What Do Renters Want: Renter Priorities And Neighborhood Organizations’ Ability To Address Those Issues, Jordan Backstrom

The purpose of this capstone paper is to engage the rental population in two Minneapolis neighborhoods and get renter resident feedback on issues of local concern, and potential programs that a neighborhood organization could offer to ameliorate those issues. The study consisted of surveys collected from tenants and property owners in two neighborhoods in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The results of these surveys will help to guide the development of future neighborhood organization programming targeted towards the benefit of the rental population.

Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) often find it difficult or impossible to verbally communicate due to mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy tubes or increased fatigue and delirium. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can provide ICU patients with a way to communicate during their ICU admittance. However, few hospitals currently have a systematic service delivery model in place for providing AAC tools and supports to ICU patients. This resource manual provides an outline for creating and implementing an AAC service delivery model along with AAC materials and resources appropriate for an ICU. In the last several years, the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has seen significant technological advances that are both innovative and exciting. One of the main advances in technology comes in AAC applications on mainstream tablet devices like iPads. Tablet devices with AAC applications are being explored as an alternative to dedicated speech generating devices due to cost and convenience. But, before choosing between a mainstream tablet AAC device and a dedicated AAC device, there are several foundational elements of AAC to be understood. Input: An Academic–Practice Partnership To An Underserved Rural Community, Judy Neubrander, Susan Franzen, Rebecca Mathis

The INPUT project is a model partnership that changed the way health care was offered to the underserved in rural Western North Carolina. Grant funding provided a full‐time Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) to a free clinic and created clinical placements for FNP students. Students had opportunities to learn about unique aspects of care for vulnerable, underserved populations to encourage them to consider working in rural communities. The clinic saw an increase in patient visits and offered more continuity in follow‐up care. This academic–practice partnership represents a successful example of how working together can benefit the collaborators and community.

Examining The Learning Of Students Participating In An Interactive Simulated Patient Experience, Mary Smyers

Simulated patients are becoming increasingly used in the educational program of future speech-language pathologists. The use of standardized patients provides the opportunity to teach students clinical skills in a controlled environment (Bradley, 2006; Zraick, 2012). Simucase, a speech-language pathology software program, allows clinicians to practice their assessment and treatment skills on virtual patients and is a valid method when teaching clinical skills. Thus, this project examined five undergraduate senior clinicians’ performance and reflection about the Simucase program and their own clinical knowledge. The advent of electronic health records (EHRs) has led to significant changes in the role of those who managing patient health information, Health Information Management (HIM) professionals. A curriculum was created for individuals with developmental disabilities who no longer qualify for skilled speech-language services at the Ecklemann-Taylor Speech & Hearing Clinic. The first portion of the paper includes the terms of eligibility within the clinic, reasons for dismissal, and the population that can potentially benefit from this curriculum. The second part of the paper includes an extensive literature review and the empirical base of the components for the curriculum which provide extra support. Finally, the guide to the curriculum itself is attached.

This paper is a review of attention, memory, word finding, and executive function to support individuals with deficits in these areas seen in a rehabilitative speech-language therapy setting. Each chapter contains a definition of the domain and describes the subdomains included. The chapters also include the neurology associated with the domain and common disorders that include deficits in the areas of attention, memory, word finding, and executive functioning. At the end of each chapter, recommended treatment principles are provided to guide therapy with each domain. During spring and fall seasons, Neotropical migratory passerines travel nocturnally across the Western Hemisphere between their wintering and breeding grounds, often encountering man-made threats. One hazard that has gained considerable publicity in recent decades is the communication tower. While there have been many tower kill studies recorded, there has been no attempt at predicting the risk of towers based on their different attributes (e.g., height, type of light, landscape placement) spatially on a regional scale. The objectives of this study were to gain an understanding of how practicing teachers believe they are prepared to meaningfully and critically integrate technology into their classroom practices; and to understand how practicing teachers recruited those beliefs into their teaching practices. This included gaining an understanding of what they believed led to their engagement in the critical dimensions of technology use in their teaching practices. This mixed-methods study contained two phases. In Phase 1, 58 graduate students in a College of Education completed a newly developed Critical Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (C-TPACK) survey containing likert-scale and open-ended questions. Many stories told about the Great War are usually about the exploits of men. But what about the women who fought for justice and freedom? This article features three women who were once students of Illinois State Normal University: Ellen C. Babbit, Elizabeth Taylor Cleveland, and Ada Adcock. With original letters, photographs, and surveys sent by university librarian Angeline Vernon Milner, the war stories of three extraordinary women can are told to new generations.

Illinois State University’s Milner Library is one of the few libraries in the nation possessing original posters produced during the First World War. It owes this distinction to the University’s first librarian, Angeline (known as Ange.) Vernon Milner. Milner preserved these posters after the war’s end, despite their original intent for a short-term, wartime-only purpose. As ephemera they were produced and distributed for public display and then meant to be discarded following the war. Milner preserved the posters recognizing their strong visual impact and value in illustrating a campus during wartime. Today these posters constitute the Answering the Call World …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Series Of Vanadium ( Iv ) Complexes With The Kläui Ligand, Xiao Wu

Cyclopentadienyltris (dibutyl phosphito-P) cobaltate, {(C5H5)Co[(OR)2PO]3}– (R=Bu), is a tripodal ligand and also called Kläui ligand (R=Bu). The synthesis and characterization of several vanadium(III) and vanadium(IV) complexes containing Kläui ligand (R=Bu) as the catalytic models to catalyst the oxidation reaction of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) to 3,5-di-tert-butyl-o-benzoquinone (3,5-DTBQ) are detailed here. Chapter II details the synthesis of the supersandwiches and Kläui ligand (R=Bu). Chapter III details the synthesis of vanadium monomeric complexes containing Kläui ligand (R=Bu). Chapter IV details the vanadium dimeric bridging complexes synthesized by different vanadium monomers from Chapter III. Chapter V details the catalytic activities of these vanadium complexes.

A Pokébalancing Act: The Management Of Japanese Cultural “Odor ” In Pokémon, Nicholas Raes

In this project, I analyzed two seasons of the Pokémon anime to discover patterns of cultural “odor” management employed by the show’s producers and editors. In the first season of Pokémon, the producers of the anime included many symbolic representations of Japanese cultural artifacts within the visual features of the show. However, between the Japanese and US versions of the season, most instances of Japanese linguistic text were either “scrubbed” from scenes entirely or replaced with English text. These techniques struck a careful balance between including and excluding Japanese specificity within the first season, subtly expressing to non-Japanese audiences the …

Presenters will discuss their investigation into using Wikipedia to identify author characteristics in order to enhance bibliographic records using terminology from the new controlled vocabulary, Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms (LCDGT). Focusing on African American writers, the session will discuss workflows, ethical issues, and opportunity cost in assigning LCDGT terms using citations showing self-identification to satisfy Library of Congress standards.

This thesis examines the conditions of wage-earning women in Peoria, Illinois, during the first two decades of the twentieth century. I present the plight of wage-earning women as well as the well-intended efforts of both local and national crusaders who helped the working women of Peoria survive and in some cases overcome hardships.

In summer 2017, I assumed responsibility for my library's institutional repository (IR). Content from the College of Fine Arts (Schools of Music, Art, and Theatre and Dance) had, to that point, been less present in the IR than content from other colleges. With goals of increasing visibility for CFA activities and scholarship and providing a stable digital home for its content, I worked with stakeholders in the library and in CFA to develop new IR collections of programs, newsletters, and student and faculty work.
