Group projects are frequently used in higher education courses to facilitate collaboration; however, group effectiveness can vary greatly, resulting in individual stress and poor academic performance. To alleviate this, some instructors utilize peer evaluation. While instructors are well intentioned these rubrics rarely, if ever, are grounded in the constructs of collaboration that they wish to foster. This research poster reports on an ongoing project to develop a self and peer evaluation grounded in psychological capital and emotional intelligence, the EQ-PSY Evaluation. These constructs were selected based on their dimensions for individual and social capacities to capture effective teamwork.

Implementation Of A Healthy Skin Committee And Education On The Number Of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Laura Viana

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Abstract

Over the years, hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) have emerged as a significant challenge in the healthcare industry. Despite significant advancements in healthcare, pressure injuries continue to be a persistent global healthcare issue, closely linked to the safety of patients, affecting patient outcomes, and increasing healthcare costs (Gaspar et al., 2019). HAPIs are associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. HAPIs are likely to experience longer hospital stays, increased risk of infections, higher treatment costs, and potentially more significant health complications. HAPIs commonly occur in the hospitalized patient and are costly and preventable. Given the implications of HAPIs, there is …

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Under Title IX and the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, universities were reminded of their obligation to educate, prevent, and respond to sexual assaults and other forms of gender-based violence. The current study used a survey packet including a Rape Myth Acceptance scale, questions about related education, and a scale rating participants’ level of confidence on seven vignettes. The sample indicated participants were more likely to recognize whether consent was given than they were to recognize whether the vignette met legal standards for sexual assault. The results can provide universities with information to better individualize their sexual assault prevention efforts.

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

In the last five years, researchers have seen a notable increase in difficulty of collecting valid and useful survey data. Respondents, likely attracted to the prospect of receiving prizes or other compensation after survey completion, submit survey responses that are irrelevant to the questions asked, relevant but unusable due to the respondent not identifying as a member of the target population, or comprised of nonsense (such as paragraphs of lorem ipsum text or copy-pasted from other sources). As a result of experiencing a high volume of invalid survey responses to a qualitative survey aiming to research identity narrative formation among …

Associations Between Cannabis, Psychosis, And Schizophrenia In Adolescents, Lauren Moment

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

The effects of cannabis use on the brain, mind, and body have been studied for decades. The developing brain, particularly the adolescent and young adult brain, undergoes critical development that makes it especially susceptible to the effects of cannabis use. Among the adverse effects of cannabis use in adolescence and young adulthood, psychosis and psychotic disorders (e.g., schizophrenia) have been examined. The association of cannabis use with schizophrenia was first elucidated in a Swedish study of army conscripts. Specifically, conscripts reported their cannabis use exposure and were followed longitudinally to assess the emergence of schizophrenia. The authors found that those …

Standardized Isn't Standardized: Eliminating The Act For Teacher Education Admission, Elodie Jones, Betsy Crawford, Chris Jochum

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

As nationwide teacher shortages continue to grow (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018; Garcia & Weiss, 2019; Sutcher et al., 2016), the standards for which a teaching candidate is admitted into teacher education programs have continued to remain steadfast in rigid assessment scores and vast amounts of “hoop-jumping” for potential teacher education candidates who otherwise meet all of the academic and nonacademic requirements, with the exception of standardized assessments, such as the SAT or ACT (Ingersoll, et al., 2014; Lankford et al., 2014). After potential candidates with high GPAs, satisfied criteria, and dreams of becoming a teacher were being rejected, in …

Assessment Climate Survey Of Faculty At Fort Hays State University, April Park

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Assessment is critical piece in higher education to monitor student learning and program outcomes to ensure institutional effectiveness (Suskie, 2009). Results from rigorous assessment across FHSU support commitment to student academic excellence and student success that align with University strategic plans. Despite the benefits, implementation of assessment has its challenges. Studies suggest institution wide assessment is most effective when assessment culture shows a balanced mix of bottom-up (e.g., through department and program level) and topdown (e.g., institutional expectations) elements (EAU, 2006; Skedsmo & Huber, 2019). FHSU has put much effort to develop a culture of assessment and has noticed a …

Disadvantaged Gifted Students: Latinos, John Carter Jr.

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

This Literature Review examines the underrepresentation of gifted minority students identified in the United States, particularly Latinos. Giftedness and Talent Programs have historically been predominantly white with a diminished minority representation in the case of Latino, Black, and American Indigenous peoples. Although it has been argued in the past, nature vs nurture is not representative of the literature today. The literature shows that underrepresentation is caused by non-inclusive testing and identification bias by teachers. This kind of teacher bias may be caused by overt or implicit prejudice and may affect student interactions and mental health even outside of the gifted …

As a state comprehensive university in a small, midwestern metropolitan area, “Students First” is more than a slogan. The preamble to our Faculty Constitution and our University’s mission statement both specify that students and their flourishing are the justification for our institution’s existence. We have learned, however, that a precondition to robust attention to students’ well-being is parallel attention to the well-being and development of our faculty. This article chronicles the principles and practices by which our shared leadership team responded to unique challenges presented by the COVID crisis and its ripple effects. A closing theme acknowledges that COVID revealed …
