A Weeping Willow, An Original Script Enriching The Canon Of Deaf Plays, Tyler Furzland
A Weeping Willow, An Original Script Enriching The Canon Of Deaf Plays, Tyler Furzland
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This creative writing capstone project presents A Weeping Willow, an original play script that explores themes of resilience, mental health, human connections, and acceptance. A teenager wakes up with no memory of the past year. Through fragmented glimpses of the past and the future, he struggles to piece together what happened on the most important day of his life. The play does not revolve around a Deaf-thematic storyline, a story that highlights the auditory aspects of the Deaf experience. This play is influenced by a study of scripts written by Deaf playwrights or plays featuring Deaf characters. This research examines …
Programming Lights For Storytelling In Live Theatre: Technology, Collaboration, And Creativity, Jeremy Pitts
Programming Lights For Storytelling In Live Theatre: Technology, Collaboration, And Creativity, Jeremy Pitts
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This project explores how theatrical programming supports creative storytelling in live performance while collaborating closely with a professional Lighting Designer. My primary focus is acquiring theatrical programming skills, with the already foundational knowledge of theatrical electricity that supports theatre productions. Throughout the thesis process, I will learn to operate the ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls) Ion Classic console via structured tutorials and hands-on production experience. This practical approach will guide me comprehensively to understand the console's capabilities and real-world application. As part of my capstone project, I take on a role as a Co-Lighting Designer, co-designering with a professional lighting designer …

A Study Into The Psychology Of Emotions, Dark Comedy, And Theatre Of The Absurd: Ghosted An Original Script, Courtney Bronson
A Study Into The Psychology Of Emotions, Dark Comedy, And Theatre Of The Absurd: Ghosted An Original Script, Courtney Bronson
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Imagine a world without emotions. Ghosted is an eleven-part dark comedy script inspired by The Giver, Clue, Knives Out: Glass Onion, and Inside Out. The script explores the consequences of a dystopian, government-controlled society that has eradicated emotions in the name of order. The script blends dark comedy with elements of Theatre of the Absurd to highlight the farcical nature and danger of emotional suppression. Drawing on research in emotional psychology and emotional dysregulation, Ghosted presents emotions as incorporeal “Emotion Ghosts” that possess five volunteers and unleash unpredictable chaos. When one volunteer ends up dead, the remaining members begin to …

Barriers To Job Satisfaction Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Employees: Implications For Creating Deaf-Friendly Work Environments, Yunhe Bai
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Employment has long been a serious, far-reaching social problem within the deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) population. To unearth potential issues that contribute to such a problem, I conducted an honors capstone research on barriers to job satisfaction of D/HH employees, in which job satisfaction is a direct evaluation method of the relationship between nature of organizational structures and expectations that employees have of their work. Using a qualitative design with a review of existing literature, semi-structured interviews of 11 participants, a data transcription of American Sign Language interviews into English, and an interpretive analysis of interview discoveries, I …
Baggage: An Original Script And Production Furthering The Evolution Of Deaf Theatre, Nikolya Sereda
Baggage: An Original Script And Production Furthering The Evolution Of Deaf Theatre, Nikolya Sereda
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
As an homage to the musical RENT, I wrote and directed an original play entitled Baggage, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story, that was produced for the Gallaudet University Theatre Department’s spring 2019 production. Baggage follows three Deaf teenagers, Michaela, Gage, and Isabel, who connect through the music of RENT, as they find themselves entangled which ultimately ends in a falling out. The play also shows the experience of growing up in a hearing family as Michaela, Gage, and Isabel face frustration, underestimation, and neglect in their families. To spotlight the multifaceted ways of experiencing deafness, three songs from RENT were incorporated …

Staging Medea For D/Deaf Audiences In The 21st Century: Strategic Adaptation, Translation, And Production Approaches To Greek Theatre, Casey Johnson-Pasqua
Staging Medea For D/Deaf Audiences In The 21st Century: Strategic Adaptation, Translation, And Production Approaches To Greek Theatre, Casey Johnson-Pasqua
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Greek theatre and Deaf theatre are two forms of theatre that are on the opposite ends of a sensory spectrum. Greek theatre is auditory-based with an acoustically designed stage, seating twenty-five thousand. With two to three actors on the stage, movements are minimal, and masks are used to portray numerous characters. Visually based Deaf theatre uses movement through facial expression, body language, and American Sign Language. Because of this sharp contrast, there has been hesitancy in taking on a Greek play in Deaf theatre. Gallaudet University’s Theatre and Dance program has not produced an ancient Greek tragedy since Ethan Sinnott’s …

"She Stands For Freedom": A Thematic Unit Plan For 4th And 5th Graders, Jeremiah Sammons
"She Stands For Freedom": A Thematic Unit Plan For 4th And 5th Graders, Jeremiah Sammons
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
According to researchers such as Bell (1984) and Fisher (1991), few activities are more powerful for developing historical empathy than engaging students in role-play. This thematic unit plan for fourth and fifth grade children integrates the learning objectives and skills required by the Common Core standards. It consists of a two-act play, The Golden Door, and sample lesson plans that include assessments. Beginning with the Statue of Liberty, the original theatrical work will introduce numerous historical figures as well as interesting historical tidbits, and familiarize students with famous women (as opposed to men), while also allowing teachers an opportunity to …

Reader's Theater For Deaf Students: A Tool For Developing Literacy Skills, Caroline Suggs
Reader's Theater For Deaf Students: A Tool For Developing Literacy Skills, Caroline Suggs
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Reader's theater is a method used in classrooms to encourage the development of literacy skills. Research has shown that the use of reader's theater in a classroom is linked to increased fluency, increased comprehension of text, and positive attitudes towards reading. Because research also shows that Deaf people are often delayed regarding literacy in English, a unit employing this method serves to bridge the gap between expected and actual levels of English literacy among deaf students. Intended for use with Deaf middle school students who sign, this unit of reader's theater is a plausible option in a bilingual approach since …
