In May, Gardner-Webb University students and leaders will travel to Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) to assist in the medical clinics run by the Kudvumisa Foundation (https://www.kudvumisafoundation.org/). Impoverished families in this African country have little to no access to medical care and one of the world’s highest HIV/Aids prevalence rates. Over the last 15 years, with the help of generous donors and volunteers, the non-profit organization has built two clinics and maintains a mobile outreach van. The Foundation’s missionaries constantly strive to increase the number of families they serve.

For their final elective clinical practice experience in the Master of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies Program at Gardner-Webb University, three May 2023 graduates decided to test their skills in another country. Myah Harrison of Belmont, N.C., April Evans of Spartanburg, S.C., and Sarah Hiscocks of Bullock, N.C., flew nearly 18 hours and paid out-of-pocket to work in Kenya.

Human trafficking (HT) is a public health crisis and the need for education is dire. Healthcare providers lack confidence in victim recognition and aid provision all while encountering victims in their practice. The project leader aimed to empower healthcare providers in recognizing signs of HT and making appropriate referrals. Ten community volunteers, including registered nurses, who assist with a mobile medical unit and spiritual 12-step program, participated in a Human Trafficking 101 training. Two members of the Gardner-Webb University community recently returned from a medical mission trip to Barahona in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Sydney Brown, dean of the Gail Bolt Price School of Graduate Studies and professor of education, and Brook Wright, a second-year student in the Master of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner program, traveled with Dream Ministries, an organization that has been working in the Dominican for over 20 years. Through the years, multiple GWU nursing faculty and students have been a part of this mission experience.

Downs recently began the semester by presiding over the Fall Academic Convocation and giving a special address to students as part of the Dimensions series. During both programs, Downs focused on Gardner-Webb’s mission. “I want to underscore one important message as we launch this new year,” Downs stated at the Fall Convocation. “And the message is this—we are a private university with a very public mission, and it is incumbent upon all of us to live up to that public mission in some way.”

A 12-member team from Gardner-Webb University served on a medical mission trip to Thailand from May 13-23. Led by Dr. Nicole Waters, interim associate provost of the College of Health Sciences, associate professor and dean of the Hunt School of Nursing, and Dr. Candice Rome, associate professor of nursing, the group included six nursing majors, two exercise science majors and two biology majors. Working with missionaries, team members provided basic health care in Thailand to approximately 300 refugees of all ages, from multiple countries.

Research conducted by Gardner-Webb University senior Savannah Hollifield will have an immediate impact on the fitness world. Her findings will be added to the data used by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to establish a normative base for its cycle ergometer protocol and push-up test. The exercise science major from Forest City, N.C., was one of 13 students who received a grant from the Undergraduate Research Scholars program for the summer 2018 term.

A physician known as a quiet, humble servant in the Boiling Springs and Gardner-Webb community passed away Dec. 9, 2018. Dr. H. Gene Washburn, a 1952 GWU alumnus and former Board of Trustee chair, is remembered for his devotion to his family and faith, his dedication as a family practice physician, and his support for his alma mater. His family connection to Gardner-Webb dated back to the very birth of the institution.

Military wives often wonder what they will do while their husband is deployed. The answer for Hannah Currin Keller, a 2012 alumna of Gardner-Webb University, was to follow God’s direction. Hannah is volunteering in West Africa for nine months, while her husband, Jake, a 2013 GWU alumnus, spends the next year serving in Iraq with the 878th National Guard Engineering Company based out of Kings Mountain, N.C.

As she wondered what to do, the instructor came to a section in the syllabus that described how the Noel Center provides assistance to students with disabilities. “I had a hearing deficit due to Meniere’s disease and I wear hearing aids, but I didn’t see myself as having a disability,” White explained.

The objective of this project was to study the spiritual care of missionaries within the ministry context of Make Way Partners (MWP). The ministry context of MWP is to prevent and combat human trafficking. The context of this project was in the country of Sudan, in and near Darfur.

The 1924 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Double Springs Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by R. L. Lemons. The Committee on Church Finance recommends creating a budget system for church member contributions. Wallace Grove Church was admitted to the Association. The Committee on Education recommends providing financial support for rebuilding Meredith College. The Boiling Springs High School Annual Report indicated that the Memorial Building construction is nearly complete.
