Camden, a four-legged agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) recently demonstrated his skills in fire investigation for Gardner-Webb University students. An official ignitable liquid detection canine, he’s trained to sniff out miniscule amounts of accelerant within a large area or pile of debris. Hosted by the Department of Natural Sciences, Camden was accompanied by his partner, Union County Fire Marshal Kevin Rigoli, and ATF Senior Investigator Darren Solomon.

For her Undergraduate Research Scholar Project, Gardner-Webb University student Tania Brown, of Gastonia, N.C., studied an idea with a practical application. A biology major with a concentration in biomedical sciences, Brown tested the efficiency of using watermelon and cantaloupe peels to remove Bromothymol Blue from water. Bromothymol Blue is a dye used as an indicator in determining pH. It is yellow in acidic solutions, blue in basic solutions and green in neutral solutions, but is harmful to the respiratory tract and digestive system if swallowed.

Gardner-Webb alumnus, Jacob Walley, was recently named the 2020 Adam Ritchie Outstanding Graduate Student in chemistry at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville. Given in memory of Ritchie (UVA Ph.D., 1968), this award provides financial assistance to an outstanding graduate student. Walley received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from GWU in 2017 and is working on his Doctor of Philosophy in inorganic chemistry from UVA.

Research by a faculty and staff member in the Gardner-Webb University Department of Natural Sciences could improve how arson investigators do their jobs. The scientific, peer-reviewed paper by Venita Totten, professor of chemistry, and Jacob Willis, GWU chemistry lab and undergraduate research coordinator, will be published in the prestigious Elsevier journal Forensic Science International in July.

For her Undergraduate Research Project, Cailen Blaire, of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, discovered a new method to synthesize vanillin, the compound that gives vanilla its characteristic taste and scent. She was one of 15 GWU students who received a grant from the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program. She worked 40 hours a week for five weeks on her project, which she will present in a professional forum.

Sulforaphane, a chemical compound found in broccoli, is known to have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. As an Undergraduate Research Scholar at Gardner-Webb University, Yuri Kurerov, of St. Petersburg, Russia, developed a method to separate and characterize the substance from broccoli seeds. One of 13 GWU students to receive a grant for focused research, Kurerov worked on his project during both 2018 summer terms.

Kristy Young Johnson (’92) took a course in her first semester at Gardner-Webb that prevented her from making the wrong decision about her future. “I hadn’t really considered a career in science before I got to GWU,” Johnson shared. “I was enrolled in biology with Dr. Tom Jones. His class was a wonderful introduction, touching on so many different aspects of biology that I finished the semester wanting to know more. Every science class I took just added to my curiosity.”

Jacob Walley, a Gardner-Webb senior chemistry major from Stanley, N.C., had a unique opportunity recently to conduct research on the largest marine oil spill in history. Deepwater Horizon, an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded on April 20, 2010, and scientists are still investigating the effects of the spill and cleanup efforts. Deepwater Horizon, a film about the explosion, opened in theaters on Sept. 30.

Wendy Harmon grew up with the mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams of western North Carolina at her back door. Some of her fondest memories are of outdoor exploratory excursions with her parents, Tommy and Darlene Harmon, where she literally first got her feet wet in ecology — the study of how organisms interact with their environments. Her mother was a Gardner-Webb graduate, but Harmon wanted to make her own decision about where to go to college.
