in 1986. Since then, studies have attempted to shed light upon this phenomenon to mitigate the feelings of apprehension students may feel when utilizing the academic library space or when seeking the professional help of librarians. This literature review examines the literature and, specifically, discusses whether it is possible to configure the physical library space in a more inviting way. It highlights sociology of space theories as well as concepts behind the fast casual movement employed by the restaurant industry as possible routes to improvement.
