Crisis Events In K-12 Online Learning: Educator Perceptions And Preparedness, Dawn Tysinger, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Journal
Although K–12 online learning institutions may be protected from certain school safety concerns (i.e., physical violence on a student or a teacher), physical distance does not offer protection from all potential crises that may impact individual students or the online school environment. The current survey research explored educators’ perceptions of and preparedness for the following crisis frequencies in the online learning environment: suspected child/adolescent neglect, suspected child/adolescent abuse, suspected student suicidal ideation, suspected student homicidal ideation, unexpected death of a student, unexpected death of a teacher, emotional aftermath of natural disasters, and emotional aftermath of terrorist incidents. Across the sample, …

The Every Student Succeeds Act (Essa): What It Means For Educators Of Students At Risk, Cordelia D. Zinskie, Dan W. Rea
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Journal
This editorial perspective examines some ways that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which becomes operational in the 2017–2018 school year, may enhance the capacity of educators to help students and schools at risk of underperforming. It also addresses some of the challenges that educators will face under ESSA in ensuring success for all students. We highlight aspects of ESSA that may be of most interest to our readers including the broadened definition of academic success, expansion of subgroups for data reporting, emphasis on evidence-based research and practice, focus on continuous improvement, and need for increased educator understanding of research …

Preparing Latino Students For Life After High School: The Important Role Of School Counselors And School Psychologists, Desiree Vega, Erik M. Hines, Renae D. Mayes, Paul C. Harris
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Journal
Latinos represent a significant percentage of the U.S. population; yet, they continue to experience substantial educational challenges in society. The purpose of this paper is to explore the barriers Latino students face in pursuit of educational opportunity and the important role school counselors and school psychologists can play in preparing them for life after high school, whether it be participation in the workforce or attendance at a postsecondary institution. Policy recommendations are provided for educators and policymakers at the secondary and postsecondary levels. Moreover, practice recommendations are offered for school counselors and school psychologists at the secondary level.
Empowering Impoverished Youth Through Autonomous Community Outreach Strategies To Improve Learning And Academic Success, Michael S. Mucedola
Empowering Impoverished Youth Through Autonomous Community Outreach Strategies To Improve Learning And Academic Success, Michael S. Mucedola
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Journal
Millions of students in the U.S. continue to live in varying degrees of poverty and the impact it has on learning and academic achievement cannot be understated. These students have specific learning needs as well as emotional and social challenges, and these must be accounted for by educators. Bridging the school system with the surrounding community through outreach strategies for students living in poverty has the potential to not only improve academic success, but the community in which they reside. The aim of this article was to examine the literature to ascertain specific needs of students living in poverty, identify …

Possibilities And Challenges Of Teaching Integrated Math And Social Studies For Social Justice: Two Teacher Educators' Collaborative Self-Study, Paula P. Guerra, Sohyun An
Georgia Educational Researcher
In this paper, we—one mathematics teacher educator and one social studies teacher educator—describe a project where we collaborated to model teaching integrated mathematics and social studies for social justice in our methods courses. We encountered varied challenges in our efforts to prepare teacher candidates for social-justice-oriented lessons. These challenges included teacher candidates’ perception of authority/credibility of their professors who were foreign females from the “Third World”, teacher candidates’ deficit views on minoritized students, and the limited time and resources for teacher collaboration in teacher education. Despite these challenges, we believe this kind of project is necessary to move forward in …
Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez
Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez
Georgia Educational Researcher
Writing in mathematics provides students with the opportunity to think critically about and reflect on their experiences while solving problems. While many studies have documented the benefit of writing in math, it is not clear which instructional methods should be used to help students learn how to use writing to support learning. In this study, we take a constructivist approach to building students understanding of effective writing by developing a series of active, student-centered lessons. The findings indicate that students wrote more effectively after the instructional sequence; in particular, they were better able to explain their reasoning and to make …

Training Implementation Of Behavior Intervention Plans Using Behavioral Skills Training, Jennifer L. Alexander, Katie A. Smith
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Most trainings conducted in today in schools are ineffective at improving acquisition of new skills. Poor training can have a collateral effects on student outcomes, including worsening problem behavior. Behavioral skills training (BST) is an evidence-based training package that can be used to train staff and parents to implement interventions to fidelity with individuals with disabilities. This presentation is designed for practitioners who are responsible for training others who implement behavior intervention plans. Through this presentation you will learn why BST is an effective strategy, how to implement the steps of BST, and how to evaluate your training.

Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins
Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Among other challenges, homeless children often struggle with internalizing and externalizing behavior problems that impair functioning and well-being (Bassuk, et al., 1997). Given the instability of service continuity often present in the lives of homeless families and their children, it is strikingly common for child mental and behavioral disorders to be caught at a later developmental stage among this group compared to both housed and other low-income peers (Grant, et al., 2007). Emergency shelters represent an untapped setting in which to deploy universal, evidence-based screeners for problem behaviors among this population. We implemented universal screening interventions across three shelters serving …

Successful Rti/Mtss From Tier 1 Through 4 Requires Everyone., Leonora Clarkson
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
RTI/MTSS will be successful if data review of academics and behavior begins with Tier 1 and moves through tier 4. Tier 1 is the most important to evaluate, and sometimes it is the last to be discussed when looking at RTI/MTSS. This session will start with Tier 1 information focusing on universal screening, classroom management, rigor of academics, PBIS, and motivating students. When tier 1 is implemented with success, implementing tiers 2 through 4 become a natural process. Schools need to talk with parents to ensure they understand family history and what has been tried at home. Parents can share …
