Gen Z And Gen Alpha: Designing Theology Courses For A Digital And Ai Generation, Maurice Emelu
Gen Z And Gen Alpha: Designing Theology Courses For A Digital And Ai Generation, Maurice Emelu
2025 Faculty Bibliography
This exploratory article examines strategies for teaching theology to Generations Z and Alpha, emphasizing their digital-native traits and unique learning preferences. It argues that theology education thrives when students engage with reflective, creative, and relevant content. Drawing from experiences at a Jesuit college and education research, it introduces the OAEPA strategy—Observation, Analysis, Evaluation, Production, and Assessment—as a framework for designing theology courses. The approach encourages active participation, critical thinking, creativity, and personal relevance, aligning with Jesuit traditions of reflection and discovery. The article uses examples such as a theme in sacramental theology to show how theological ideas can be meaningful …
Meta Social Technology And A Ritual Of Power, Maurice Emelu
Meta Social Technology And A Ritual Of Power, Maurice Emelu
2024 Faculty Bibliography
This article critically analyzes Meta, a social technology platform, focusing on its thematic characteristics as a ritual platform. Drawing on Carey’s ritual model and incorporating Couldry’s media ritual framework, the study examines Meta’s distinct features and their implications for ritual practices regarding religion. By examining Meta’s ritual forms and their role in naturalizing sacred rituals, the analysis sheds light on the power dynamics and implications of Meta’s ritualization process within the broader context of its social technology affordances. It also provides some recommendations for a scholarly appreciation of Meta’s ritual relationship with religious communities.

Using Parasite’S Scholar’S Stone (水石) In A Critical Race Decoding Of Racism And Class, James Bretzke S.J.
2023 Faculty Bibliography
The ‘Scholar’s Stone’ (Suseok수석 水石) which is used as an extensive and pervasive motif in Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 film reveals a good deal of what the concept of ‘intersectionality’ in Critical Race Theory (CRT) seeks to uncover. The Scholar’s Stone functions also as a prism to see refracted through the movie the various hues and colors of Confucian culture still present in contemporary Korea, and these in turn can be further analyzed using aspects of CRT. To ground this thesis, I employ the established cultural anthropology concepts of ‘fundamental values and root paradigms’ along with ‘excess of meaning’ and ‘fusion …
Did Jewish Women Circumcise Male Infants In Antiquity? A Reassessment Of The Evidence, Thomas R. Blanton Iv
Did Jewish Women Circumcise Male Infants In Antiquity? A Reassessment Of The Evidence, Thomas R. Blanton Iv
2023 Faculty Bibliography
Two diametrically opposed assumptions have influenced interpretations of circumcision rituals in ancient Judaism: either women performed the operation on their infant sons because children at birth and during infancy remained under the purview of the mother; or, conversely, men—specifically a ritual agent known as the mohel—performed circumcisions, because only they were typically granted authority to carry out the ritual. This study reassesses the pertinent texts, including Exodus 4 and passages from the books of Maccabees and the Babylonian Talmud (b. Šabb. 134a; b. Yebam. 64b; b. ʿAbod. Zar. 27a), to determine whether women in ancient Judaism may have circumcised their …
Tibetan Buddhism And The Tibetan Autonomous Region, Sean Butler
Tibetan Buddhism And The Tibetan Autonomous Region, Sean Butler
Masters Essays
This paper explores the uncertain future of Tibetan Buddhism within the TAR based on historical and contemporary indicators. This paper demonstrates that Tibet and China are at a critical juncture that, if mishandled, will result in disastrous effects for Tibetan Buddhism. This paper is not seeking to predict the future of Tibetan-Chinese relations but uses available evidence to gauge the most likely outcome for Tibetan Buddhism inside the TAR. In doing so, it becomes evident that in the next decade, Tibetan Buddhism within the TAR will likely experience heightened oppression, a crackdown on any dissent towards the CCP, and a …

The Acclimation Of Refugees To A Healthy And Prosperous Life In America, Ray Flannery
Senior Honors Projects
Refugees comprise a very niche subset of the U.S. population who often require immense guidance and assistance throughout their transition from life in refugee camps abroad to life in the United States of America. Whether their needs are primarily physical, emotional, financial, educational, or some combination of these, Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services in Cleveland, Ohio helps bridge existing gaps and aids newcomers in meeting these needs. The population served by this office includes refugees, asylees, Special Immigrant Visa holders, and immigrants of all ages, socioeconomic statuses, and medical needs in the greater Cleveland area. As the largest of …
Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey
Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey
2022 Faculty Bibliography
Reporting on responses from a survey of disaffected Mormons who utilize internet resources to manage feelings of distance from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this article explores the production of religious ambivalence online, arguing that ambivalence is not a default position for those too passive or afraid to leave, nor is it a failure of decisiveness or commitment. Rather, it is a produced religious mode that depends on robust socialization mechanisms to result in a strong sense of personal and collective identity. The online context enables, and indeed requires, an operationalization of religious ambivalence as both a …

A Relational Account Of Structure And Agency Via ‘Lived Ancient Religion’ And The ‘Processing Approach’, With A Case Study Of Circumcision In Ancient Judaism*, Thomas R. Blanton Iv
2022 Faculty Bibliography
Addressing studies of the concepts of structure and agency, in 2008 sociologist François Dépelteau called for a ‘relational approach’ that compared the ‘trans-actions’ of actors, but notably left open the question of how such a study should be conducted. The present article attempts to operationalise Dépelteau’s call, albeit in a manner tailored specifically to meet the needs of researchers in the area of ‘lived ancient religion’. The study of ‘trans-action’ is operationalised here by employing key terms drawn from Staf Hellemans’s ‘processing approach’ to the study of religion, in which agents ‘process’ their environments through selection, modification, assembly, performance, integration, …

The Epistemic Parity Of Religious Apologetic And Religion Debunking Responses To The Cognitive Science Of Religion, Walter Scott Stepanenko
The Epistemic Parity Of Religious Apologetic And Religion Debunking Responses To The Cognitive Science Of Religion, Walter Scott Stepanenko
2021 Faculty Bibliography
Recent work in the cognitive science of religion has challenged some of the explanatory assumptions of previous research in the field. Nonetheless, some of the practitioners of the new cognitive science of religion theorize in the same skeptical spirit as their predecessors and either imply or explicitly claim that their projects undermine the warrant of religious beliefs. In this article, I argue that these theories do no additional argumentative work when compared to previous attempts to debunk religious belief and that these recent debunking efforts are very much motivated by methodological commitments that are shared with canonical research. I contend …

Mary In Islam, Zeki Saritoprak
Mary In Islam, Zeki Saritoprak
2019 Faculty Bibliography
In the Qur’an, Mary has a unique place. As the only woman mentioned by name, the mother of Jesus, and a pious servant of God, she has inspired Muslim men and women since the beginning of Islam. In this chapter, there will first be a short overview of Mary’s place in the Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet, that is, Hadith. Following this, the importance of Mary in Islamic theology and spirituality generally as well as Mary’s historical place within Islam will be outlined. The views of important Muslim mystics, theologians, and various other scholars will be examined. There …
