Not Just Monetary: Arts And Humanities Scholars’ Perspectives On The Costs Of Open Access Publishing, Lindsey Skaggs, Rachel Scott, Colby Cilento

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Bibliometric and survey-based studies have documented different open access (OA) publishing practices among scholars across academic disciplines. This article reports on interviews conducted with arts and humanities scholars from the United States and explores how OA intersects with their research and publication practices. Beyond the considerable financial costs of OA publishing, findings demonstrate that arts and humanities scholars contend with opportunity, reputational, equity, and time costs as they consider and engage with OA publishing. The authors discuss the implications of these costs for librarians who facilitate the dissemination, discovery, and preservation of arts and humanities scholarship.

A Mixed-Methods Study Of Teacher Collaboration In A Steam Professional Development Program, Katherine B. King, Justina R. Jackson, Talia C. Kessler, Meltem Alemdar

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Teacher collaboration can be a powerful but challenging practice for K-12 educators. This is particularly true in the context of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) education, in which disciplines are integrated through innovative, student-centered teaching strategies. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach was employed to understand the impacts of a 5-year STEAM professional development program on K-12 teachers’ collaboration efforts. Using quantitative and qualitative methods and social network analysis (SNA), the study explored the nature of STEAM collaboration and identified aspects that supported and hindered successful collaboration. In Virtuous Bankers: A Day in the Life of the Eighteenth-Century Bank of England, Anne Murphy performs an exemplary feat of historical reconstruction. While most economic histories focus on the high-altitude movements of capital or the grand political maneuvers of central banks, Murphy descends into the dust and ink of Threadneedle Street. By framing her study as a single, composite day in the life, she transforms a dry institutional history into a sensory, professionally guided experience of the 1780s.

The Thing about Stuff is an exhibition of editioned prints and book forms that pertain to personal and societal contradictions under capitalism. I use a combination of collage, design, print, traditional research and writing to form a better understanding of my place in capitalism by redefining my participation in it. Historical and contemporary research in combination with self-reflection and artmaking assists in my exploration of consumerism through the lens of human-object relationships. This body of work translates my own material desire for an audience through intentional composition, limited color pallets and intentional display. Impact Of A Novel Hybrid Computer-Based Simulation Adult Dysphagia Training On The Confidence And Clinical Knowledge Of Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students, Jaime Bauer Malandraki, Jennine Bryan, Dawn Wetzel, Allison Schaser, Bruce A. Craig, Georgia A. Malandraki

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The purpose of this project was to examine the impact of a novel hybrid computer-based dysphagia simulation training on student confidence and clinical decision-making in the area of adult dysphagia. We developed a pilot SBT database, including computer-based simulations utilizing real-life actors who simulated standardized adult patients with dysphagia. Students completed a comprehensive bedside swallowing evaluation and analysis of a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) as part of the training. We evaluated confidence and clinical decision-making through the following outcome measures: student self-rated confidence levels using a self-efficacy survey and agreement levels with our gold standard rater on clinical evaluation forms. …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This paper reflects on my experiential learning journey using the Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle to explore pragmatic therapy for young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). As a participant observer in the Level Up program, I engaged in twice-weekly social communication sessions, gaining insights into interprofessional practice, communication interventions, and effective counseling techniques. Through this hands-on experience, I recognized a gap in the curriculum related to employability skills for individuals with ASD and IDD. This led me to develop a lesson plan focused on job-related social skills, addressing the need for practical, vocational-focused interventions. …
