Isaac Tuttle, ’20, of Lenoir, N.C., enhanced his college experience by participating in the Gardner-Webb University Honors Program. He earned his degrees in history, and philosophy and theology. Recently, because of the Coronavirus pandemic, Tuttle and other Honors students presented their research in a Zoom teleconference. In the fall, Tuttle plans to attend the University of Alabama’s graduate school in history.

Gardner-Webb University senior Grace Love is completing a sixth-month internship with the U.S. Embassy in Mali without leaving her home in Shelby, N.C. Through the Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS) internship program coordinated by the U.S. Department of State, she is working with an assistant general service officer. Receiving instructions by email and phone, Love has updated a welcome book for families of embassy personnel and reformatted another book for the Marines and USAID (United States Agency for International Development) personnel who are currently in Mali.

Since 1990, Stan Law has worked in various roles with the Y accepting jobs with increasing responsibilities. As North Korea tests missiles and increases threats against the United States, an alumnus of Gardner-Webb University is working to keep America safe. Capt. Jason Brewer, ’95, is the operations officer in charge of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade in Colorado Springs, Colo. For his critical role in protecting the country, Brewer was recently named the 2017 United States National Guard Missile Defender of the Year.

Students in a Gardner-Webb University social sciences course on “The Community” are taking their studies beyond the classroom. Taught by GWU Associate Professor Dr. Dianne Sykes, the class is raising money for a Puerto Rican couple who were affected by Hurricane Maria in September. “They are the grandparents of Marcesa Harper, a 2011 GWU alumna,” Sykes noted. “César and Maria Acosta need a generator and a solar panel or two. They have health concerns and live on a fixed income. We hope that what we can gather will be a blessing to this couple.”

At the beginning of May, the U.S. Department of State issued a Europe Travel Alert to warn Americans about the probability of a terror attack in France, Russia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Analyzing intelligence information to keep Americans safe is the job of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) in Washington, D.C. Students from Gardner-Webb and six other colleges recently met with NCTC analysts in GWU’s Tucker Center to participate in an exercise where they learned firsthand how possible terrorist threats are discovered.

Although Lindsay Frazier ’16 had dreamed of becoming a lawyer when she was younger, she began her studies at Gardner-Webb University as a secondary history education major. In her junior year, she took a class on the Civil Rights Movement with Dr. Joseph Moore. Researching and writing class assignments gave her confidence in her abilities, and she realized law school was a definite possibility.

A Ph.D. student in American history, Cates was awarded full financial funding to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. “My current studies are constantly aided by mental and written notes taken from meaningful conversations in the Broad River Coffee Shop, Dover Library, or in course lectures,” Cates shared.
