It is unclear how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake and which sociodemographic groups may have been most impacted. We aimed to assess differences in HPV vaccine uptake (initiation and completion) before and during the pandemic in the United States. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the 2019 to 2020 National Immunization Surveys - Teen (NIS-Teen), comparing vaccine initiation and completion rates in 2019 vs. 2020, based on confirmed reports by a healthcare provider. Weighted logistic regression analysis estimated odds of vaccine initiation and completion for both adolescent and parental characteristics. There were 18,788 adolescents …

HPV vaccination is most effective if received before initiation of sexual activity. Previous studies suggested that young adult women who were not sexually active were not interested in receiving the vaccine because they did not think it was necessary. Whether this misperception is still prevalent today-and also shared by men-is unknown. This study examined whether sexual activity was associated with HPV vaccine uptake (initiation and completion) among university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and May 2021 among students (n = 951) at a public Midwestern University. Sexual activity was categorized as "never" or "ever" had oral and/or …

The Adoption Of The Hpv Vaccine School-Entry Requirement In Puerto Rico: How Practical Lessons Can Inform Future Vaccine Policies, C. Vázquez-Otero, Elizabeth Lockhart

Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research Articles

Vaccine requirements are policy-level strategies used to improve population health outcomes; however, discourse politicization of vaccines may hinder adoption and implementation. An example of the complexities related to adoption of vaccine policies in the United States (US) is the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine school-entry requirement. In 2018, Puerto Rico's (PR) Department of Health adopted this policy. This study assessed stakeholders' recommendations for adoption of the HPV vaccine school-entry requirement that could inform future vaccine policies. Stakeholders (e.g., researchers, members of medical and non-profit organizations) were interviewed from May to August 2018. Participants (n = 20) discussed recommendations for public health …

Children's sensitivity to regularities within the linguistic stream, such as the likelihood that syllables co-occur, is foundational to speech segmentation and language acquisition. Yet, little is known about the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying speech segmentation in typical development and in neurodevelopmental disorders that impact language acquisition such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we investigate the neural signals of statistical learning in 15 human participants (children ages 8-12) with a clinical diagnosis of ASD and 14 age-matched and gender-matched typically developing peers. We tracked the evoked neural responses to syllable sequences in a naturalistic statistical learning corpus using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in …

RNA-binding proteins (RBP) regulate numerous aspects of co- and post-transcriptional gene expression in cancer cells. Here, we demonstrate that RBP, fragile X-related protein 1 (FXR1), plays an essential role in cellular senescence by utilizing mRNA turnover pathway. We report that overexpressed FXR1 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma targets (G-quadruplex (G4) RNA structure within) both mRNA encoding p21 (Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor 1A (CDKN1A, Cip1) and the non-coding RNA Telomerase RNA Component (TERC), and regulates their turnover to avoid senescence. Silencing of FXR1 in cancer cells triggers the activation of Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitors, p53, increases DNA damage, and ultimately, cellular …

Public Health Care Delivery In Five U.S. Municipalities: Lessons And Implications, David G. Whiteis, J. Warren Salmon

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Increasing pressures on private and public hospitals have necessitated a reassessment of urban health care delivery. Patients left unserved by stressed private hospitals have placed a greater burden on public institutions, which themselves are often old, underfunded, and in danger of closure. As policy analysts consider remedies, primary care in community-based settings has reemerged as an important component of planning. We present results of a comparative analysis of five public health care delivery systems (Boston, Dallas, Denver, Milwaukee, and Seattle), reflecting their economic, political, and cultural dynamics. Although significant differences in the relative centralization of care and reliance on community-based …

Cervicofacial Actinomycosis In Children, Michael E. Friduss, Dennis R. Maceri Mar 1990

Cervicofacial Actinomycosis In Children, Michael E. Friduss, Dennis R. Maceri

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Actinomycotic infections, once common in humans and cattle, are now rare causes of disease in man. This general group of organisms belongs taxonomically between the true bacteria and the fungi; however, the organisms behave clinically like true anaerobes. The organism, although phagocytized by the host cells, is not killed. Therefore, d is defined as a facultative intracellular parasite of the host. The protean manifestations of actinomycotic infections often mimic infectious processes, such as osteomyelitis or granulomatous disease, as well as neoplasia. It is therefore important for the surgeon to include actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses in children …

Diagnostic And Therapeutic Potential Of New Radiopharmaceutical Agents In Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma, Luigi Troncone, Vittoria Rufini, Giovina De Rosa, Amerigo Testa

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Recently developed radiopharmaceuticals have been proposed for imaging medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) with some having therapeutic potential. This study compares the imaging results obtained with radioiodinated meta-iodo-benzylguanidine (MIBG), 99mTc (V) DMSA, and 131I F(ab')2 anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (anti-CEA) in a group of MTC patients. In 23 patients 131I MIBG imaging showed a high specificity (no false-positive results) but a less satisfactory sensitivity (50%). In 12 patients 99mTc (V) DMSA revealed a better sensitivity (77%) but a lower specificity (three false-positive results). Positive results were obtained in two of three patients studied with 131I F(ab')2 anti-CEA. These data suggest that the highly …
