India has undergone tremendous change in its economy and polity since its economic liberalization starting in the early 1990s. Globalization and liberalization have, in addition to coinciding with a dramatically increased GDP, increased the presence of global entities and the number of foreign nationals in India, and accelerated the spread of social media. The period has also been marked by a significant increase in xenophobic violence against women, religious minorities and LGBTQ individuals. The rapid development and release of emerging technologies have made their adoption challenging. Most often there are failing issues in organizational adoption of emerging technologies. It is yet unclear which component(s) of organization play the prominent role(s) in organizational readiness to adopt emerging technologies. Using a mixed method, this study conducted an online survey of 83 South African organizations for server virtualization adoption. Modernization as development in the Post-War era was a compelling model for even critical scholars, as post-colonial societies sought growth and development as independent nations. This essay explores lessons from the Tanzanian case, in order to determine whether globalization is a similarly seductive, yet insufficient model for development in the current period. Looking at the intensive changes in Tanzania’s largely rural economy, from colonialism, to the ‘self-reliance’ of pre-villagization, and then Ujamaa or villagization, development and demographic trends and migration effects are analyzed. The Nano Controversy: Peasant Identities, The Land Question And Neoliberal Industrialization In Marxist West Bengal, India, Sarasij Majumder

As the peasant-Nano opposition suggests, urban activists and intellectuals dubbed the movement against the land acquisition and building of the factory as a complete rejection of globalization and industrialization. This paper contests these public images of the protests against land acquisition by drawing attention to certain paradoxes that the Singur case presents (which I discuss below). I address these paradoxes through an ethnography done in villages where the controversy and the protests took place for two years (2006-2008). My ethnography suggests a perspective on protests against land acquisition in India, which is different from the usual narrative of capitalist industrialization …

While universities can act as important mediators amidst the highly disruptive and contentious change processes of globalization, very few institutions are intentionally fulfilling such a mission. Moreover, there are significant ethnocentric and ideological barriers to overcome before intercultural understanding and cooperation may occur. Nonetheless, universities in the global age are increasingly called upon to help prepare students to better perceive, understand, interpret, translate, and negotiate complex interdependent global contexts. This paper describes global civil society and examines the potential for what we call movement diplomats to facilitate a citizens' movement to action beyond today's fragmented dialogue at the World Social Forum. The paper concludes that while the emergence of a Global Citizens Movement (GCM) may not seem probable, we argue it is possible given the historically unique factors pushing us into a global age. We discuss further some of the necessary missing ingredients for the emergence of a GCM and point to future avenues for exploration. Our work is animated by the prospect of a GCM and we build …
